Using A Constant Tie Delay To Teach Measurement To Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities, Emily S. Lovell
Using A Constant Tie Delay To Teach Measurement To Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities, Emily S. Lovell
Theses & Honors Papers
The purpose of this study was to teach the parts of an inch in sixteenths, using a constant time delay procedure. Constant time delay is a virtually effortless, or near errorless, instructional process involving the simultaneous delivery of a target stimulus and a controlling prompt for a limited number of trials, followed by trials where the target stimulus is presented, but the controlling prompt is delayed for a constant time period. The study was conducted with 6 sixth-grade students in a self contained math class for students with learning disabilities. The subject group contained 5 males and 1 female. Each …

Responses To Teacher Feedback On Errors Differ By Age And Gender, Sandra P. Clarkson, William (Bill) H. Williams Ph.D
Publications and Research
Many students enter Hunter College's developmental mathematics program committing errors (mis)learned years earlier. These errors typically persist into the adult years and it is important to correct them specifically; simply reteaching concepts is not sufficient. Furthermore, there is a strong correlation between completion rate and student perception of the instructor's concern. To address both factors, we developed and tested an instructional technique to see whether giving detailed feedback to students about their errors would facilitate progress through the course. We found that the use of the feedback method had a clear positive effect on women; while for men, complex age …

Instructional Lessons And Activities For Middle School Science Teachers, Sally Josephine Rich
Instructional Lessons And Activities For Middle School Science Teachers, Sally Josephine Rich
All Graduate Projects
The significance of providing an inquiry based, hands-on approach to teaching science to middle school students was researched. Several sources supported this teaching method. The research suggested having students participate in engaging, thought provoking, and problem solving science activities to optimize successful student learning. Lessons and activities, which focus on active student learning, critical thinking and problem solving, were developed to enhance and revise the existing curriculum for five chosen textbooks. These selected science texts were intended for middle school sixth and seventh grade students.
Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar
Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Approximately 3% of Iowa's forests are contained in state parks and preserves. In addition to aesthetics and recreation, these protected forests provide a vital service in the unique opportunities they provide for forest research. As intact ecosystems where natural ecological processes dominate, they provide standards by which we measure the effects of livestock pasturing, methods of timber harvest, and other manipulations of managed forests. A number of current studies and public programs emphasize the importance of natural diversity in forests. They rely on state parks and preserves to provide a measure of potential diversity for a given region of the …

ABOUT THE TEST REPORT AND USE OF THE DATA
The test data contained in this report are a tabulation of the results of a series of tests. Due to the restricted format of these pages, only a limited amount of data and not all of the tractor specifications are included. The full OECD report contains usually about 30 pages of data and specifications. The test data were obtained for each tractor under similar conditions and therefore, provide a means of comparison of performance based on a limited set of reported data.

EXPLANATION OF THE TEST PROCEDURE
General
Tractors are tested at the University of Nebraska according to the Agricultural Tractor Test Code approved by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers or official Nebraska test procedure.
The manufacturer selects the tractor to be tested and certifies that it is a stock model. Each tractor is equipped with the common power consuming accessories such as power steering, power lift pump, generator, etc., if available. Power consuming accessories may be disconnected only when the means for disconnecting can be reached from the operating station. An official representative of …

Electronic Portfolio For Mathematical Problem Solving In The Elementary School, Patricia Amelia Deragisch
Theses Digitization Project
Electronic portfolio for mathematical problem solving in the elementary school is an authentic assessment tool for teachers and students to utilize in evaluating mathematical skills. It is a computer-based interactive software program to allow teachers to easily access student work in the problem solving area for assessment purposes, and to store multimedia work samples over time.

Cultural Aspects Of Learning Science, William W. Cobern, Glen Aikenhead
Cultural Aspects Of Learning Science, William W. Cobern, Glen Aikenhead
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
Over the past few decades our focus on learning science has evolved (Aikenhead, 1996; Cobern, 1993, 1994; Solomon, 1994). The psychological perspectives on the individual learner of earlier years, such as Piaget, Ausubel, and personal constructivism (West and Pines, 1985), have expanded to encompass sociological perspectives that contextualize learning in social settings; for instance, social constructivism, science for specific social purposes, and situated cognition (Goodnow, 1990; Hennessy, 1993; Layton, Davey and Jenkins, 1986; O'Loughlin, 1992; Solomon, 1987; Tharp and Gallimore, 1988). This chapter addresses the next stage in the evolution of our focus on learning science—an anthropological perspective that contextualizes …
Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout
Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout
ACMS Journal 2004
Chartres Cathedral is highly regarded as a magnificent Gothic structure including beautiful stained glass windows and striking sculptures. Mathematics, especially geometry, played a central role in the design of this cathedral. This paper explores that mathematics and how it contributes to the overall effectiveness of the design.
Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch
Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch
ACMS Journal 2004
The philosophy of mathematics has provided insight on questions of foundations and mathematical truth; however, it has not been very fruitful in guiding the practice of mathematics. This paper attempts to find points of contact between a Christian worldview and the choice of mathematical projects and methods. Three areas are considered: (i) dubitability in current research, (ii) the intrinsic value of contemporary mathematics to contemporary society, and (iii) the affirmation of human value in the use of mathematics. Finally, a framework for valuing mathematics is proposed as an encouragement to think more deeply about how a Christian might choose a …

Writing Science Through Critical Thinking, Marilyn F. Moriarty
Writing Science Through Critical Thinking, Marilyn F. Moriarty
Books by Hollins Faculty and Staff
Written and extensively class tested with NSF/NIH support, this timely and useful text addresses a crucial need which is acknowledged in most universities and colleges. It is the need for students to learn to write in the context of their field of study; in this case science. Although numerous "how to" writing books have been published, few, if any, address the central pedagogical issues underlying the process of learning to think and write scientifically. The direct connection between this writing skill and that of critical thinking is developed with engaging style by the author, an English professor. Moriarty's book is …

A Model Fourth Grade Science Curriculum Based On Multiple Intelligence Theory And Washington State's Essential Academic Learning Requirements For Science, Kerry Lynn Ward
A Model Fourth Grade Science Curriculum Based On Multiple Intelligence Theory And Washington State's Essential Academic Learning Requirements For Science, Kerry Lynn Ward
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project was to design and develop a model fourth grade science curriculum based on Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences and in line with Washington State's Essential Academic Learning Requirements for Science. Along with this, assessment criteria were to be designed for each learning activity. To accomplish this purpose, current research on Multiple Intelligence Theory, assessment, curriculum development and Washington State's Essential Academic Learning Requirements for Science were reviewed. Finally, student learning objectives, learning activities and corresponding assessment criteria were adapted and developed.
