Report Of The Strategic Planning Team: Executive Summary, Stephanie Pace Marshall

Documents

On December 4, 1987, a representative group of faculty and all administrators convened for a day to reflect on our past, discuss our present, and begin to make plans for the future of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. At that time, we discussed the need to engage in a formal process by which we would define who we were, what we were about, what we valued, and how we would direct our resources, (both financial and human), to achieve the goals that were inherent in the establishment of this unique institution.

This brief, but nonetheless intense discussion, resulted in …

In February 1994, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) was featured in USA Weekend and on NBC-TV's Dateline in reports on gender equity in education. The reports centered on the work of David and Myra Sadker, professors of education at American University. The Sadkers' new book, Failing at Fairness: How America's Schools Cheat Girls, was published in February

The February 4-6 USA Weekend, the nationwide weekend newspaper insert, cited IMSA in a cover story by the Sadkers. Three IMSA students were pictured on the cover. The Dateline report by anchorwoman Jane Pauley aired February 8.

Both reports …

Annual Reports

It is our privilege to share with you the eighth annual report of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The 1993-94 year was a turning point for IMSA and our annual report helps to tell the story of our continued transformation from that of "school" to that of "educational laboratory/resource for the state of Illinois."

During 1993-94, the board of trustees officially approved a new strategic plan and mission statement declaring a bold commitment to the transformation of mathematics and science teaching and learning through connections. To answer that call, the Academy radically redesigned its internal organizational structure and as …

Biological Olympiads In The Ussr, Vyacheslav Dushenkov Jan 1993

Biological Olympiads In The Ussr, Vyacheslav Dushenkov

Publications and Research

Biological Olympiads are the sort of intellectual competition widely spread nowadays, especially among high school students. Olympiads, often an integral part of the curriculum, stimulate the pupils' interest in acquiring knowledge and help to evaluate the level of their knowledge. Biological Olympiads in this country differ greatly from the science Olympiad in the USA. First of all, they include only biological material and can be compared only with USA Science Olympiad events such as "A is for Anatomy," "Bio-Process Lab," "Designer Genes" or "Don't Bug Me." Secondly, it is a personal competition with no official teams. Current Olympiads start at …

2: "The Mapping Of Chromosome 16", Norman A. Doggett, Raymond L. Stallings, Carl E. Hildebrand, Robert K. Moyzis

Genomics: Past & Future

Human chromosome 16 is the main focus of the mapping efforts at Los Alamos. The large photomicrograph on these opening pages illustrates the starting point for those mapping efforts, the evaluation of our chromosome-16-specific library of cloned fragments. Among the 23 pairs of human chromosomes, one pair, chromosome 16, is identified by fluorescence in-situ hybridization. Thousands of yellow fluorescent probes derived from the clone library have hybridized to both copies of chromosome 16. The high density and uniform coverage of the fluorescent signals were a strong indication that we could use the library to construct a map of overlapping cloned …

Leon N. Lederman, Illinois' first science adviser, worries about "the glaze." It coats the eyes of politicians when scientific subjects come up. The glaze might not be so important if it weren't for the fact that crucial policy issues involving science and technology are everywhere: global climate change, solid waste disposal, high-speed rail transit and stimulation of the advanced technology industry — to name just a few.

1989-90 Annual Report, Illinois' Investment, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

In many ways, the 1989-90 school year at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy can best be described as a year of re-creation. Having successfully met the challenges of the start-up years (1986-1989), our fourth school year became a time for thoughtful reflection, refocus and renewal. Within the context of strategic planning, we began to examine our values and beliefs, to clarify our mission and aspirations, and to develop bold, innovative strategies for achieving our institutional objectives.

1986 Convocation Address, Leon Lederman

Documents

Fermiiab is full of scientists and engineers who work together with the common purpose of understanding nature, meeting difficult challenges and wisely spending a very large amount of public money. As Director of the Laboratory I sleep like a baby - I wake up every two hours and cry.

The dictionary says a convocation is an assembly of scholars, summoned together for some special purpose. The tradition no doubt got started in the great English universities - last week we read of the convocation at Harvard, celebrating the 350th anniversary of that great institution - and 350 is a nice …

Illinois Science Academy: A Proposal To The State Of Illinois, Corridor Partnership For Excellence In Education, Friends Of Fermilab

IMSA History

There is a widely recognized perception that the nation facing a crisis in fulfilling its needs for citizens trained in the fields of science, mathematics and technology. In particular, the State of Illinois has an obligation toward this national issue and to .its own need to develop these human resources that are so intimately coupled to economic leadership in a post-industrial society. This is a very broad challenge; here we propose to address only one important aspect: the nurturing of creative excellence in students of science and mathematics. We are concerned with the extraordinarily gifted person--the upper few tenths of …
