Using The History Of Research On Sickle-Cell Anemia To Affect Preservice Teachers’ Conceptions Of The Nature Of Science, Eric M. Howe Apr 2004

Using The History Of Research On Sickle-Cell Anemia To Affect Preservice Teachers’ Conceptions Of The Nature Of Science, Eric M. Howe

Dissertations

Preservice elementary teachers enrolled in an elective biology course participated in an eight-class unit of instruction based on the history of research in understanding the disease sickle-cell anemia. Students were introduced to the disease as a “mystery” for them to solve, and subsequently developed an understanding of the disease from several disciplines in biology (e.g., genetics, ecology, evolution, molecular biology). The unit involved open-ended problems in which students examined evidence and developed explanations in a manner analogous to the reasoning used by Anthony C. Allison and his colleagues during the early to middle part of the twentieth century.

Contributing Factors To Student Success In Anatomy & Physiology: Lower Outside Workload & Better Preparation., David E. Harris, Lynn Hannum, Sat Gupta

School of Nursing

Presents a study that examined the factors associated with the success in undergraduate Anatomy & Physiology coursework at Lewiston-Auburn College, University of Southern Maine in Lewiston. Details of the grading system used for the period of the study; Analysis of the independent variables that correlated significantly with the final course grades of the students; Relation between the amount of previous study of mathematics and science in both high school and college and the final course grades of the students.

Student Explorations Of Quantum Effects In Leds And Luninescent Devices, Lawrence Escalada, N. Sanjay Rebekki, Dean A. Zollman Mar 2004

Student Explorations Of Quantum Effects In Leds And Luninescent Devices, Lawrence Escalada, N. Sanjay Rebekki, Dean A. Zollman

Faculty Work

We developed activity-based instructional units to introduce basic quantum principles to students with limited physics and mathematics backgrounds. To emphasize the practical applications of contemporary physics, we introduced concepts using the contexts of light-emitting devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fluorescent lamps, and glow-in-the-dark toys. As our standard of living becomes more dependent on the latest developments in science and technology, our students' literacy must be at a level that enables them to make educated decisions on science- and technology-related issues and their everyday applications. Students need to have at least a basic understanding of 20th-century physics and its applications …

Magical Miscellany, Francis Su Feb 2004

Magical Miscellany, Francis Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

What is a Math Fun Fact, you ask? A Math Fun Fact is any mathematical tidbit that can be presented or grasped quickly, is surprising or captivating, can be generally enjoyed by friends of mathematics, and is hopefully fun! Of course, part of the fun is thinking about why the Fun Fact is true--so we won't spoil the fun. Though, we may give you some hints and references

However, since there are infinitely many Math Fun Facts (prove this), we can only bring you a few each time... here are a few whose conclusions might be considered "magical".

Making Thinking Visible: A Method To Encourage Science Writing In Upper Elementary Grades, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Robert C. Calfee Jan 2004

Making Thinking Visible: A Method To Encourage Science Writing In Upper Elementary Grades, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Robert C. Calfee

Education Faculty Articles and Research

In order to make a dramatic change in the way teachers approach science writing, the authors found it necessary to address both science instruction as a whole and the use of writing during various stages. To guide them in this endeavor and communicate a concrete idea of an ideal foundation for highly effective science writing to teachers, the authors turned to the CORE Model of Instruction. The CORE Model on instruction, which was originally developed as a representation of the manner in which reading and writing can be linked and reinforcing to each other, is described in this article. The …

Students’ Assessment Of Biology Education At Marshall University, Chris A. Barker Jan 2004

Students’ Assessment Of Biology Education At Marshall University, Chris A. Barker

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this thesis research was to evaluate the quality of scientific education offered in the College of Science’s Department of Biology at Marshall University. The objectives of this study were to emphasize the important aspects of higher education assessment, point out that a scientifically literate citizenry is imperative for society to function effectively, and to determine what factors contribute to differences among students with regard to their perception of the quality of scientific education they are receiving at Marshall. A survey questionnaire was administered to students in eleven biological science courses during the Fall semester of 2003 and …

Using Humanistic Content And Teaching Methods To Motivate Students And Counteract Negative Perceptions Of Mathematics, Roger Haglund

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

This paper examines the following questions: How is math commonly taught, why is it taught this way, and what are the outcomes? Who are some of the voices calling for change and what are they saying? Can a humanistic approach produce positive results in students who have learned to dislike math and have not been successful in a traditional classroom?

On Reflection, James Anthony Gibbons Jan 2004

On Reflection, James Anthony Gibbons

Shannon Research Press

This book commences with a criticism of constructivism as the basis for curriculum design followed by an attempt to argue an alternative. It is possible to proceed to criticise constructivism as the basis for curriculum design by illustrating the issues with references to extracts from curricula used by various countries and Departments of Education. This book takes a different route. The assumption is made that criticism will be clearer if related to a substantial part of a curriculum rather than extracts from a variety of curricula from a variety of countries. The focus is on the recently developed, and currently …

Thinking About Science And Christian Orthodox Beliefs: A Survey Study Of Preservice Elementary Teachers, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving Jan 2004

Thinking About Science And Christian Orthodox Beliefs: A Survey Study Of Preservice Elementary Teachers, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Since its origination with Andrew Dickson White, the Warfare Metaphor has been used to characterize the relationship between science and religion, specifically orthodox Christianity. Though thoroughly discredited by historians of science, the ideological descendants of Thomas Huxley, who spoke of science in quasi-religious terms, have kept the Warfare Metaphor alive. On the other hand, there are substantial numbers of Christians who at least appear to oppose science given their high-profile opposition to the general theory of evolution. The purpose of the research reported in this paper was to examine this specific question: does anti-science sentiment increase with increasing orthodox Christian …

Assessing High School Students' Conceptions Of The Size, Age, And Distance Of Astronomical Objects, Tracy Jean Lawrence

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this research study is to identify student conceptions about the size, distance, and age of various objects associated with space science. After reviewing the literature related to this study, there seems to be a need for continued research at the high school level in the field of astronomy conceptualization.

Making Science Teams Work, Roxanne Greitz Miller Jan 2004

Making Science Teams Work, Roxanne Greitz Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Science teachers, likely have more experience with students working together than teachers in any other subject area due to teaming students for hands-on activities. While the importance of teamwork is emphasized in the National Science Education Standards, getting teams to actually work-meaning getting students to share equally in the academic assignments and to interact in a positive and productive manner-often eludes even the best of teachers. It has been the author's experience as a middle level science teacher that effective teaming requires careful planning, clear communication with students and parents, relevant motivational strategies, and arranging the classroom and activities to …

In Australia, 10030 students in 414 schools participated in the main sample of TIMSS 2002/03. Results are reported as average scores with the standard error, as distributions of scores, and as percentages of students who attain the international benchmarks, for countries and specific groups of students within Australia.
