O trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento de um movimento curricular surgido no Brasil, cujo objetivo era a elaboração de textos e materiais didáticos para o ensino de Ciências nas escolas de 1º e 2º graus. O estudo abrange o período de 1950 a 1980 e refere-se ás atividades desenvolvidos por três organizações: a Fundação Brasileira para o Desenvolvimento do Ensino de Ciências (FUNBEC), o Instituto Brasileiro de Educação, Ciências e Cultura (IBECC), e o Projeto Nacional para a Melhoria de Ensino de Ciências (PREMEN).

O estudo demonstra que em dezenove currículos adotados na escola secundária brasileira, no período 1838-1942, houve uma correlação negativa significativa entre a proporção de carga-horária designada que estudos de ciências e humanidades. Os resultados apoiam as observações encontradas na literatura, as quais sugerem que a importância atribuída a cada uma dessas áreas, nos currículos estudados, foi interdependente.
The study shows that in nineteen Brazilian secondary school curricula adopted during the years 1838-1942, there was a significant negative correlation between the proportion of hourly teaching loads assigned to science and humanities studies. O trabalho descreve um modelo de analise quantitativa que permita investigar a variabilidade na duração do período de vigência do currículo escolar. Apresenta dados de base que indicam a “Estabilidade Temporal” dos currículos da escola secundaria brasileira entre 1838 e 1971. Introduz os conceitos e os coeficientes de Tempo de Implementação Legislada, Tempo de Implementação Efetiva, e Tempo de Implementação Regularização.

Social theorists in earlier periods have looked at credentialing from the perspective of its service to the economic or social system as opposed to its “protection of the public interest.” Adam Smith regarded the long education and the performance tests that the guilds required as monopolistic constraints on production; Karl Marx saw the same guild system as controlled by the propertied classes and uselessly exclusionary; and Emile Durkheim, unlike both Smith and Marx, regarded the occupational group with its entrance requirements as central to the stability of modern society.
