Students Talk About Energy In Project- Based Inquiry Science, Benedikt W. Harrer, Virginia J. Flood, Michael C. Wittmann Jan 2013

Students Talk About Energy In Project- Based Inquiry Science, Benedikt W. Harrer, Virginia J. Flood, Michael C. Wittmann

Faculty Publications

We examine the types of emergent language eighth grade students in rural Maine middle schools use when they discuss energy in their first experiences with Project-Based Inquiry Science: Energy, a research-based curriculum that uses a specific language for talking about energy. By comparative analysis of the language used by the curriculum materials to students’ language, we find that students’ talk is at times more aligned with a Stores and Transfer model of energy than the Forms model supported by the curriculum.

Theory Guided Professional Development In Early Childhood Science Education, Soo-Young Hong, Julia C. Torquati, Victoria J. Molfese Jan 2013

Theory Guided Professional Development In Early Childhood Science Education, Soo-Young Hong, Julia C. Torquati, Victoria J. Molfese

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

The importance of early and developmentally appropriate science education is increasingly recognized. Consequently, creation of common guidelines and standards in early childhood science education has begun (National Research Council (NRC), 2012), and researchers, practitioners, and policy makers have shown great interest in aligning professional development with the new guidelines and standard. There are some important issues that need to be addressed in order to successfully implement guidelines and make progress toward accomplishing standards. Early childhood teachers have expressed a lack of confidence in teaching science and nature (Torquati, Cutler, Gilkerson, & Sarver, in press) and have limited science and pedagogical …

Web-Based Peer Tutoring In Science Education, Aaron Mac Raighne

Other resources

Peer-instruction has been shown to have a very positive effect on students’ engagement and learning. PeerWise is a web-tool designed to allow peer-tutoring between students within a large class group. Students can write, answer and discuss Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) based on their work in-class. It is low-cost and low-maintenance software which has become increasingly popular across many subject disciplines as a method to introduce a peer-tutoring aspect to course work. In this study we introduce PeerWise as a form of continuous assessment to a wide and varied cohort of science students (N=509) across disciplines, undergraduate years, levels (certificate to …

Chalcogenide Sol-Gel Assembly: Controlling The Kinetics Of Nanocrystal Aggregation And Film Formation For Applications In Optoelectronics, Lasantha Korala

Wayne State University Dissertations

The dissertation work is focused on 1) optimization of gelation conditions in order to tune the properties of the resultant gel structures with the aim of addressing application-specific needs; 2) incorporation of gel materials into device architectures for evaluation of intrinsic properties and assessment of suitability for optoelectronic applications.

Sol-gel assembly of CdSe/ZnS core/shell NCs typically results in opaque gel materials, which is one of the major obstacles for their use in optoelectronic applications such as LEDs. Macroscopic properties (i.e. transparency) of CdSe/ZnS gel structures were tuned by controlling the aggregation and gelation kinetics by means of oxidant concentration. The …

Teacher's Toolkit: Differentiating Inquiry, Brooke A. Whitworth, Jennifer L. Maeng, Randy L. Bell

Publications

Differentiated instruction and teaching science as inquiry are two pedagogical approaches frequently discussed among science teachers. Teachers know these approaches are important but often have difficulty translating them into their classroom science instruction. This article describes how to differentiate a density investigation for variations in student readiness by varying the level of inquiry using an approach that is easily translated to experiments in any science content area.

Differentiating Math Instruction In An Elementary Classroom: Teacher Perspectives, Amy Lynn Zagaros Hoff Jan 2013

Differentiating Math Instruction In An Elementary Classroom: Teacher Perspectives, Amy Lynn Zagaros Hoff

Theses and Graduate Projects

Classroom teachers of a diverse group of learners are presented with a conundrum: how can math curriculum be effectively presented to students in order to ensure that all students are meeting required learning targets? Research shows that whole group instructional methods do not meet the needs of struggling and gifted students. So how can teachers change instruction to promote student learning for all? The purpose of this action research was to discover effective strategies to differentiate math instruction in an elementary classroom. In this qualitative research, data were collected through five structured interviews with classroom teachers. The teachers represented grades …

The Impact Of Interdisciplinary Project Work On Student Engagement In Mathematics Learning, Kristin Sonquist

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study examines the impact of interdisciplinary project work on student engagement in mathematics learning. Students in a multiage first and second grade classroom participated in both interdisciplinary and traditional math work. Data were collected through observation, field notes and student work and were analyzed to determine whether sfudent engagement improved during the interdisciplinary project work. Indicators of engagement were identified, and found to coincide with connection, a social context, active learning and challenge. Interdisciplinary project work was found to be likely to include those elements of engagement. Finally, embedded and standardized assessments indicated a strong correlation between interdisciplinary project …

The Relationship Between Double Dosing And Middle School Math Student Achievement, Jon Franco Jan 2013

The Relationship Between Double Dosing And Middle School Math Student Achievement, Jon Franco

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This study examined the following research question: Is there a significant difference in math performance between the total sample of below grade level 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students engaged in double dosing and the sample of below grade level 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students not engaged in double dosing? Double dosing means pulling struggling students from elective classes during the school day in favor of an extra remediation class generally in the areas of reading, writing and math. The practice of double dosing is more prevalent within the elementary schools; however, as a result of the high stakes …

Scientific Argumentation As A Foundation For The Design Of Inquiry-Based Science Instruction, A. Falk, L. Brodsky Jan 2013

Scientific Argumentation As A Foundation For The Design Of Inquiry-Based Science Instruction, A. Falk, L. Brodsky

