Mathematical Modelling: A Guidebook For Teachers And Teams, Peter Galbraith, Derek Holton

Mathematics

This document aims to provide teachers with material that will enable them to prepare students to develop skills of mathematical modelling. Mathematical modelling is a process in which real-life situations and relations in these situations are expressed by using mathematics. Included in this publication are junior modelling problems for upper primary, junior or middle secondary levels; intermediate modelling problems for junior or middle secondary levels; and senior modelling problems for middle or senior secondary levels. Engaging Students In The Practice Of Statistics Through Undergraduate Research, Debra L. Hydorn Jan 2018

Engaging Students In The Practice Of Statistics Through Undergraduate Research, Debra L. Hydorn

Mathematics

As statisticians, we engage in a variety of activities, some of which are regularly integrated into our undergraduate courses. However, the individual courses that comprise a mathematics or statistics degree program might not provide students with experiences in the broader range of activities that define the practice of statistics. To remedy this situation, faculty can consider developing and mentoring undergraduate research projects. This article briefly discusses the skills that comprise statistical practice along with some course and program options for helping students to develop these skills. Then, types of undergraduate research projects in statistics are described to help faculty generate …

Community Service-Learning In Statistics: Course Design And Assessment, Debra L. Hydorn Jan 2007

Community Service-Learning In Statistics: Course Design And Assessment, Debra L. Hydorn

Mathematics

Service-learning projects are a useful method for students to learn both the practice and value of statistical methods. Effective service learning, however, depends on several factors and can be implemented according to a variety of models. In this article, different models for incorporating service-learning in statistics courses are presented along with example statistics courses. Principles for good service-learning practice will also be presented as a means for assessing the quality of a service-learning course component.

Mathematics: A Curriculum Profile For Australian Schools, Australian Education Council Jan 1994

Mathematics: A Curriculum Profile For Australian Schools, Australian Education Council

Mathematics

A joint project of the States, Territories and the Commonwealth of Australia initiated by the Australian Education Council, this is one of a series of sixteen documents representing collaborative curriculum development in Australia across eight areas of learning. The statements provide a framework for curriculum development by education systems and schools. They are divided into strands and further structured in four bands, roughly corresponding to the stages of schooling: lower primary, upper primary, junior secondary and post-compulsory. The statements do not provide a syllabus. Rather, they provide a foundation for courses which will meet students' needs and reflect advances in …
