Unusual Ph.D. Program Supported

Support of an unusual graduate program in science and mathematics education is provided by a National Science Foundation grant of $29,700 awarded today to the University of California at Berkeley. Known as "SESAME" (Search for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education), the recently established program leads to a Ph.D. Its aim is to offer students the opportunity to combine advanced training in one of the natural sciences or mathematics with the pursuit of central interests in science education.

J. W. Warren has written a book recently which gives a critical review of mistaken ideas which are conveyed by physics textbooks and overlooked by physics teachers. Although Warren doesn't consider the area of sound to any extent, the situation is analogous. As he points out, errors and misleading material which are published for years while books pass through several editions gravely mislead students.

The Department of the Interior's National Park Service has suspended entrance fees to park areas normally entered by automobile pending Congressional action on restoring the Golden Eagle Passport, an annual fee system which expired last March 31.

The last decade was marked by drastic changes in the studied approach to teaching science and most school subjects. A whole new vocabulary of science education terminology appeared-the process approach, conceptual schemes, Hanson integrated science, audio-tutorial techniques, the multi-media approach, computer-assisted instruction. These and many other phrases can be summed up in the one word innovation, and many educators of the more traditional bent feel a bit uneasy and perhaps defensive about the extent to which innovation is lacking in their teaching.

There is no shortage of information and misinformation about sex education; however, it is difficult to determine which information is based upon more than personal bias and experience. Educators profess to educate children in those aspects of behavioral change which are based upon the needs of the students. We so frequently use Amoeba proteus for observation and experimentation in our classes in Cell Structure and Function, and Physiological Protozoology at the University of Kansas, that it has been necessary to avoid buying the many needed cultures from any of the major biological suppliers. Consequently, we have had to devise a reasonably reliable method of our own to culture that amoeba.

An inquiry into the philosophical area of any human endeavor results in the framing of "why" questions. Why study science at all?, naturally becomes one of these questions which has great relevance to the field of science education. "How" and "what" questions generally use up most of the science educator's time and efforts. This is not an attempt to negate the importance of "how" and "what" questions (they are the stuff of science); rather, it is an attempt to determine what the case for science is in our educational process.

Communications between the various educational institutions in Iowa is and should be the primary need which is satisfied by Articulation Committee activity. A panel, composed of Paul Tweeton of the State Department of Public Instruction, Robert Franke, and Tom Hendricksen representing two-year and four-year colleges, respectively, presented various views related to better communications and other concerns of articulation. The panel discussion was designed to provide an opportunity for dissemination of information by the panel and reception of ideas and suggestions from the audience.
