Making sound visible is a useful activity in teaching students the concepts that sound is caused by vibrating objects and that different sounds are caused by different types of vibration. This particular activity makes it possible to see the sounds produced by observing a vibrating, metal plate. As the plate produces sound it vibrates violently in some areas and not at all in other regions. If a small amount of very fine sand or poppy seed is sprinkled on the plate as it vibrates, the seeds will move to areas where vibration is minimal and form distinct distributional patterns on …

Northeast Iowa is an exceptionally beautiful and unique region. Environmental education in the schools and communities of this area is a vital factor in enabling citizens to take a reasoned approach to the conservation and management of this region. Two observations precipitated the action which resulted in the project described in this paper. The first was that the local resources were vulnerable to being utilized in a potentially harmful manner and secondly, teachers did not seem to be taking full advantage of their local resources in their classroom instruction.

Cellulose is the most abundant organic material which can be used as a source of food, fuel and chemicals. The net world-wide production of cellulose is estimated at one hundred billion tons per year. This is approximately 150 lbs. of cellulose per day for each and every one of the earth's 3.9 billion people. The energy to produce this vast quantity of cellulose comes from the sun and is fixed by photosynthesis.

A Unique Elementary Science Teacher Education Program, S. Cecilia Kuennen

Within the past decade exciting new science programs have become available and have been introduced into the elementary schools. At the same time important changes are taking place in pre-service science education programs on the college level to ensure long-range success in the use of these new curricula. Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, Iowa, has successfully implemented an innovative pilot program which may well be adopted by other teacher education centers throughout the country. The strength of the program lies in the cooperative effort between the college and the elementary school system.

Most high level science careers are not pursued by women in any large proportion. Women comprise less than ten percent of American physicians, engineers, geologists, chemists, physicists, dentists, and veterinarians. On the other hand, women are over-represented in such science-related careers as nursing, dental hygiene, medical technology, physical and occupational therapy, and dietetics. Men encounter personal barriers or social pressures which make difficult their entry into "women's work." Likewise, women cannot easily pursue "men's careers." It was a real pleasure to work with the most capable staff and officers of NST A. Our district can be very proud of its representation for the past two years in the person of David L. Fagel from Marshalltown, Iowa. Dave did an outstanding job and is very much respected for his leadership. I hope that I may as ably serve District VIII.

Weather Balloons: An Interdisciplinary Unit, Eugene Brady

"When can we let them go?" "How far do you think they will go?" "I hope someone finds mine." These were typical comments from the 140 Perry second grade students who culminated their study of air with the release of 140 balloons. The idea for such an activity was an outgrowth of an assignment in the second grade reader. One of the second grade teachers suggested this project could be readily adapted to the second grade science program. In 1963 the state of West Virginia founded the National Youth Science Camp and the governor of that state invited each of the other governors to nominate two senior boys as delegates, all expenses paid by the state of West Virginia.
