Instructional Outcomes Change With Sts, Robert E. Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Ideas and approaches central to Science/Technology/Society (STS) have been introduced via the Chautauqua program in classrooms of nearly 1,000 Iowa teachers of grades 4 through 9 since 1985-86. Assessment of the results of STS instruction has been central to the effort supported by the National Science Teachers Association, the Iowa Utility Association, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of Iowa. Some of the emerging results demonstrate the advantages of an STS focus for school science.

A Survey Of The Benthic Macroinvertebrates Of The Big Spring Basin, Iowa, Jack O. Kennedy, John G. Miller Iii Jan 1990

A Survey Of The Benthic Macroinvertebrates Of The Big Spring Basin, Iowa, Jack O. Kennedy, John G. Miller Iii

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected in the Big Spring Basin, located in northeastern Iowa, from May through October 1988. The purpose of the study was to develop baseline information on the benthic organisms present in the basin. A total of 167 taxa including seven species of leeches, five genera of snails, three genera of clams, one crayfish genus and over 150 taxa of aquatic insects were identified with the majority of the organisms having been reported in Iowa previously. Benthic organisms not usually encountered in Iowa include the planarian, Cura formanii; the isopod, Lirceus; the beedes, Enrxhrus, Hydrophilus, and llybius; the …

Climate Trends In Iowa, Richard E. Carlson Jan 1990

Climate Trends In Iowa, Richard E. Carlson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Long-term trends for various weather elements are presented for the period 1900-1988. Summer and winter season, and annual air temperature patterns are statistically weak because of large inrerannual variability, but trends are evident. There was a general warming from 1900 until the 40's, with a leveling or slight cooling following. Since the mid-70's, a warming trend seems to be taking place, but this cannot be confirmed. Spring season air temperatures showed no trend except that the most recent 4 years (1985-1988) were decidedly warmer than normal. Winter season air temperatures showed a change in trend in the 30's, but the …

Computed Normal Range Of Iowa Statewide July Precipitation, H. C. Vaughan, D. S. Sheets, G. R. White Jan 1990

Computed Normal Range Of Iowa Statewide July Precipitation, H. C. Vaughan, D. S. Sheets, G. R. White

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa summer rainfall distributions are examined to identify small-scale anomalies. Examination of extremely wet and dry summer months shows that large rain amounts fall mainly in small, cellular areas for both extremely wet and dry months. These configurations result from individual rainfall events. Analysis of the distribution of mean July rainfall across the state reveals significant anomalous wet and dry regions that contrast with the background, east-west rainfall gradient. Because of the skewed nature of summer rainfall distributions, the median value is used to represent a more realistic expected rainfall amount for any given year. Some parts of the stare …

Tell-Tail Adaptations For Respiration And Rapid Escape In A Freshwater Oligochaete (Lumbriculus Variegatus Mull.), Charles D. Drewes Jan 1990

Tell-Tail Adaptations For Respiration And Rapid Escape In A Freshwater Oligochaete (Lumbriculus Variegatus Mull.), Charles D. Drewes

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The aquatic oligochaete, Lumbrimlus variegatus (Order Lumbriculida; Family Lumbriculidae), utilizes a combination of postural and anatomical specializations that enhance gas exchange across the dorsal surface of posterior segments as these segments lay exposed at the air-water interface. Predator avoidance by exposed posterior segments is enhanced by neurobehavioral mechanisms involving a well-developed lateral giant nerve fiber system that mediates rapid escape withdrawal of the worm's tail in response to shadow or mechanosensory stimuli.

Time To Metamorphosis As A Function Of Larval Size In A Population Of Ambystoma Tigrinum Salamanders Consisting Of Cannibal And Typical Morph Phenotypes, Michael J. Lannoo, Michael P. Sweet, Nancy M. Ladehoff, Edmund S. Fangman, William B. Collins Jan 1990

Time To Metamorphosis As A Function Of Larval Size In A Population Of Ambystoma Tigrinum Salamanders Consisting Of Cannibal And Typical Morph Phenotypes, Michael J. Lannoo, Michael P. Sweet, Nancy M. Ladehoff, Edmund S. Fangman, William B. Collins

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Salamander larvae of the species Ambystoma tigrinum are dimorphic in northwestern Iowa. In addition to common typical morphs, there exist rare, specialized cannibal morphs, which are induced environmentally by crowding. Cannibal morph phenotypes are characterized morphologically by their large size, proportionately large heads and hypertrophied vomerine teeth, and behaviorally by facultative cannibalism. During metamorphosis amphibians are particularly sensitive to predation. To help understand why cannibal morphs are uncommon, we have raised cannibal and typical morphs in isolation and under crowded conditions to compare the timing and duration of metamorphosis between these morphs. Results show that larger larvae, most of which …

Notes on some physico-chemical parameters of the habitat and on the ecology of the taxa are included.

