Seventh-Grade Student Achievement In Length, Perimeter, Area And Volume, Cathy Pierce Jan 1987

Seventh-Grade Student Achievement In Length, Perimeter, Area And Volume, Cathy Pierce

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to measure seventh-grade achievement in finding length, perimeter, area and volume when four different presentations of the problem were given: standard textbook problems, word problems, students measuring, and problems labeled differently than the standard textbook problems. Each of the 235 subjects took one of four different measurement skills testes developed by the researcher. Results indicate student achievement decreases as the complexity of the attribute increases. Overall, students found standard textbook problems the easiest to solve, followed by word problems, and students measuring, respectively. Problems labeled differently than the standard textbook problem were the most difficult for …

Estimational Abilities And Mathematics Achievement Of Seventh Graders, Mary Elizabeth Mendenhall Jan 1987

Estimational Abilities And Mathematics Achievement Of Seventh Graders, Mary Elizabeth Mendenhall

Theses and Dissertations

Computational estimation and mental computation are two of the most neglected areas of today's mathematical curriculum. Much has been written about these two concepts, but little instruction has been carried out in the classroom (Johnson, 1979; Reys, 1986). Freeman (cited in Reys & Bestgen, 1981) states that less than 3% of textbooks had estimation lessons. Reys (1987) found that only 4% of lessons in all fourth-grade textbooks of the early 1980's deal with estimation. Also, Buchanan (1978, p. 2) observes that: "Instruction in. estimation is not something that has been tried and failed; it has not been tried on any …

The Relationship Between The Strategies Of Adolescents On Microcomputers In Problem-Solving Sessions And Problem-Solving Times, Linda Meeks Jan 1987

The Relationship Between The Strategies Of Adolescents On Microcomputers In Problem-Solving Sessions And Problem-Solving Times, Linda Meeks

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between strategies used by students in problem solving and the amount of time necessary for the problem solution.

A portion of the curriculum for 7th grade Life Science, teaching problem solving, was converted into three computer problem-solving tasks to be done by 76 seventh graders who worked in pairs to solve the problems. Each pair of students timed themselves as they worked toward a solution while the computer recorded the number of clues used in order to reach a solution. The Pearson product-moment correlation was used to obtain a coefficient …

The Effects Of Vertical Acceleration In Mathematics, Amy Willis Jan 1986

The Effects Of Vertical Acceleration In Mathematics, Amy Willis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of vertical acceleration of students who had taken algebra in the eighth grade. A questionnaire was administered to seniors to determine the attrition rates and their perceived success level in subsequent mathematics courses. All seniors in four high schools in a large school district in Georgia completed the questionnaire. Responses of those seniors who had taken algebra in the eighth grade were analyzed by examining the percentages and frequency counts. The study revealed a high attrition rate for the senior year mathematics course and perceived success levels that were not …

A Survey Of Seventh And Eighth Grade Science Curricula In Georgia. Is There A Need For Specific Objectives?, Doris P. Lord Jan 1985

A Survey Of Seventh And Eighth Grade Science Curricula In Georgia. Is There A Need For Specific Objectives?, Doris P. Lord

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the science curricula being used in Georgia in the seventh and eighth grades. This information was used to determine any inconsistencies and the need for more specific guidelines at the State level to improve any transfer problems of students. The survey responses showed no significant problem with students transferring within the state. Responses also showed that a majority of either the curriculum directors or science teachers preferred a more specific description of the State Basic Curriculum Content. The survey indicated that Life Science is taught the most often in the seventh grade …
