Hot-Packaging Reduces Lipid Oxidation And Improves Sensory Characteristics Of Cooked Turkey Meat, Maiko Ishikawa, Dong U. Ahn

The effects of two vacuum packaging methods (hot and cold vacuum packaging) on the storage stability and sensory characteristics of cooked meat were compared. Ground turkey breast and leg meat patties were cooked, vacuum packaged appropriately, and stored up to 22 days. Lipid oxidation was measured by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test. In addition, Total aerobic count and sensory evaluation (flavor, juiciness, tenderness, overall acceptability) were conducted. There was no significant difference in aerobic plate count by packaging methods; however, panelist rating revealed that hot-packaged turkey leg meat had higher juiciness and overall acceptability scores than cold-packaged ones. Helminth Ova Recovered From Raptors Admitted For Rehabilitation, Shawn Hawks, Rick Klann

Fecal samples from 34 raptors admitted for rehabilitation were examined for helminth ova. All 34 birds, representing 13 different species, passed helminth ova in their feces. Six different types of helminth ova were identified, including strigeid trematode, cestode, Capillaria, Porrocaecum, Ascaridia and spiurid nematode. From this study, it appears that helminths, particularly tapeworms, are common parasites of raptors.

The Contributions Of J. A. Udden To An Understanding Of Iowa Geology, Richard C. Anderson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Johan August Udden served on the faculty of Augustana College from 1888 until 1911. His research during that time was directed toward an understanding of the geology of areas close at hand, the region around Rock Island and nearby areas in Iowa and Illinois. Udden's most significant contributions to Iowa geology were in his treatment of 1) Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary stratigraphy; 2) subsurface geology, including information on bedrock elevations and topography; 3) characteristics and origin of the loess. Most of this information was included in the Annual Reports of the Iowa Geological Survey published between 1899 and 1903. He …

Calculators have been a part of mathematics for years. More recently, the graphing calculator has been widely accepted as a mathematical tool. The Tl-92 has the capability to take this technology integration a step further. It has been described as having "the power of a computer with the independence of a graphing calculator." With the geometry package and the symbolic manipulation unique to the Tl-92, the question becomes, how should this technology be coordinated with the existing curricula in high school classrooms to make the learning and teaching of mathematics as exciting and relevant as possible?

The nature of an undergraduate, nonmajors biology laboratory was investigated in this study. Student participants were enrolled in a general education biology laboratory course at the University of Northern Iowa. The researcher's purpose was to gain a characterization of the instructional format and laboratory activities experienced by students.

Interpretation of student and instructor responses enabled an insider's view of the biology laboratory. The laboratory period was consistently described by both students and instructors as having three parts, Beginning, Middle, and End, with the End being of special importance for conceptual development. Nesting Status Of The Cooper's Hawk In Iowa: 1988-1996, David. J. Conrads

The Cooper's Hawk was once considered a common nesting species in Iowa. Organochlorine pesticides and their residues, along with habitat loss contributed to its decline throughout the Midwest after the 1940's. This species was classified as endangered in Iowa in 1984, but recent trends in nests found indicate that the population of these hawks has increased. Since April 1988, 53 nests have been discovered in Iowa. Due to the apparent population growth, this species was removed from Iowa's endangered species list in 1994.

This literature review examines the research that was available about the trends and the status of gender differences in science. The major factors identified by researchers and educators that contribute to this gender difference are discussed. Suggestions are presented which may minimize the gender differences and provide specific practices that can help improve the situation. The results of this review indicate that although a difference exists, there are ways that educators, parents, and students can make changes to decrease the difference.

The perceived effect on student learning provided by interactive technology in the biological sciences has been studied on a small, private, two-year college campus. The first portion of the study was the perceived effectiveness of interactive video when used for class presentations for biological science majors. The second portion of the study evaluated five campus-produced interactive laserdisc tutorials designed for individual and group use for students taking a general introductory biology lab course.

A Relationship Between River Modification And Species Richness Of Freshwater Turtles In Iowa, Terry J. Vandewalle, James L. Christiansen

Comparisons were made of turtle populations in Red Rock Reservoir and the major rivers of the Mississippi River and Missouri River damage systems in Iowa. Of the inland rivers of the Mississippi drainage examined in this study, the Des Moines River had the least amount of remaining turtle habitat. Number of turtle species ranged from five in the Des Moines River to 11 in the Mississippi River, but only three species were found in Red Rock Reservoir. Pathogenicity Of Septoria Aquilina Isolated From Black Hills Bracken, A. Gabel, C. Salazar

Septoria aquilina, a pathogenic fungus isolated from Pteridium aquilinum growing in the Black Hills was studied from 1991-1995. S. aquilina sprayed at 8,000 conidia/ml on transplanted fronds followed by high humidity caused severe necrosis seven days after inoculation and disease severity increased until fronds died. Severe necrosis also developed from inoculations at 4,000 and 2,000 conidia/ml. Less severe symptoms developed from inoculations at 1,000 conidia/ml. Inoculations at 4,000 conidia/ml not followed by high humidity caused less necrosis than inoculations at the same concentration with high humidity. Inoculations at 4,000, 2,000, and 1,000 conidia/ml on fronds grown from spores caused similar …

A Potential Understory Flora For Oak Savanna In Iowa, Karl T. Delong, Craig Hooper

Oak savanna occurred in Iowa until the time of settlement and then was degraded rapidly. There were no scientific studies of savanna prior to, or after, settlement, and now no high-quality examples exist within the state. To identify those vascular plants adapted to live in the understory of savanna we examined regional and local flora for species that occurred in both prairie and broken woodland, and for species that occurred m both openings and forest. We then compiled a detailed description of the ecological range of habitats for each of these species. We identified 252 species (39 graminoids, 183 forbs, …

Published and unpublished accounts of the plains pocket mouse (Perognathus flavescens) were utilized to document the existence of extant populations and to summarize and report additional data about the biology of this state endangered Iowa species. Populations of P. flavescens exist in western (Harrison, Monona, and Plymouth counties) and extreme eastern (adjacent portions of Louisa and Muscatine counties) Iowa, the latter of which represents the eastern-most record for the species in North America. In addition, we document a new locality for P. flavescens from the interior of the state (Benton County). All known populations of P. flavescens in Iowa occur …

Spiders were collected by the author from various habitats in 16 counties of northwestern Iowa and the loess hills of western Iowa during the summers of 1985 and 1990-1992. Additional donated specimens from the same region in 1981and1989 were identified by the author. Twenty-three families, 92 genera and 184 species have been identified.

Geochemistry Of Buried Midcontinent Rift Volcanic Rocks In Iowa: Data From Well Samples, Karl E. Seifert, Raymond R. Anderson

We analyzed welt cores and cuttings from deep wells into Precambrian igneous rocks from five separate pacts of the buried Midcontinent Rife System in Iowa for major and trace elements. A total of 21 samples, 9 cores and 12 cuttings, were analyzed for trace elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and 11 of these, 9 cores and 2 cuttings, were analyzed for major elements by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis.

A distinguished psychologist once wrote that if you wished to understand the history of scientific thought you need a psychologist at your elbow. Lewis Wolpert, Professor of Biology at University College in London, has taken that sentiment further. It seems that if you wish to understand the difference between scientific and nonscientific thinking you should delve deeply into the literature of cognitive psychology. For natural thinking, "ordinary, day-to-day common sense will never give an understanding about the nature of science." Instead, the trained scientist engages in unnatural (i.e., counterintuitive) thinking about a word that defies ordinary experience. In order to …
