Valuing Science Content: Science Is A Basic Skill For Everyone, James Shymansky, D. Wayne Green

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

The intent of this yearbook is to provide a positive posture for nurturing desirable changes in the status of science teaching. It is written for elementary school teachers and all who are involved or concerned with curriculum and instruction in the elementary school. The yearbook provides the basis for continued professional growth of teachers by stressing ways to logically and realistically infuse science and science-related instructions into schools and to assure that science will remain valued as new patterns of schooling evolve. As a means of promoting science relevancy and literacy, interfaces between science teaching and other areas of human …

Integrating Selected Principles Of Evolution Into The High School Curriculum, Judy Kareen Lyons

Graduate Student Research Papers

The purposes of this paper will be (1) to present selected biological principles pertaining to evolution, (2) to indicate curricular areas in the high school into which general aspects of evolution might be integrated, and (3) to denote specific phases of biology especially suited for teaching particular principles.

Community And School Involvement In Model Rocketry Instruction Including Suggestions For Efficient Model Rocket Construction, Helen Joyce Frizzell Jan 1972

Community And School Involvement In Model Rocketry Instruction Including Suggestions For Efficient Model Rocket Construction, Helen Joyce Frizzell

All Master's Theses

This paper presents the pilot-study of conducting model rocketry classes for parents and youth leaders as well as students and teachers to broaden involvement in aerospace education. Ideas gleaned from questionnaires, surveys, observations, and the review of literature were used to compile A Handbook of Tins for the Efficient Construction and Use of Model Rockets.

A slide presentation illustrating school and community involvement in model rocketry was also developed.

Recommendations included more model rocketry classes involving students and adults be offered and suggested that an appropriate organization publish and distribute the handbook and slide presentation.

A Comparative Investigation Of Understanding Of Ecological Content Between Eighth And Tenth Grade Pupils, David Lee Herbenson Jul 1971

A Comparative Investigation Of Understanding Of Ecological Content Between Eighth And Tenth Grade Pupils, David Lee Herbenson

All Master's Theses

The study had two major purposes. One purpose was to determine if Covington Junior High School eighth grade pupils understood the basic ecological ideas and facts presented to them in a teacher-designed one semester course entitled Environmental Concepts Orientation (ECO). The second purpose was to find out the degree of competence attained by the eighth grade pupils as compared to tenth grade pupils taking a one year ecologically oriented course in the nationally developed Green Version BSCS biology series at Camas, Washington.

An Analysis Of Selected Science Curriculum Guides, Juanita S. Ellison

Graduate Student Research Papers

This study is an analysis of six science programs for the primary grades by examination of the guides. The guides have been studied; first, for rationale--the reason given for the guide; second, for the content--what is being taught and at what grade level; and third, for the processes used in teaching. The guides are: 1. Madison Public Schools, Guide to Teaching Science, 1960. 2. Richland Public Schools, Teaching Science in the Elementary, 1966. 3. Pomona Unified School, Primary Science Guide, 1962. 4. Seattle Public Schools, Science Source Book, Book I, II, and III, 1962-64. 5. American Association for Advancement of …

An Investigation Of The Need To Correlate Academic Subject Areas With Industrial Arts, Ernest James Boedcher Jun 1965

An Investigation Of The Need To Correlate Academic Subject Areas With Industrial Arts, Ernest James Boedcher

Graduate Student Research Papers

This study was initiated as a result of a need that became apparent in two industrial arts seminars at Central Washington State College. Studies reveal that industrial arts teachers use principles, laws, and applications of mathematics and science daily, but these are seldom recognized and made meaningful to the students. As a result of this study industrial arts teachers may see a way to use this material to initiate similar situations in their teaching.

How Teachers Of High School Biology May Introduce Heredity And Birds Through The Use Of Doves, Donald Hood Dickinson

Graduate Student Research Papers

It was the purpose of this study (1) to present a method of teaching principles of heredity at a level understandable to students of a high school biology class, (2) to present a list of resource materials for use in a heredity unit, and (3) to show how the use of live animals might intensify student interest in this subject as well as in other phases of bird life such as nest building, incubation of eggs, hatching of eggs, voice and communication, and effects of nutrition on chick development.

An Overview Of Mechanism And Function Of Respiration In The Human Organism, James Morley Freese Aug 1962

An Overview Of Mechanism And Function Of Respiration In The Human Organism, James Morley Freese

Graduate Student Research Papers

The purpose of this paper was to take a seemingly simple concept of zoology, reveal in some measure its complexity, and show how this concept is often inadequately expressed and taught.
