Finest Science Not Always Found In The Fanciest American Universities, David E. Drew

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Recent controversies about federal science funds for university research have become highly visible-and acrimonious. Debate about who should get support and why, long the province of a carefully developed system of peer, or merit, review, have been the subject of special task-force reports, congressional hearings and cover stories.

What Energy? Whose Energy?, Sharon Lee Heikens

All Graduate Projects

With limited energy resources a global concern, American education has a responsibilitiy to present to the young people of America energy information which is as unbiased as possible. The curriculum developed in this project has been designed to engage eighth graders of the Kennewick school system in a variety of activities which, in addition to building on prior knowledge of energy, attempt to motivate students toward responsible attitudes and values in using energy resources.

Student Learning Objectives For A One Semester Junior High Aerospace Course, Jerry Wayne Salstrom Jan 1983

Student Learning Objectives For A One Semester Junior High Aerospace Course, Jerry Wayne Salstrom

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to write a list of instructional objectives for a one semester introductory aerospace course at the junior high level. The objectives would be classified by topic for the aerospace class or for interdisciplinary use by teachers in other subject areas. While not all-encompassing, the list would be broad enough to allow some selection by individual teachers in developing their own programs.

Pattern And Mathematics: Math Enrichment Activities For Gifted Fourth, Fifth And Sixth Grade Children, Janet K. Zuber Jan 1983

Pattern And Mathematics: Math Enrichment Activities For Gifted Fourth, Fifth And Sixth Grade Children, Janet K. Zuber

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project is to provide assistance to the elementary math teacher in meeting the needs of the student gifted in the area of math. A collection of activities is provided to use with gifted intermediate students and should serve as an example of the type of activities appropriate for the gifted student. These activities would be most appropriately used with gifted students in grades four through six. The activities would be of greatest benefit if students were grouped in a homogeneous manner with one teacher taking responsibility for their math needs, Homogeneous grouping would allow for faster-paced …

Strategies For Improving Student Abilities To Comprehend Science Textbook Material, Kathleen H. Coyne Jan 1982

Strategies For Improving Student Abilities To Comprehend Science Textbook Material, Kathleen H. Coyne

All Graduate Projects

Fifty-five supplementary lessons were developed to be used in conjunction with a science text entitled Introductory Physical Science (1976). The lessons consisted of the following comprehension strategies: (a) structured overviews, (b) cloze procedures, (c) locational skill strategies, (d) vocabulary reinforcement strategies, and (e) reading guides. The lessons were prepared to enrich and improve the reading and understanding of the science textbook.

Implentation Of A School-Based Science Programme : A Case Study, Adrianne Kinnear Jan 1981

Implentation Of A School-Based Science Programme : A Case Study, Adrianne Kinnear

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper tells the story of the first two years of a science programme which was planned and implemented by the staff of a local primary school. The programme formed the core of a submission for government funding as a school-based innovation. The study describes the degree to which the submission's aims were achieved and attempts to analyse the factors contributing to the project's outcomes.

A Study Of The Nsf College Science Improvement Program, David E. Drew

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The College Science Improvement Program was launched in 1966 and has as its stated goal "... to accelerate the development of the science capabilities of predominantly undergraduate institutions and to enhance their capacity for continuing self-renewal" (National Science Foundation, 1969, p. 90). Between the program's inception and the end of fiscal year 1969, COSIP made 105 grants representing a total amount of over $18,000,000 to such institutions

The Development And Implementation Of An Auto-Tutorial Approach To Trade Mathematics, Warren Dwight Monroe Jan 1971

The Development And Implementation Of An Auto-Tutorial Approach To Trade Mathematics, Warren Dwight Monroe

All Master's Theses

The problem of this thesis deals with the instruction of trade mathematics. The major problem involves teaching trade mathematics to a heterogeneous group of technical students. The final outcome must be students mathematically competent to function in their chosen technical area. The method of instruction must be flexible enough to allow for individual differences. The mode of instruction must be able to accept the student where he is mathematically and take him to where he needs to go. The procedure used to solve this thesis problem is the auto-tutorial method of instruction. The solution involved the development of performance objectives, …

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine: 1) the readability of an intermediate series of science textbooks, Concepts in Science, published by Harcourt, Brace and World; 2) if the text was readable for the students at University Place Elementary School near Tacoma, Washington; 3) whether the gradation or slope of difficulty rises progressively from the beginning of the book to the ending of the book.

On The Allocation Of Federal Funds For Science Education, David E. Drew Jan 1970

On The Allocation Of Federal Funds For Science Education, David E. Drew

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Massive Federal expenditures for science research and development have been commonplace since World War II and the spectacular technical success of the Manhattan project. Shortly after the war the case for continued government support of basic science research was made by Vannevar Bush (1945) and others; the major organization which grew out of this Federal concern was the National Science Foundation. Subsequently the late fifties (and the voyage of Sputnik) saw science education become a national priority. That period spawned a wide array of measures in support of science education, e.g., the National Defense Education Act.

The passage of time …

The Misuse Of Animals In The Science Classroom, Richard K. Morris

Education Collection

At The HSUS Conference held in Washington in 1961, Dr. James T. Mehorter of the University of Vermont declared " ... our historic failure in humane education revolves about two points: (a) a philosophy, and (b) a psychology." Seven years later, as moderator of a panel discussion on humane education, I pointed out that there was a need for research leading to a defensible philosophy of humane education and research into the psychological effects on young people of violence on television, gun clubs in the schools, and of elementary and secondary school experiments on living animals. This "historic failure" is …
