The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between strategies used by students in problem solving and the amount of time necessary for the problem solution.

A portion of the curriculum for 7th grade Life Science, teaching problem solving, was converted into three computer problem-solving tasks to be done by 76 seventh graders who worked in pairs to solve the problems. Each pair of students timed themselves as they worked toward a solution while the computer recorded the number of clues used in order to reach a solution. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of vertical acceleration of students who had taken algebra in the eighth grade. A questionnaire was administered to seniors to determine the attrition rates and their perceived success level in subsequent mathematics courses. All seniors in four high schools in a large school district in Georgia completed the questionnaire. Responses of those seniors who had taken algebra in the eighth grade were analyzed by examining the percentages and frequency counts. The problem investigated was the degree of incongruence between the perceptions of nursing education administrators and nursing service administrators in regard to the educational preparation and employment practices for technical and professional nurses which has contributed to discontent in the profession. The population studied was nursing education administrators in AD and BSN programs and nursing service administrators in general acute care hospitals in West Virginia. The research method was a descriptive survey using a mailed questionnaire developed by a researcher. Eighteen (100%) of the nursing education administrators and sixty (89.6%) of the nursing service administrators responded.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the science curricula being used in Georgia in the seventh and eighth grades. This information was used to determine any inconsistencies and the need for more specific guidelines at the State level to improve any transfer problems of students. The survey responses showed no significant problem with students transferring within the state. Responses also showed that a majority of either the curriculum directors or science teachers preferred a more specific description of the State Basic Curriculum Content. Two groups of Title I Math teachers, one representing school systems which reported second and third grade student achievement gains of one year or more on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills for 1978-79, and one group which reported gains of less than eight months, were surveyed in an effort to identify which methods of presentation and types of materials apparently contributed to the most successful Title I Math programs, in terms of student achievement gains.

Two competency exams (Test A and Test B) were constructed and field tested on high school students in the Hoquiam School District. Individual results were compared to respective Stanford Achievement Test scores. Statistical analyses were performed to investigate population differences. Results from Test A were compared to results from Test B. Also, differences between performances of juniors and seniors were analyzed. A further statistical analysis was performed to compare performances between boys and girls.

Before deciding whether to continue or expand the program, it was necessary to devise a method of evaluating the program's effectiveness. In the process of this evaluation, two separate com­parisons were made:

This paper presents the effects of a token system used in a regular eighth grade mathematics class. Two classes containing 21 and 23 students were implemented. The study was designed to increase attendance, behavior, and mathematical achievement in a test group and measure the effects against a control group. The scores revealed a significant difference only in attendance favoring the test group.

Recommendations included pairing stronger reinforcers with the points used and suggestions for future research.

During Fall Quarter, 1970, 339 students enrolled in life science taught by the audio-tutorial method and 492 students in life science by the traditional method at Eastern Illinois University. This total population was compared with respect to achievement as measured by grades. A sample of 175 students was drawn from the population. The 76 audio-tutorial students were compared with the 99 students from traditional sections with respect to achievement as measured by grades earned, retention of material, and predicted grade point average.

Massive Federal expenditures for science research and development have been commonplace since World War II and the spectacular technical success of the Manhattan project. Shortly after the war the case for continued government support of basic science research was made by Vannevar Bush (1945) and others; the major organization which grew out of this Federal concern was the National Science Foundation. Subsequently the late fifties (and the voyage of Sputnik) saw science education become a national priority. That period spawned a wide array of measures in support of science education, e.g., the National Defense Education Act.
