Interdisciplinary Environmental Education Program For Teachers, James E. Murphy
Interdisciplinary Environmental Education Program For Teachers, James E. Murphy
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Environmental education offers a unique opportunity for innovative teaching because no one is around to say, "But, I always did it this way." Thus new environmental programs do not have to overcome the educational inertia of tradition which has stopped many new instructional movements dead in their tracks.

Environmental Education: No Passing Fad, Frederick P. Deluca
Environmental Education: No Passing Fad, Frederick P. Deluca
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Environmental education has received increased attention during the past four years. Most of the fifty states have formulated or are in the process of formulating a state plan for environmental education. Elementary and secondary school curricula continue to reflect increased concern and activity in environmental education. Higher education has responded with modification of traditional courses, design and implementation of new courses, and at some institutions, new degree programs in environmental studies. Interest has not been restricted to the physical and biological sciences; people in social sciences and humanities on all levels have participated and in many instances have been at …

An Association Position Statement On Programs And Budgets Of The National Science Foundation Division Of The Pre-College Education In Science, Michael R. Lerner
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
This document is a position statement, together with recommendations, from the National Science Teachers Association relative to educational programs and budgets of the National Science Foundation, particularly at pre-college levels. It is the result of noting with great concern what seems to us to be a serious, threatening decrease in financial support for such educational programs over the past three years, coupled with our firm belief that more and better science education -- not less, either in quantity or quality -- is an imperative for all children and youth in these days of growing concern about societal problems and national …

Some Criteria For Open Evaluation, John T. Wilson
Some Criteria For Open Evaluation, John T. Wilson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Most teachers have felt a faster heart beat at one time or another when their principal enters the room to "observe them teach." Both know that an evaluation report will soon be written and distributed to the district office, eventually finding its way to the board of education. The report may even affect the employment status of the teacher. The reaction of the teacher would seem to indicate "mistrust" of the evaluation. In fact, since 1965, there has been a growing mistrust of evaluation. Why? Specifically, why do teachers mistrust evaluation to the degree that they avoid it in their …

Dave Kanellis, a teacher of social studies and environmental studies at West High School in Iowa City, is what one might consider a teacher's teacher. Although Dave was born in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, he has acquired many of the characteristics of a midwesterner, one of which is a down-to-earth approach with people. This characteristic is displayed in many ways in the classroom as well.

Notes On An Iscs Visit, Vincent N. Lunetta
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In late January, 1973, I had the opportunity to work with persons in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the evaluation of their ISCS-Level I program. Some of the local innovations in Tulsa, I believe, are noteworthy enough to be brought to your attention. Included below are extracts from a letter I wrote after my visit to Mr. A. Q. Polk, Supervisor of Science in the Tulsa Public Schools. The notes cover ISCS program evaluation and thoughts relating to my school visits.
Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross
Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
"Individualized instruction? — I tried it and it didn't work!" This is the statement that is frequently heard at professional meetings and in visiting with teachers. Upon further examination, it is usually found that the individuals making the statement only tried an individualized approach for a very short period of time. The frustrations they had experienced were usually that l) most kids sat around doing nothing, 2) it was impossible to manage the paperwork in keeping track of where each student was, and 3) the time required to develop individualized units and materials just wasn't worth the reward in terms …
Secondary Science Training Program Enrichment For High School Students, Edward L. Pizzini
Secondary Science Training Program Enrichment For High School Students, Edward L. Pizzini
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
We live in an environment where the success of many educational programs are directly proportional to the amount of external funds appropriated. When federal funding for a program dries up, unfortunately, the program may come to an end. This end is in sight for many of the Secondary Science Training Programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation throughout the nation. However, at the University of Iowa, the SSTP programs are i n t he process of expanding beyond a firm foundation.

Some Reasons For Not Working Toward A Humanistic System
Some Reasons For Not Working Toward A Humanistic System
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
There is only one acceptable excuse for not changing: If you really are comfortable with what you are doing and if your students tell you they are really comfortable, then don't change. Ask your students and see how they feel. If you say you'd like to change but can't for any of the reasons above, you're copping out!
