Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

A few years ago I was speaking with a distinguished professor of science explaining to him my concern for the low level of science interest among school level students. I remarked that in my view a major contributor to this lack of interest was the methodology used to teach science. Students forsake science because their own orientation to the world does not allow them to appreciate science as it is typically taught (Cobern, 1989a). The Need For Creativity In The Science Classroom, Lowell Wiele

To recognize the need for creativity in the classroom as one of the growing concerns in the educational community today is not difficult. When the various teaching methods in science are evaluated, the highly pronounced need for more creativity in science instruction is evident. Few teachers, it seems, experiment actively with teaching techniques and curriculum materials. Most find what works for them and stick with it, and, often, this means teaching science as a lecture course (with some group discussion and a few laboratory experiences). Beginning teachers tend to imitate the persons they considered to have been their best teachers. …

Recently, we have, as a nation, come to realize the vital need for technology literacy among our citizens if we are to cope in a global society. Iowa educational leaders are striving to gain a competitive edge m this area. Working for this edge, the Iowa Department of Education has hired a technology consultant, and guides are being refined to help educators address the topic in their curricula. Standards have been adopted by the State Board of Education relative to telecommunications in Iowa classrooms.

The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has announced the availability of two teacher workshops for the summer of 1991. Both workshops are continuations of ongoing projects designed to build teacher-agent networks to increase the use of activity-based science teaching across the United States.

Russ Wiley was recently appointed director of the Iowa Junior Academy of Science. He replaces Joe Moore who has left the state. Wiley is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Northern Iowa.

In the fall of 1989, I conducted a survey of chemistry teachers in the state of Iowa to gather information on the current conditions of chemistry teaching and the continuing education needs of chemistry teachers. This survey asked chemistry teachers about their training in science and chemistry, the percentage of students in their schools who elect to take chemistry, the text books in current use, the amount of time spent in laboratory experimentation and what they saw as their greatest need for update workshops.

We envisioned a conversation something like this taking place at the dinner table of one of our students who had read a chapter on animal habitats that day in school. This imaginary conversation was the impetus for the idea of a classroom "bug zoo." Our goal was to supplement the school district's curriculum with activities that emphasized science process skills and promoted the enjoyment of science and scientific activity. Because we felt that the skills necessary for reading nonfiction are a critical aspect of science instruction, we were committed to using our district's text. We hoped our project would help …

Iowa educators have the opportunity to study Environmental Issues Instruction this year thanks to a grant from the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) act fund.
