A Field Based Approach To Introductory Geology Instruction, G. R. Woodwell, J. L. Hayob
A Field Based Approach To Introductory Geology Instruction, G. R. Woodwell, J. L. Hayob
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
As part of the NSF-funded VCEPT project, geology faculty at Mary Washington College have developed and pilot tested a two-semester sequence of geology courses which are taught in a non-traditional, discovery oriented style. The guiding philosophy of the course development is to ensure that students learn about geological principles through collaborative learning in a variety of field settings that were carefully chosen to provide good examples of a range of geologic processes and environments. The design goals of these courses include improvement in student retention of concepts, increased student interest in earth science, improved critical thinking skills and the promotion …
An Investigative Approach To Teaching Mathematics: Excitement And Concerns Of K-8 Preservice Teachers, J. L. M. Wilkins
An Investigative Approach To Teaching Mathematics: Excitement And Concerns Of K-8 Preservice Teachers, J. L. M. Wilkins
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Following from the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, an Investigative Approach (IA) to teaching mathematics encourages students to explore real-world problems through hands-on activities instead of focusing on rote memorization of facts, formulas, and procedures. This paper discusses thirty-two K-8 preservice teachers‘ responses to questions regarding excitements and concerns about using this method of teaching. Although most preservice teachers are excited about the prospects of using this approach in their future classrooms, some exhibit hesitations related to concerns about time constraints and their own math abilities. A mathematics methods course presently being taught that is centered …
Demonstrations For Children Of All Age- The Cork Canon, S. Thornton
Demonstrations For Children Of All Age- The Cork Canon, S. Thornton
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Demonstrations are one of the most useful techniques for teaching science to anyone, regardless of age. Demonstrations attract attention and normally make the observer want to learn more about what is happening. This paper reports on The Cork Cannon, one of the favorite demonstrations done in the demonstration road show, Phun Physics, that travels to schools within about 60 miles of Charlottesville. The Department of Physics and the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education sponsor this demonstration show, which was seen by about 8000 persons during the last school year. Although quite simple, the Cork Cannon demonstration is rich …

This article describes the project, A Summer Academy Program for Prospective Teachers: Model Teaching Experiences, of the Oklahoma Teacher Education Collaborative (O-TEC), one of the nation’s Collaboratives for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (CETP). To recruit highly qualified teachers in science and mathematics, O-TEC institutions promote a program of summer academies that provide prospective teachers with opportunities to become familiar with effective teaching methods. During the academy, high school juniors and seniors explore inquiry-based teaching strategies, exemplary curricula, science and math content, and state and national standards in math and science education-all under the tutelage of mentor teachers, a Master-Teacher-in- Residence, …
Educational Research Abstracts, G. Bass Jr.
Educational Research Abstracts, G. Bass Jr.
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Editors' Note: As noted in previous issues of the Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations, the purpose of this Educational Research Abstract section is to present current published research on issues relevant to math and science teaching at both the K-12 and college levels. Because educational research articles are published in so many different academic journals, it is a rare public school teacher or college professor who reads all the recent published reports on a particular instructional technique or curricular advancement. Indeed, the uniqueness of various pedagogical strategies has been tacitly acknowledged by the creation of individual journals dedicated …

The Internet And The Truth About Science: We Gave A Science War But Nobody Came, George Meadows, Aimee Howley
The Internet And The Truth About Science: We Gave A Science War But Nobody Came, George Meadows, Aimee Howley
Education Faculty Articles
Even though sophisticated discussion of the nature of scientific claims is taking place in the academy, public school teachers of science and mathematics may harbor naïve assumptions about the way that scientific processes function to construct the "truth" Reluctant to change their prior assumptions about science, such teachers may become vulnerable to information technologies (including "low-tech" media such as textbooks and films) that construe science as a collection of facts. An on-line lesson about constructivism provided a forum in which a group of teachers revealed well-established epistemologies seemingly inimical to the principles of conceptual change teaching. Further, the strategies used …

Pre-Education Programs: A Comprehensive Project At Henry Ford Community College, D. Zopf, L. Smyrski
Pre-Education Programs: A Comprehensive Project At Henry Ford Community College, D. Zopf, L. Smyrski
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) in Dearbom, Michigan is a two-year institution of higher education serving a diverse student population of approximately 13,000 students. In addition to providing a broad array of technical and vocational programs, the College provides the first two years of a baccalaureate program. However, the transferability of these programs is not assured. In the absence of a mandated state-wide curriculum, two- and four-year colleges and universities in Michigan develop courses and programs independently, and the transfer of courses between institutions is determined independently by the respective departments. The end result is often loss of credit when …
Learning To Understand: Mathematical Preparation Of Prospective Teachers, M. Hannigan, V. Preston
Learning To Understand: Mathematical Preparation Of Prospective Teachers, M. Hannigan, V. Preston
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This paper describes the development of a two-course sequence in mathematics content for prospective elementary teachers. Community college and university personnel collaborated to develop a course sequence that would prepare prospective elementary teachers to teach mathematics with an understanding of concepts to support their abstract mathematical knowledge. The strategy was to begin with a broad vision and then focus on the smaller pieces which would achieve that vision. The course changes are validated by documents published by various educational and mathematical groups advocating an increased emphasis on teaching for understanding rather than rote learning. Significant change is difficult without support …
