Cognitive Capacity Of Very Young Children, Jacques Mehler, Thomas G. Bever

Children between 2 years, 6 months old and 3 years, 2 months old correctly discriminate the relative number of objects in two rows; between 3 years, 2 months and 4 years, 6 months they indicate a longer row with fewer objects to have "more"; after 4 years, 6 months they again discriminate correctly. The discriminative ability of the younger children shows that the logical capacity for cognitive operations exists earlier than previously acknowledged.

Developing Physics Concepts Through The Process Of Variation, Walter J. Gohman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The present trend in the design of physics courses is to place emphasis on understanding rather than the rote memory of ideas and processes. The development of systematic approaches to direct thought patterns decreases the memory burden. The process of variation provides a universal thought pattern that can be applied in almost all phases of physics. This paper provides a brief description of some selected sample applications. It is hoped that these will illustrate the scope and the merit of this approach.

The purpose of this paper is to acquaint researchers and biology teachers with hatchability problems and incubation techniques. While the discussion is primarily devoted to the incubation and hatching of chicken embryos, most of the points will be applicable to other avian species.

The purpose of this investigation is to examine Schottky defects in alkali-halides. Although they occur in pairs, only the anion vacancies lend themselves to the trapping of electrons. Thus, this project concerns only the anion portion of the Schottky defects.

After standardized testing of high-ability science students who were participants in a National Science Foundation Summer Science Institute, there is evidence to indicate that their understanding of science intangibles is dependent upon the section of the program in which they were enrolled. The participants in the mathematics and biochemistry sections demonstrated significantly better understanding of science.