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Despite the attention that inquiry has received in science education research and policy, a coherent means for implementing inquiry in the classroom has been missing [1]. In recent research, scientific argumentation has received increasing attention for its role in science and in science education [2]. In this article, we propose that organizing a unit of instruction around building a scientific argument can bring inquiry practices together in the classroom in a coherent way. We outline a framework for argumentation, focusing on arguments that are central to science—arguments for the best explanation. We then use this framework as the basis for …

Where Is Earth Science? Mining For Opportunities In Chemistry, Physics, And Biology, Julie Thomas, Toni Ivey, Jim Puckette Jan 2013

Where Is Earth Science? Mining For Opportunities In Chemistry, Physics, And Biology, Julie Thomas, Toni Ivey, Jim Puckette

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The Earth sciences are newly marginalized in K–12 classrooms. With few high schools offering Earth science courses, students’ exposure to the Earth sciences relies on the teacher’s ability to incorporate Earth science material into a biology, chemistry, or physics course. “G.E.T. (Geoscience Experiences for Teachers) in the Field” is an exploratory program funded by the National Science Foundation aimed to increase teachers’ geoscience interest and content knowledge. Participant teachers (n = 7) included non–Earth science teachers from underrepresented groups and/or high schools with a high percentage of students from underrepresented groups. A variety of quantitative and qualitative measures assessed …

The Processes Of Change On Learning Literacy And Numeracy In South Australian Primary Schools, I Gusti Ngurah Darmawan, Carol Aldous Jan 2013

The Processes Of Change On Learning Literacy And Numeracy In South Australian Primary Schools, I Gusti Ngurah Darmawan, Carol Aldous

Shannon Research Press

Success in science and mathematics is predicated on successful literacy and numeracy learning. Yet schools and communities across the country struggle to negotiate factors that both impede and facilitate such learning - particularly factors over which they have some control. Working with data more comprehensive than that used previously and applying statistical methods only recently developed, researchers from the South Australian hub of the centre for Science, Information and Communication Technology and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR-SA) seek answers to three basic questions. What factors influence performance in Literacy and Numeracy? Does living in a rural and …

A New Plant Record For Iowa: Lactuca Hirsuta (Asteraceae), Thomas L. Eddy Jan 2013

A New Plant Record For Iowa: Lactuca Hirsuta (Asteraceae), Thomas L. Eddy

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A new record of a native vascular plant, Lactuca hirsuta Muhlenberg ex Nuttall var. sanguinea (Bigelow) Fernald, is reported for Iowa. A specimen was collected in 1983 by the author during a study of the Swaledale railroad prairie in Cerro Gordo County, north central Iowa (Eddy 1988). The plant was inexplicably excluded in the species catalogue when a Swaledale railroad flora was published in 1988; thus, this “new” Iowa record in 2013 was collected 30 years prior. The voucher specimen was “re-discovered” by Dr. Neil A. Harriman at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (OSH), and its identification verified.

Increasing Automaticity, Sara Burns Jan 2013

Increasing Automaticity, Sara Burns

Online Theses and Dissertations

Automaticity is defined as the process of developing fluency in mathematics and the ability to answer a basic math problem routinely. Automaticity is one of the most important skills that a student can possess in mathematics. While there are many ways that an educator can implement strategies to increase automaticity in the classroom, the purpose of this study was to determine which of these methods of implementation is more effective: requiring students to practice automaticity three times per week or requiring students to practice automaticity five times per week.

Smaf: A Soil Health Assessment Tool, D. L. Karlen, C. D. Nance, D. L. Dinnes, D. W. Meek

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) was developed to help quantify soil quality/health effects of tillage, crop rotation, and other soil management practices. Our objective was to determine if the SMAF could detect soil health differences after growing a single winter triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) crop. Soil samples were collected from 0 to 7.5- and 7.5 to 15- cm depth increments during the 2003 – 2004 and 2004 – 2005 growing seasons near Ames and Lewis, IA, and analyzed for several potential soil quality indicators. The SMAF analysis showed higher soil quality ratings for surface than subsurface samples. It also …

Investigating Latina/O Mathematics Students' Perceptions Of Interpersonal Relationships In College Mathematics, Victoria Rose Larabell

Open Access Theses

It is known that interpersonal relationships are significant to the success of the Latina/o mathematics learner. Unfortunately, interpersonal relationships in mathematics are understudied. For this reason, this study seeks to answer the following question: How do Latina/o mathematics students perceive their interpersonal relationships with their mathematics professors, peers in mathematics, and families with respect to mathematics? To explore the role of such relationships in Latinas/os experiences in mathematics, I define a meaningful relationship in mathematics education (MRIME) as interactions between two parties in which one party acknowledges the other party as a sociocultural being and fosters their mathematics identity. This …

Challenging Pre-Service Students' Teaching Perspectives In An Inquiry-Focused Program, J. L. Pecore, A. Shelton Jan 2013

Challenging Pre-Service Students' Teaching Perspectives In An Inquiry-Focused Program, J. L. Pecore, A. Shelton

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Inquiry teaching based on constructivist learning theory has been an emphasis in pre-service education for over a decade. In general, a developmental teaching perspective supports inquiry-based instruction where teachers view learners as constructors of knowledge and teaching as providing questions, problems, and challenges that form a bridge from the learners' prior knowledge to a new, more sophisticated form of reasoning. Since teaching perspectives influence student learning, teacher effectiveness, and teacher attrition, challenging pre-service teachers to overcome experience-based convictions of a transmission perspective is necessary in teacher education. In this study, we examined the teaching perspectives of secondary, pre-service methods students …
