The Cladocera Of Lake West Okoboji, Iowa - Revisited, Kenneth L. Lang

Seven stations, established in 1968 to sample Cladocera, were sampled again, using the same methods, in 1988. Seven species, all of them in low abundance, are new records for Lake West Okoboji. In 1988, there was little difference 1) in the ranking of the stations relative to abundance of cladocerans, 2) the distribution and abundance of the species by habitat-type, 3) the seasonality of the predominant species in the specific habitats, 4) the temporal patterns of the number of species and total cladoceran abundance in the specific habitats, compared to 1968. Anatomical Characterization Of Western Corn Rootworm Damage In Adventitious Roots Of Maize, Walter E. Riedell, Alice Y. Kim

Corn rootworms are one of the most economically damaging insect pests of maize, yet little is known about the feeding behavior of the larvae. This study was conducted to determine which tissues of the adventitious roots of maize are damaged by western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) larval feeding. Root axes (10 cm long) were removed from the fifth node of greenhouse-grown maize plants. Root segments 2 cm long, excised 4 or 6 cm from the root tip, were infested with second or third stage larvae, respectively, (0, 1, 3, or 6 larvae per segment) for a period of …

The central objective of this project is to enhance the middle school eighthgrade Earth Science curriculum by developing or adapting existing laboratory activities to model hands-on, inquiry, and discovery learning methods. These laboratory activities are designed to encourage independent student-centered learning as opposed to teacher-centered and directed activities.

The project also explored the nature of the science laboratory as it exists in classrooms today and how it can be improved through an understanding of the nature and process of science.

Many students do not picture themselves in science-related careers primarily because they are not informed about the opportunities available and the secondary and post-secondary education required for those jobs. To most students, people in science careers include physicians, nurses, scientists (whatever that means), engineers and possibly chemists. The activity explained in this article was developed at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics by the authors for SPICA Activities. SPICA is the acronym for the Support Program for Instructional Competency in Astronomy and is funded by the National Science Foundation. Thirty-three astronomy and science educators were selected from throughout the United States to be involved in the three-week SPICA astronomy education workshop during August 1989.

Iowa agriculture benefits from two important natural resources, the rich soils that blanket the landscape and sufficient precipitation, in most years, to produce large crop yields. While precipitation is essential to farmers, many of Iowa's soils, especially in the northcentral part of the state, are poorly drained and at times contain excess water that can hinder field operations or ruin crops. In these areas, farm fields are often artificially drained by buried tile lines leading to ditches or to streams. Another, but less common, method is the agricultural drainage well, a shaft which funnels excess water directly underground. The upper …

Recycling Paper To Save Landfills And Trees, William H. Gilbert

While some groups want to save tropical rain forests or marshy wetlands, other conservation-minded groups are interested in judiciously using sanitary landfills, or at least lengthening their lifetime by recycling paper (Hovelson, 1989). The Rolling Hills Audubon Society (RHAS), centered in Indianola (Warren County), sponsored two newspaper collections during 1989 in hopes of raising funds and reducing waste paper going to the South Central Iowa Sanitary Landfill located east of Winterset and south of Highway 92 in Madison County.

Recent national reports indicate that math and science education is in a crisis in the United States (Changing America, 1988 and Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, 1988). Concern has been expressed by many national groups that we must attract and keep more young people in the pipeline to meet future needs for scientists and engineers. Because the need for scientists is projected to increase by 45 percent, for engineers 32 percent and for technicians 36 percent, but the population of 18-24 year olds entering the labor force is expected to decline, the U.S. must attract more women and …

The July 1990 issue of Mac World discussed the issue of display terminal safety. The evidence that display monitors emit significant radiation which may be strong enough to be a health hazard has been mounting since the early 1980's. After conducting their own tests, the publishers of MacWorld concluded that extremely low-frequency magnetic field emissions from monitors are worrisome.

ChemSource is a new project designed to provide detailed support for inexperienced secondary school chemistry teachers (pre-service teachers or inservice teachers in their first three years of chemistry teaching). The two major components that will be developed, piloted, revised, tested and disseminated over the next three years are SourceBook and SourceView. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation and originated in the Society Committee on Education of the American Chemical Society. Its principal investigator is Mary Virginia Orna.

The New York Academy of Science recently announced a suspension of its annual Art of Science Competition this year. The decision was a result of budget cutbacks in the National Science Foundation (a major supporter of the program) and an unexpected phasing-out of a multi-year grant from Dow Chemical U.S.A. (the competition's major corporate sponsor since 1988).
