"Teaching and Learning Styles: Environmental Literacy for the '90's" will offer teachers the opportunity to spend a weekend learning new ways to meet the educational challenges presented by today's higher academic standards, economic problems and diverse student groups.

The Iowa Academy of Science strongly opposes the attempts, made in the guise of "animal rights," to abolish the use of animals as scientific research and teaching subjects. Significant success in life science research has been due, in large, to the use of experimental animals. The rationale for such use lies in the fact that their organ systems, metabolic pathways and genetics have counterparts in humans. Therefore, the information gained from such research has been of enormous value to the welfare of humans and other animals.

Success in science results from a variety of experiences and characteristics. Some come from within the individual while others are in the environment. ~ For Native American Indians, achievement in science based upon traditional Western education and national testing traditions does not reflect American Indian knowledge of science or natural events around them. Over the centuries, American Indian cultures have exhibited a closeness with nature, even to the point of considering their relationship spiritual. Rosalie Cochran was recently named one of the recipients of the Iowa Wildlife Federation's 1990 Conservation Achievement Awards. The activity explained in this article was developed at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics by the authors for SPICA Activities. SPICA is the acronym for the Support Program for Instructional Competency in Astronomy and is funded by the National Science Foundation. Thirty-three astronomy and science educators were selected from throughout the United States to be involved in the three-week SPICA astronomy education workshop during August 1989.

Iowa agriculture benefits from two important natural resources, the rich soils that blanket the landscape and sufficient precipitation, in most years, to produce large crop yields. While precipitation is essential to farmers, many of Iowa's soils, especially in the northcentral part of the state, are poorly drained and at times contain excess water that can hinder field operations or ruin crops. In these areas, farm fields are often artificially drained by buried tile lines leading to ditches or to streams. Another, but less common, method is the agricultural drainage well, a shaft which funnels excess water directly underground. The upper …
