Holography: Capturing The Third Dimension, Michael Timmons Jan 1976

Holography: Capturing The Third Dimension, Michael Timmons

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Holography, the three-dimensional recording of interference patterns on film has unlimited possibilities in the fields of science, art, technology, and media. Three types of holograms, the "flat" or plane, circular, and white light, are presently being produced successfully and inexpensively in the high school situation. The novelty of holography arouses curiosity while allowing the student to experience the application of interference phenomenon.

Amoebas That Can "Blow Your Mind", Eugene C. Bovee Jan 1976

Amoebas That Can "Blow Your Mind", Eugene C. Bovee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Until the mid-1950's it was assumed by biologists and physicians that the only amoeba that endangered human comfort is the one that infects the digestive tract, causing amoebic dysentery in the susceptible and unwary tourist exposed to its more virulent varieties. Although that one, known to biologists as Entamoeba histolytica, sometimes escapes to the other parts of the body to cause sores and disturbances, it rarely causes death of its host, being a generally "well-behaved" parasite.

In This Corner: Career Education, Steven K. Halstead Jan 1976

In This Corner: Career Education, Steven K. Halstead

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Often science educators feel that career education belongs in the Industrial Arts or Vocational Agriculture or Home Economics classroom but not in the Science classroom. Since Sputnik, science educators have been selling their course offerings by talking about the vast technological society in which we live and how the job market needs scientifically literate workers. Too often, however, these same educators view career education only as the production of pre-professional scientists. They seem not to include nurses, laboratory technicians and other applied fields in science vocations.

Puzzles And Piaget, David Mccalley Jan 1976

Puzzles And Piaget, David Mccalley

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Personal experience has shown that student learning problems may often be analyzed intuitively and effectively through personal interviews. However, recent work by Anton Lawson and his colleagues at the University of California at Berkeley has produced a more analytical tool, based on Piagetian Reasoning Theory, to help educators understand how students operate men tally. This tool consists of a series of specially designed puzzles, the response to which, gives clues to understanding the functional basis for students' thought processes.

Career Opportunities Await Qualified Students, Gerald H. Krockover Jan 1976

Career Opportunities Await Qualified Students, Gerald H. Krockover

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Even though we like to equate a college education with a good job, we are finding that while this was once true, it is not true for the graduates of the mid l 970's. In 1973, for example, 18 percent of the graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences at one Big Ten university who did not go on to graduate school were still unemployed six months after graduation and almost as many were working as secretaries, clerks, laborers, factory workers, and janitors. Ten years ago fewer than 500,000 bachelor's degrees were awarded in the United States and there …

A Brief Look At Individualized Instruction, James L. Kelly Jan 1976

A Brief Look At Individualized Instruction, James L. Kelly

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

If one examines the terminology that is a part of education today, it becomes evident that the teacher is responsible for more than factual presentations. Accountability, humanism, credibility, and personalization are just a few of the new terms being applied to the teachers working vocabulary. All teachers, including science teachers, are constantly being asked to meet the needs of all their students, not just a selected few. This is especially true now, since nationwide science class enrollments are declining. Individualized instruction is a part of the new terminology and, in a limited amount of space, it is also the topic …

Migration of birds in the spring and fall is a well known phenomenon. However, migration of insects is not as well known except for a few spectacular examples such as that of the Monarch butterfly. Actually, quite a number of insects migrate and one easily observed migrant is the large Green Darner dragonfly (Anax junius).

In Defense Of Ambiguity, Eugene C. Bovee Jan 1976

In Defense Of Ambiguity, Eugene C. Bovee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

If I recall correctly, one of the first adjectives I learned as a freshman in college was ambiguous. I do not remember looking it up in any dictionary when I learned it after the first mid-term tests. It was then enough for me to learn that if a professor's test-questions were deemed "ambiguous," I could excuse my failure to answer test-questions accurately and blame the professor for having hidden from me what I should have learned and understood. In my years since, as a professor, I find that the freshmen and upper classmen and even graduate students are still sophomoric …
