The Use Of Traditional And Contemporary Instructional Strategies And Materials In The Elementary Mathematics Classroom, J. E. Riley

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Elementary school teachers were surveyed about the strategies and materials they use to teach elementary school mathematics. A list of twenty strategies and materials derived from the Changes in Content and Emphasis sections of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics were examined [1]. These strategies represent both contemporary and traditional approaches to the teaching of mathematics. Teachers were asked to respond to each survey item by indicating how often these strategies were used in their classrooms. The Commonwealth-funded Project Good Start was a longitudinal study of children during their year before school and the first year of school, involving preschool centres and schools across Australia. How Museum Educators Build And Carry Out Their Profession: An Examination Of Situated Learning Within Practice, Elsa B. Bailey

Educational Studies Dissertations

This study explores the ways and means that museum educators build their expertise to practice museum education. A qualitative methodology was utilized in this examination, incorporating aspects of grounded theory and phenomenological research. Fifteen museum educators in science-related museums in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, who worked extensively with teachers, were selected as respondents.

Combining Science And Reading Materials To Teach Comprehension Strategies, Melena Haskovec

This paper describes a curriculum development project in which science and reading were combined to teach reading comprehension strategies to kindergarten and first grade children. Nonfiction science texts were purchased. The teachers collaboratively created and implemented lesson plans for three science units and one social studies unit. The combined classes met once every six days from January to May.

The children were paired across grade levels to read the texts, participate in the strategy instruction and complete the guided practice activities. Pre and post project measures of first graders' growth in reading comprehension showed that all the first grade students …

Peer-Led Team Learning has been in use in Introductory Biology and Introductory Chemistry since Fall 1999 at the University of Portland. lts effect on improved conceptual understanding, retention of students, and improvement in study skills will be discussed. An ancillary, but no less important benefit in the development of interest in science teaching among the peer leaders, is also addressed.

Success in mathematics by underrepresented and nontraditional college students is measured not only by academic performance (grades), but also by the continued participation and persistence of these students in mathematics coursework. The Math Excel program at Oregon State University attempts to build "learning communities" with a sharp academic focus in support of students concurrently taking introductory level mathematics courses. The Math Excel program is based heavily on Uri Treisman's Emerging Scholars Workshop model of collaborative problem solving.
