A small vial or test tube plugged with cotton makes a very satisfactory watering device for caged insects. A significant drawback, however, is the difficulty in preventing the tube from rolling whenever the cage is moved. Setting the tube in a lump of clay is often suggested, but the clay soon becomes quite soiled.

Six Iowa teachers were honored by the Iowa Academy of Science during the annual meeting held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids last spring. They had been nominated by either administrators or by fellow teachers and selected by committees working with the director of the Academy's Excellence in Science Teaching Awards program. This issue will spotlight the biology and chemistry recipients. In subsequent issues, the earth science and elementary science recipients and the junior high science and physics recipients will be spotlighted.

When teaching about minerals, there is no way that you can omit the topic of crystals. Usually, we either go to our mineral cases and take out examples of crystals to pass around, or we grow our own. The only problem with these methods is that both take time. With the former, we are looking at crystals "after the fact." With the latter, we lost the interest of some students because it takes too long to grow crystals from a solution.

Many of the outdoor science activities at Knoxville wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the unusual arrangement of science classes. Students in the environmental science class, which meets during the fall semester, and the field biology class, which meets in the spring, attend class twice a week for two hours straight and once on Friday for one hour. All students are required to either take one of the field classes or general chemistry, as well as a semester in human biology.

Rocky ledges jutting forth to form stony outcrops along -Iowa's streams, roadcuts and hillsides provide evidence of ancient environments entirely different from the rolling prairies of today. These rocky ledges were laid down in the bottoms of vast shallow seas which covered most of Iowa in its past history. Over great lengths of time, the waters swept back and forth, rising and subsiding, leaving a record in the layers of the earth's materials deposited in their depths. Protests have been made against the Duane Arnold Energy Center nuclear generating plant. Evolution and creationism were debated in the state legislature. In addition, arsenic and nitrates have been found in some municipal water supplies. Other technological issues, such as soil conservation and gasohol, have been making headlines. The common though highly elusive North American badger is seldom seen and often misunderstood. When badgers are encountered by man, the experience is frequently startling to both parties. Impressions based on such limited and stress-filled information are biased. For example, it is widely believed that this member of the family Mustelidae (which also includes skunks, otters and weasels) is vicious, mean and aggressive. However, personal experience with badgers gained from studies over the past 10 years indicates that, although quite capable of defending themselves, badgers are shy, secretive and good bluffers.
