The junior high school has been-and still is-the weakest link in the chain of science education. More interest in science is lost during these two or three years than any other period of a child's education. This is grossly unfortunate because children in this age group have the imagination, enthusiasm, and level of maturity which allows them to profit greatly from the excitement and challenge offered in a good science curriculum.

The Effect Of Thiouracil On The Thyroid Gland Of The Mouse, Patricia Patridge

The object of this research was to determine the effect of thiouracil on the thyroid gland of the mouse. The results showed that thiouracil caused a definite increase in the size of the gland and a decrease in the amount of iodine present in the gland. Since thiouracil is considered capable of preventing iodine from binding and producing the thyroxine molecule needed for the normal function of the gland, these results were as expected.

With the introduction of B.S.C.S. Biology and its intense laboratory centered approach into our school curriculum, the need for additional h e l p to check equipment and student findings during class sessions became apparent. The use of volunteer assistants proved to be helpful, not only to the instructor, but also to the student by providing him with an opportunity to be of service to the school and also to carry on supervised research work.