An Interpretation Of Hustedt's Terms "Schattenlinie", "Perlenreihe" And "Hocker" Using Specimens Of The Cyclotella Radiosa-Complex, C. Distinguenda, Hust., And C. Cyclopuncta Nov. Sp., Hannelore Hakansson, John R. Carter Jan 1990

Carter

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

With the help of light- and scanning electron micrographs HUSTEDT'S terms "Schattenlinie", "Perlenrcihe", and "Hocker" are explained using specimens in the Cydotella radiosa complex, and C. distinguenda HUST. The complicated history of C. operculata (AG.) KUTZ., published elsewhere, has shown that C. distinguenda HUST. is the correct name to be used for this taxon. In this connection the new nomenclatural combination C. distinguenda var. unipunctata nov. comb. is proposed.

Morphological differences are discussed and the possibility of different "unipunctata" species is shown. Distinct morphological features found indicate the necessiry to describe a new species: C. cyclopuncta nov. sp. rather than …

The Mating Systems And Pollination Biology Of Three Species Of Verbena (Verbenaceae), Robert W. Cruden, Kristina K. Baker, Thomas E. Cullinan, Karen A. Disbrow, Kelly L. Douglas, John D. Erb, Kenneth J. Kirsten, Mary L. Malik, Elizabeth A. Turner, Jonathon A. Weier, Sherry R. Wilmot

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Because their flowers can be cross- and/or self-pollinated Verbena stricta, V hastata and V urticifolia are facultatively xenogamous. We suggest the flowers can be cross-pollinated because I) the fruit set of caged plants was substantially lower than that of open-pollinated plants, i.e. pollinators were necessary for typical fruit set and 2) the flowers of each species attracted a diverse array of hymenopteran, dipteran and lepidopteran pollinators that were capable of moving pollen between plants. Self-pollination was low due to the spatial separation of anthers and stigmas and/or an angled corolla that decreased the likelihood of pollen dropping from the anthers …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The course, "Developmental Biology of Selected Invertebrates'', has been offered in alternate years at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory (Ill) on Lake West Okoboji, Dickinson County, Iowa, since the first summer session of 1983. This course has taken advantage of the great diversity of invertebrates found in the Ill area and has demonstrated to students and faculty alike the exciting phenomena and principles of developmental biology. The course is continuously evolving as new experiments and observations are discovered with each offering of the course.

Changes In A Prairie Bird Population From 1940 To 1989, Neil P. Bernstein, Kristine K. Baker, Sherry R. Wilmot Jan 1990

Changes In A Prairie Bird Population From 1940 To 1989, Neil P. Bernstein, Kristine K. Baker, Sherry R. Wilmot

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We repeated a bird census of a prairie/field community that was done by Kendeigh (1941) in 1940. Changes in the bird populations were compared with changes in vegetation, agricultural land use for the county, and trends in urbanization. Grassland birds did decline in abundance due to causes similar to those cited in other studies. The increase in forest and edge nesting species was more unusual to this study, and probably correlated with the woody succession that had occurred.

Here are two brief demonstrations that I find useful in teaching planetary astronomy. The latter was inspired by a segment on the Nova series of public television programs, which is always a source of ideas for visually presenting science.

Astronomy Resources, Thomas Hockey Jan 1990

Astronomy Resources, Thomas Hockey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The concept of orbiting bodies is complicated by the fact that no real system exists--be it satellite and planet, planet and sun, of binary stars--in which one object revolves around the center of the other. Rather, both bodies revolve about a common center of mass. The idea of center of mass enters into discussions of dynamics throughout an astronomy course or unit, beginning with the motions of the Solar System and recurring in analyses of stellar systems and of galaxies

Astronomy Resources, Thomas Hockey Jan 1990

Astronomy Resources, Thomas Hockey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Understanding why an orbiting satellite neither travels in a straight line away from the body about which it is revolving, nor falls inward toward it, is an important concept in both astronomy and physics. Demonstrating an orbit in a classroom is made difficult by the Earth's gravity. The Earth's gravity can be used, along with simple kitchenware, to create a model of a planetary or satellite orbit.

The Effects Of Prisms Learning Cycle Strategies On Achievement, Integrated Process Skills, And Attitudes Towards Physics Of High School Physics Students When Referenced To Kolb’S Learning Style Inventory, Michael P. Kelly

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study asked the question: Is the gain in physics achievement, process skills, and attitudes toward physics, using the PRISMS teaching strategy, different among high school physics students in the four cognitive learning modes identified by the Kolb Learning Styles Inventory (LSI)? In this study a group of high school physics students were tested for gains in scores in the three areas mentioned in the statement of the problem. This treatment group was taught using PRISMS teaching strategies. Their learning styles were classified according to the Kolb LSI. The procedure followed for this study included administration of the Kolb LSI …

Undergraduate Elementary Education Students’ Understanding Of The Particulate Nature Of Matter, Pushpa Pandey Jan 1990

Undergraduate Elementary Education Students’ Understanding Of The Particulate Nature Of Matter, Pushpa Pandey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was descriptive in nature and investigated preservice elementary teachers' understanding of the particulate nature of matter. Twenty-two sophomore elementary education majors were interviewed using the interview-about-events technique. Students were asked to observe and offer explanations for some common physical and chemical changes such as melting, evaporating, condensing, dissolving, and burning. Next, the students' model of matter was probed and they were asked to provide a description of each event using their conceptual model. The results indicated that the majority of students (82%) accepted that matter is made of particles. However, only 56% of these students believed that particles …
