Nature Of Mathematics Classroom Environments In Catholic High Schools, Judith J. Hall, Christopher A. Sink Mar 2015

Nature Of Mathematics Classroom Environments In Catholic High Schools, Judith J. Hall, Christopher A. Sink

Journal of Catholic Education

In an attempt to reveal the various types of learning environments present in 30 mathematics classrooms in five Catholic high schools, this replication study examined student (N = 602) perceptions of their classrooms using the Classroom Environment Scale. Student attitudes toward mathematics were assessed by the Estes Attitude Scale. Extending previous research conducted in public high schools, this study delineated two basic types of learning environments (teacher-centered and student-centered) in Catholic high schools. In contrast with students in public schools, students in these parochial schools reported positive attitudes toward mathematics regardless of the type of learning environment. Discussion of the …

Fostering Spatial Skill Acquisition By General Chemistry Students, Deborah Carlisle, Julian Tyson, Martina Nieswandt

Administration and Staff Articles and Research

The study of chemistry requires the understanding and use of spatial relationships, which can be challenging for many students. Prior research has shown that there is a need to develop students' spatial reasoning skills. To that end, this study implemented guided activities designed to strengthen students' spatial skills, with the aim of improving their understanding of spatial relationships that exist within and between molecules. Undergraduate STEM majors, taking the second semester of a two-semester general chemistry course, engaged in these activities. This study followed a quasi-experimental design, in which the experimental (n = 209) and the control group (n = …

Scientific Teaching: Defining A Taxonomy Of Observable Practices, Brian A. Couch, Tanya L. Brown, Tyler J. Schelpat, Mark J. Graham, Jennifer K. Knight

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Over the past several decades, numerous reports have been published advocating for changes to undergraduate science education. These national calls inspired the formation of the National Academies Summer Institutes on Undergraduate Education in Biology (SI), a group of regional workshops to help faculty members learn and implement interactive teaching methods. The SI curriculum promotes a pedagogical framework called Scientific Teaching (ST), which aims to bring the vitality of modern research into the classroom by engaging students in the scientific discovery process and using student data to inform the ongoing development of teaching methods. With the spread of ST, the need …

Project-Based Science For General Education College Students And Seventh Graders: Pitfalls And Pointers, Walter S. Borowski, Malcolm P. Frisbie, Tara Shepperson, Linda Frost

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

We teach a general-education science course for honors students, who in turn mentor disadvantaged seventh graders through a water quality investigation of a local stream. Activities for both groups involve all aspects of a scientific project: scientific background, local context, project design, data collection and analysis, and communication of scientific results. On successive weeks, we first lead our college students through each step in the process then the honors students mentor middle school students through those same steps. College and middle school teachers act as facilitators, and each honors student is responsible for about 6 to 8 middle schoolers. The …

Coming Up With A Good Question Is Not Easy: A Proof, Joe Lorkowski, Luc Longpre, Olga Kosheleva, Salem Benferhat

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Ability to ask good questions is an important part of learning skills. Coming up with a good question, a question that can really improve one's understanding of the topic, is not easy. In this paper, we prove -- on the example of probabilistic and fuzzy uncertainty -- that the problem of selecting of a good question is indeed hard.

Parents And The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Rebecca Anne Roberts Mar 2015

Parents And The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Rebecca Anne Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

As the majority of the nation has adopted Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM), studying parents' resistance to these standards becomes vital in improving parental involvement and support of school mathematics reforms. Using Schoenfeld's (2011) model for decision making as a framework, an online survey and six interviews were conducted. The results of the survey showed that parents' resources related to student experiences and the mathematical methods students are performing are affecting their resistance toward CCSSM. The survey results also showed that parents' orientations related to the difficulty of the standards and politics affects their resistance toward CCSSM. The …

The Effect Of Aleks Math Support On Standardized Math Test Scores In Middle School, Amy Dawn Fanusi

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A quantitative causal-comparative and correlation research studied Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) at a middle school in rural Georgia. The purpose was to determine if computerized math instruction, as measured by ALEKS, was more effective than traditional teacher instruction with students in math support in order to pass the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). The study also explored the relationship among other variables: if the percentage of concepts a student completed in ALEKS affected student success on the CRCT, and if gender played a factor in achievement on the CRCT when enrolled in the ALEKS computer math …

Climate Change Skeptics Teach Climate Literacy? A Content Analysis Of Children’S Books, Julie Thomas Feb 2015

Climate Change Skeptics Teach Climate Literacy? A Content Analysis Of Children’S Books, Julie Thomas

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

This research focused on skeptical climate change literature designed for children and parents. The purpose of the research was to explore how these pseudo‐educational materials convey a logic of nonproblematicity about climate change (McCright & Dunlap, 2000). Using rhetorical analyses procedures developed from previous excavations in skeptical discourses, this study identified: (a) common forms of climate skepticism, (b) frames for climate change policy making, (c) areas of contested scientific knowledge, and (d) appeals for managing the uncertainty of climate change. The results suggest that the logic of non‐problematicity about environmental problems is bolstered by contradictory forms of climate change skepticism …

Creative Discussions Or Memorization? Maybe Both? (On The Example Of Teaching Computer Science), Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We all strive to be creative in our teaching, but there is often not enough time to make all the topics creative fun. So sometimes, we teach memorization first, understanding later. We do it, but we often do it without seriously analyzing which topics to "sacrifice" to memorization. In this talk, we use simple mathematical models of learning to come up with relevant recommendations: Namely, all the topics form a dependency graph, and if we do not have enough time to allow students to treat all topics with equal creativity, then the most reasonable topics for memorization first are the …

Is It Still Science If You Don’T Call It ‘Science’? Discovery Orientation And Science Identity Among Middle School Youth., Patricia Wonch Hill, Julia Mcquillan

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

To investigate the role of friendships in science identity formation, we are conducting a longitudinal survey of 441 students in an ethnically diverse Title I Middle School. This research-based approach, framed within a sociological conceptual model, will provide depth in our understanding of how to motivate and engage youth from groups underrepresented in biomedical science, and will contribute to the sociological literature on identity formation. Science educators assume most youth have a natural propensity toward science and inquiry, and will engage with science activities and ideas if they are presented in fun and appealing ways. We call this natural propensity …
