A Holistic Approach To Developmental Mathematics, Leah M. Rineck Aug 2020

A Holistic Approach To Developmental Mathematics, Leah M. Rineck

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a holistic course that meets the needs of students referred to multiple developmental mathematics courses. The study aimed to determine if the holistic design contributed to an increase in conceptual understanding of fractions, integers, and their operations. Additionally, the study analyzed the pass rates from the course design and compared these pass rates to historic versions of the course and current gateway courses. Last, the student’s perceptions of the course were analyzed to determine their perceptions of the design features of the course. The study took place at a large midwestern urban …

An Evaluation Of A Redesigned Developmental Mathematics Course At A Hawaii Community College, Bebi Zamina Khan Davis Jan 2019

An Evaluation Of A Redesigned Developmental Mathematics Course At A Hawaii Community College, Bebi Zamina Khan Davis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Developmental mathematics is a problem for many college students due to high failure rate. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the redesigned course, Math 24. The evaluation examined success, retention, and persistence outcomes of the redesigned course compared to the previous developmental math course. The course's academic and environmental strengths and weaknesses were assessed from the students' and instructors' perspectives. The study utilized the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of Tinto's retention model, Astin's I-E-O model, and Wlodkowski's culturally responsive teaching. A mixed methods program evaluation was employed for the case study using an ex post …

A Phenomenological Study Of College Students In Developmental Mathematics Classes Experiences With Mathematics And Computer Anxiety, Dan Murphy Jun 2018

A Phenomenological Study Of College Students In Developmental Mathematics Classes Experiences With Mathematics And Computer Anxiety, Dan Murphy

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

No research has been conducted on college students in developmental mathematics classes struggling with both mathematics anxiety and computer anxiety in a qualitative manner. Prior studies have dealt with college students in developmental mathematics classes struggling with mathematics anxiety and college students in developmental mathematics classes struggling with computer anxiety. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of students taking developmental mathematics who self-report both mathematics anxiety and computer anxiety. The theory guiding this study was the social cognitive theory by Bandura (1986) as modeling is a key component in the learning of mathematics, especially …

The Mathematics Of Nutrition Science, Lana Zinger, Jonathan Cornick, Jennifer Maloy

Open Educational Resources

The Mathematics of Nutrition Science is a workbook designed to integrate and contextualize developmental mathematics into an introductory college level Nutrition class. Definitions and skills from Community College Level Elementary Algebra and Quantitative Literacy courses are explained through examples analyzing the nutritional content of different foods. The book contains exercises for students to practice these skills, and also to reflect on the concepts through short writing assignments aligned with developmental English. These materials could be used by Nutrition course instructor in many different ways, and are designed to be self-contained and require minimal mathematical instruction.

Developmental Students' Perceptions Of Unsuccessful And Successful Mathematics Learning, Laurel Howard Nov 2009

Developmental Students' Perceptions Of Unsuccessful And Successful Mathematics Learning, Laurel Howard

Laurel Howard

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe what experiences, attitudes, and learning strategies developmental mathematics students believed contributed to their failure to gain basic math skill proficiency in the past and what experiences, attitudes, and learning strategies these students now believed were most likely to enhance the successful learning of basic math skills. To gain an understanding of the lived experiences of successful developmental mathematics students who were previously unsuccessful, structured, open-ended interviews were conducted, classroom observations were made, and formative and summative assessments for the students were collected. Fourteen students from a western 4-year college were selected …
