This article is the first in a series discussing the wide spectrum of metric units. Metric education programs typically avoid measuring force, energy, and other physical quantities. Specialized units like the joule and pascal, however, will be appearing more and more frequently. How many Americans can confidently interpret a label rating a light bulb in lumens? This series of articles for the general reader will review the history of the metric units, the rationales behind their definitions and the fine points of their usage. Examples and exercises will relate the special units to every day experiences. This initial article will …

Acetate Peels From Iowa Carbonate Rocks, Wayne I. Anderson, Mary Hogan
Acetate Peels From Iowa Carbonate Rocks, Wayne I. Anderson, Mary Hogan
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Iowa's rock record is noted for its abundance of carbonate rocks. These carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, contain interesting textural features and an abundance of fossils. The fossils can often be removed from the rock matrix and studied. The fossils can also be studied in cut and polished slabs of rock or by making thin sections of the rock. Thin sections are prepared by cutting a thin slice from the rock and gluing the slice on a glass slide. The rock slice is then ground-down with abrasives to a thickness of .030 mm., covered with a coverslip, and studied with …

Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The world food deficit has resulted in an expanded effort to find new sources of protein. With significant research efforts directed toward development of oilseed, leaf, fish and single cell concentrates, it is surprising that insects have been almost totally overlooked. They are a natural food for many kinds of animals and they are used widely as food by some human populations, especially in the tropics where they help compensate for the general deficiency in animal proteins, fats and calories. The few biochemical studies done to date indicate that insect protein is of high quality.

Elementary Science Teaching With Little Or No Equipment, Claison Groff
Elementary Science Teaching With Little Or No Equipment, Claison Groff
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Elementary teachers seem to be ill at ease in the classroom when teaching science. Most elementary teachers tell me that they feel insecure when dealing with the laboratory aspects because they have had little training in the subject area. Most problems seem to center around activities which take time to prepare and equipment which most elementary classrooms lack or need to borrow from the Science Department. Most equipment and supplies are too expensive for any elementary curriculum to have on hand for use once or twice a year. Many elementary teachers teach strictly from the book and do not get …

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Frogs, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.

What can you get at a pet shop that will change its color and your science teaching? You can get Anolis carolinensis, a unique and interesting reptile that has become a commonplace object of study in many progressive science classrooms. Anolis carolinensis, the American chameleon is not a "true" chameleon. "True" chameleons exhibit more dramatic color changes, but children are charmed and intrigued by the behavior and color changes exhibited by this American reptile.

This is Part I of a collection of ideas designed to promote the formation of rock and mineral clubs. Such programs are appropriate for interested individuals from upper elementary grades through high school. A broad range of interests and skills are suggested to leave room for the creativity of prospective club advisors. Membership in clubs of this nature provides many opportunities for the development of interests, hobbies and careers. The desire to pursue rock and mineral studies is developed and encouraged by creating an informal setting where individuals can identify and fulfill their interests. A successful club allows its members …
