Today's retail architecture is developed by creating experiences, sensory experience is one of its aspects. Design students are expected to understand the concept, so this study aims to explore the sensory experience of students in a special retail space, namely art fashion retail. This research uses the qualitative photo elicitation method, participants are brought into real retail space and follow-up interviews are accompanied by photos. The findings revealed that only a small of participants paid attention to both tangible and intangible elements. So, for further assessment, it is necessary to match knowledge between education and the real world.

Strengthening character education in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 is urgent to anticipate the dehumanization of students. This research using exploratory qualitative methods has found seven superior ethnic characteristics in Indonesia as the most dominant: independent, consistent, hardworking, honest, challenging, assertive, and happy to work together. This paper describes the framework for strengthening character education by integrating prominent ethnic characters in Indonesia with the characters that become learning outcomes in national compulsory courses and skills courses in the higher education curriculum. As a result, student achievement in character aspects asses in an integrated manner at the end of …

Learning independently can decrease for students during the Covid-19 pandemic if students experience saturation in learning so that they are lazy to do the tasks given. This research uses a qualitative approach with a type of case study. The research, placed in Banjar sari Surakarta, used respondents totaling 27 upper-class students from grades 4-6 and 5 interviews with teachers. Data were collected through interviews and direct observation with respondents. Overall, the level of saturation and independence of students is at an alarming level; this is because students often experience fatigue and boredom, so they are reluctant to do learning and …

Problem Of The Week: A Student-Led Initiative To Bring Mathematics To A Broader Audience, Jordan M. Sahs, Brad Horner
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Problem of the Week (POW!) is a weekly undergraduate mathematics competition hosted by two graduate students from the UNO Math Department. It started with the goal to showcase variety, creativity, and intrigue in math to those who normally feel math is dry, rote, and formulaic. Problems shine light on both hidden gems and popular recreational math, both math history and contemporary research, both iconic topics and nontraditional ones, both pure abstraction and real-world application. Now POW! aims to increase availability and visibility in Omaha and beyond. Select problems from Fall 2021 to Spring 2023 are highlighted here: these received noteworthy …

As online course offerings rise, it is important to design and facilitate courses to promote community so students feel connected to each other and the instructor and feel a sense of belonging as a scientist. Online discussions are a common feature for building and nurturing community and combating isolation. Discussions stimulate active learning, a strategy to promote participation in knowledge construction. This sense of community and science identity is important for both persistence and performance. I will share efforts to promote community while reducing extraneous cognitive load through discussion design and targeted instructor professional development. I will share data on …
Alternative Techniques For Blind Low Vision Students Enrolled In Coding Courses, Robert Jaquiss
Alternative Techniques For Blind Low Vision Students Enrolled In Coding Courses, Robert Jaquiss
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
BLV (blind low vision) students face difficulties when taking coding classes. Individual Development Environments (IDE) can be inaccessible which make it difficult if not impossible for BLV students to complete coursework. Alternative techniques are described which will allow a BLV student to successfully complete coursework. The author has found the Command Line Interface (CLI) is often a recommended alternative to a Windows based IDE interface. Many blind computer programmers use the Windows and Linux command interfaces which are described as part of this discussion.

Academic spaces in colleges and universities span classrooms for 10 students to lecture halls that hold over 600 people. During the break between consecutive classes, students from the first class must leave and the new class must find their desks, regardless of whether the room holds 10 or 600 people. Here we address the question of how the size of large lecture halls affects classroom-turnover times, focusing on non-emergency settings. By adapting the established social-force model, we treat students as individuals who interact and move through classrooms to reach their destinations. We find that social interactions and the separation time …

Dual Vocations Of Science And Religion: A Historical Case Study Of Benedictine Women, Diana Fenton
Education Faculty Publications
This study examines Catholic Benedictine sisters who majored in sciences and taught science for over 100 years at the College of Saint Benedict in Saint Joseph, Minnesota, USA. In 1913, the College of Saint Benedict began as a women’s college, expanding Saint Benedict’s Academy, a boarding high school for women. This historical organizational case study analyzed archived data to understand the benefits and challenges of women who lived religious lives and studied science. Although women, in general, are still underrepresented in the sciences, the data collected provides information on how the sisters obtained advanced degrees as early as 1923, well …

Moving From Theory To Practice: Examining Teaching Mathematics For Social Justice In An Elementary School Classroom, Krystal Giles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teaching mathematics for social justice is a distinctive approach to mathematics education that seeks to have students use mathematics to navigate their identities, understand their lived experiences, examine inequities, and become agents of change. Current research provides a rich explanation of what teaching mathematics for social justice entails. Still, there is a need for research that studies how to move from theory to practice. The purpose of this research study is to examine the experience of teaching mathematics for social justice within my fifth-grade mathematics classroom for myself and my students, analyze the extent to which students’ ethnic and academic …

Science Assessments As A Learning Opportunity: Feedforward With Multiple Attempts, Emily Faulconer
Publications
Feedback best practices support timely, high-quality feedback with application opportunity. Multiple attempts on assessments support learning gains. A learning management system can be used to automatically provide feedback for application on a future assessment attempt. Current research has not thoroughly investigated the student impacts or opinions on this combined strategy. In this study, students took a second attempt 46% of the time, scoring an average of 10.1% higher on their second attempt. More than 60% of students who failed their first attempt completed a second attempt. Students perceived the feedback as useful in preparing for their second attempt. Future research …

Approach To Problem Solving And Use Of Intuition By Engineering Technology Students, Meher R. Taleyarkhan, Anne M. Lucietto, Natalie L. F. Hobson, Therese M. Azevedo
Journal of Global Education and Research
Engineering technology students often forgo a methodical approach of solving or answering questions on assignments or exams in favor of an intuition-based approach, emphasizing educated guessing (Broberg et al., 2008). Faculty observations have noted these student solutions often provide explanations, usually sans calculations, to support answers the students believe to be reasonable when in reality deviated from the correct answer. An extensive study was developed to assess several distinctions between student intuition and use of cognition in problem solving, as related to a generalized student population. The study was comprised of a survey and interview. The survey utilized two instruments, …

With the advent of technology and increasing cultural diversity, language teachers in higher education are encouraged to push current pedagogical boundaries in search of the best approaches to cultural learning. This study responds to this pedagogical pursuit by experimenting with the integration of team-based mobile learning (TBML) in extensive reading classes mediated by the mobile instant messaging application Telegram. The research findings statistically demonstrate that TBML can develop EFL readers’ intercultural knowledge and understanding. The technological and socioconstructivist affordances of TBML also enhance reading motivation as a springboard for developing intercultural communicative competence (ICC). The research implications and limitations are …

This study aims to investigate how online learning self-efficacy, self-regulated learning, and achievement motivation affect students' academic performance in online courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study participants were students from the Office Administration Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. We used structural equation modelling (SEM) to measure the direct and indirect effects of the structural model. The results show that online learning self-efficacy positively affects self-regulated learning, achievement motivation, and academic performance. However, self-regulated learning and achievement motivation do not affect academic performance, and also do not mediate the relationship between online learning self-efficacy and academic performance.
