Governor James R. Thompson and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Dr. Leon M. Lederman were honored at the formal dedication of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy on December 14. During the ceremony the Academy was dedicated to the People of Illinois in their honor.

News Release, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory

Dr. Leon M. Lederman, Director of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois, has been named one of three recipients of the 1988 Nobel Prize for physics. Sharing the prize with Dr. Lederman are Dr. Melvin Schwartz and Dr. Jack Steinberger. The three have been cited for their discovery, in 1962, of a second neutrino, an elementary subatomic particle. Fermilab is operated by the Universities Research Association, Inc., under contract with the United States Department of Energy (DOE).

Our second academic year enabled the Academy to embark in new directions. At the conclusion of the 1988 spring legislative session, the Academy's budget review process was transferred from the Illinois State Board of Education to the Illinois Board of Higher Education. We are grateful to all who have helped shape the Academy into the unique institution that it is today. We extend special thanks to Superintendent of Education Dr. Ted Sanders and the staff at the State Board of Education for their leadership. The idea grew out of the experience of Saturday Morning Phy9ic3 at Fermilab where we recognized that the exceptionally bright high school student was not being challenged by the generally good schools in the affluent suburbs.

An important event was a design workshop held on December of 1983 in which all the educational constituencies were represented: high schools, experts in gifted education, seven Illinois universities, community colleges, industrial research scientists, Fermilab and Argonne.

The purpose of this workshop is to produce a curriculum for a new kind of "magnet" school, described in the enclosed proposal. The objectives of the Academy would be to accept gifted high school juniors and, in three years, provide students completely prepared to enter college as juniors.

It is proposed that the school be very strong in math-science, but it does not take too much thought to realize that it must be almost as strong in English, Social Studies and the Humanities. As a pilot project, an entrance class of 300 students per year with an average population of 800 students may represent a reasonable scale.
