A Comparative Study Of Wood Pulp From The Trunk, Limbs, And Roots Of The Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides), John Vernanth, Raynell Walker, Ann Johnson

A three part study was conducted on a single quaking aspen tree (Populus tremuloides): ( l) the strength and other physical properties of fiberboard made from the trunk, roots, and limbs using the cold soda pulping process, (2) the strength properties of paper made from the trunk, root, and limb sections using the Kraft pulping process, and (3) a chemical analysis of the trunk, roots, and limbs. Results of these studies indicate there are significant differences in many of the properties of the three parts of the tree, and that parts of the tree other than the trunk possess useful …

It was the purpose of this study (1) to present a method of teaching principles of heredity at a level understandable to students of a high school biology class, (2) to present a list of resource materials for use in a heredity unit, and (3) to show how the use of live animals might intensify student interest in this subject as well as in other phases of bird life such as nest building, incubation of eggs, hatching of eggs, voice and communication, and effects of nutrition on chick development.

In discussing the basis for teaching high school biology, Van Deventer¹ states, "...the present typical course in high school biology serves adequately neither the terminal student nor the college entrance student." He holds that today's courses present watered-down versions of college courses to the student before the intelligence of the student has matured enough to grasp such subject matter. Biology teachers in the smaller high schools are often confronted with the problem of securing sufficient classroom teaching material: charts, specimens, and reference books. A relatively inexpensive method of obtaining resource material would prove valuable to teachers confronted with this problem. Granting that actual study of specimens is of greater value than indirect methods, it is often helpful to have a supply of supplementary visual aids.
