Several reforms that affected the different levels of instruction were implemented in Brazil during the decade of 1850. With respect to secondary education, the regulations proposed in Decree no. 1556 of February 17, 1855, by minister Couto Ferraz, significantly modified the program of studies of the College Pedro II, the model institution of the Empire, by dividing it into two cycles: the Studies of the First Class and the Studies of the Second Class. This study discusses changes in the curriculum, not only in its organization, but also in its composition and the emphasis given to the various disciplines in …
Estimational Abilities And Mathematics Achievement Of Seventh Graders, Mary Elizabeth Mendenhall
Estimational Abilities And Mathematics Achievement Of Seventh Graders, Mary Elizabeth Mendenhall
Theses and Dissertations
Computational estimation and mental computation are two of the most neglected areas of today's mathematical curriculum. Much has been written about these two concepts, but little instruction has been carried out in the classroom (Johnson, 1979; Reys, 1986). Freeman (cited in Reys & Bestgen, 1981) states that less than 3% of textbooks had estimation lessons. Reys (1987) found that only 4% of lessons in all fourth-grade textbooks of the early 1980's deal with estimation. Also, Buchanan (1978, p. 2) observes that: "Instruction in. estimation is not something that has been tried and failed; it has not been tried on any …

This article describes the curricular movement to develop primary and secondary school science texts and materials in …
The Cousteau Log Centering On Marine Animals For Elementary School Children, Annie Suffron
The Cousteau Log Centering On Marine Animals For Elementary School Children, Annie Suffron
All Graduate Projects
"Centering on Marine Animals for Elementary School Children" was a multi-curricular learning center design in four parts. It consisted of an introduction on Bubbles the Whale, including a picture, a puppet, a song, a Sea Script, and task cards. Following the introduction were three units on Sea Monsters of the World, the Migration of the Grey Whale, and the Ecology of the Southern Sea Otter. Each unit contained a picture of the sea animal, a puppet, a song, a Sea Script, a Quiz, map(s), and task cards.
Transformational Geometry Unit, Elizabeth Ann O'Neill
Transformational Geometry Unit, Elizabeth Ann O'Neill
All Graduate Projects
The study included the development and writing of a unit on transformational geometry which involved a holistic approach including the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. This unit was taught to the eighth grade class in the Oakville School District in Oakville, Washington. The results showed support that the teaching of this unit was effective.
Computer Literacy In The Junior High School, John E. Odom
Computer Literacy In The Junior High School, John E. Odom
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
There must be some design to the computer related curriculum in the secondary school. The conference board of the Mathematical Sciences Committee on Computer education fettle base of such a curriculum should be a junior high school course in "computer literacy". These materials must be designed to provide enough information about the nature of a computer so that students can understand the roles which computers play in society. This thesis is designed to (1) Provide the student information on how a computer works, (2) present the student with a sampling of ways the computer is used in society, (3) introduce …
An Evaluation Of An Early Introduction Of Algebra I To Junior High School Students On An Extended Basis, Ralph H. Peterson
An Evaluation Of An Early Introduction Of Algebra I To Junior High School Students On An Extended Basis, Ralph H. Peterson
All Master's Theses
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the program of mathematics for eighth grade students that provides for an early introduction to Algebra I. The study will (1) gather evidence needed upon which to base a decision to continue the type of grouping described above, and (2) gather evidence to determine changes in the students' attitudes and interest concerning mathematics in general.
An Analysis Of Selected Science Curriculum Guides, Juanita S. Ellison
An Analysis Of Selected Science Curriculum Guides, Juanita S. Ellison
Graduate Student Research Papers
This study is an analysis of six science programs for the primary grades by examination of the guides. The guides have been studied; first, for rationale--the reason given for the guide; second, for the content--what is being taught and at what grade level; and third, for the processes used in teaching. The guides are: 1. Madison Public Schools, Guide to Teaching Science, 1960. 2. Richland Public Schools, Teaching Science in the Elementary, 1966. 3. Pomona Unified School, Primary Science Guide, 1962. 4. Seattle Public Schools, Science Source Book, Book I, II, and III, 1962-64. 5. American Association for Advancement of …

An Elementary Science Course Of Study Developed For Use In The Stockton Unified School District, David H. Smith
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Elementary science has made rapid strides in the last four or five years. In our elementary schools we have the laymen and scientists of tomorrow. The masses should have a speaking acquaintance with science and know the value to society through its modern inventions and discoveries. Knowledge of facts discovered by scientists give rise to conceptions that vitalize thinking in many fields and cause the redirection of human activities. Scientific conceptions such as time, space, change, variety, adaptation, and interrelationships have exerted profound influence upon thinking in wide areas of human affairs. These concepts can never be mastered, but they …
