Inexpensive Computer Software For Science Teaching In Iowa Schools, John B. Cook

Between January and April 1989, the author collected and compiled information on inexpensive instructional computer software to support science teaching. For each piece of software, information was collected on the topics it covered, how it could be obtained, and how much it would cost for school purchase in Iowa. The complied data was limited to inexpensive software for two reasons: (1) to keep the size of the data base manageable, and (2) to focus on software that schools can afford to obtain.

The White House has announced the 1989 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Across the country, 112 dedicated and talented junior high, middle and senior high school science and mathematics teachers were selected to receive the awards. In Iowa, the recipients were Earl Ockenga (mathematics) of Malcolm Price Laboratory School, Cedar Falls, and Floyd F. Sturtevant (science) of Ames High School, Ames.

Did you know that Iowa law requires water quality issues be taught in seventh and eighth grade science? This is a result of the 1987 Groundwater Protection Act. GREAT (Groundwater Resources & Educational Activities for Teaching) is a program for earth/life/general science in grades 7-9 that was designed to help teachers meet this requirement.

A companion to the Elementary Science Day is the annual Council for Elementary Science International "CESI Meet, Greet, Make and Take" workshop. This popular convention session provides a wide variety of activities and ideas for teaching science in the elementary classroom. The setting of this workshop is informal. Presenters station themselves around the room as the participants move freely from station to station, learning about the activities, constructing instructional materials and discussing how they might incorporate these new ideas in their teaching.

The American Physical Society (APS), in cooperation with several corporate sponsors, has made several $2500 scholarships available to minority undergraduate students studying physics. For each scholarship awarded, $2000 will be given the student, $500 the hosting college or university. Any Black, Hispanic or Native American United States citizens who plan to major in physics and who are high school seniors or college freshmen or sophomores may apply for the scholarships.

The Business Week Awards for Instructional Innovation were designed to recognize and reward innovative teachers and to foster the adaptation of successful teacher designed curricula. At least 100 teachers will receive $1,000 grants for developing exemplary projects that merit widespread dissemination.

Plans are now underway to develop a second edition of the AGI/ NSTA Earth Science Examination scheduled for release during the 1991-92 academic year. The developers of the test are asking that persons in the earth science education community provide feedback concerning the first edition of the exam (published in 1988) and submit new items for inclusion in the second edition.

The United States Geological Survey has compiled two packets of teaching aids which vary according to purpose and grade level. One, "Teacher's Packet of Geologic Materials," is available to secondary teachers of earth science (for whom the contents were selected) and to college teachers of geology. Another packet, "Selected Packet of Geologic Teaching Aids," was compiled for elementary and secondary teachers of geography, social studies, general science, environmental education and oceanography.

The activity explained in this article was developed at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics by the authors for SPICA Activities. SPICA is the acronym for the Support Program for Instructional Competency in Astronomy and is funded by the National Science Foundation. Thirty-three astronomy and science educators were selected from throughout the United States to be involved in the three-week SPICA astronomy education workshop during August 1989.

Most of us have at one time or another in our lives seen a meteor, or "shooting star," on a clear night. This phenomenon usually appears as a brief streak of light in the sky. A meteor occurs when a tiny meteoroid intercepts the Earth's atmosphere and meets a fiery destruction due to the tremendous friction it encounters.

"The locus of points such that the sum of the distances between each point and two other fixed focii is constant." This definition of the ellipse, that figure from geometry so important to the understanding planetary and stellar orbits, may be familiar, yet it often remains confusing. We find that creating an ellipse in front of a class as we discuss its features helps to clarify this mathematical definition.
