The Failure Of The Foster Care System, Victor Machado Berrios
The Failure Of The Foster Care System, Victor Machado Berrios
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
On paper, the foster care system is a very noble concept. It is a place where unlucky children can lead better lives than what they had before being taken in. Too bad that is not the case. Involvement in the foster care system often results in children with mental health issues, trauma from abusive foster placements, and no support system in place once they age out of the system. For the sake of these kids, it is important that the government increases its funding for foster care as soon as possible.

Evidence-Based Practices In Mentoring For Leadership Development, Lindsay J. Hastings, Hannah Sunderman
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Effective mentoring for leadership development requires nuanced practical considerations. The authors outline aspects of effective mentorship, highlight considerations for practitioners and mentoring programs, and offer critical perspectives on mentoring.
Higher education scholars have identified mentoring as an important tool in leadership development (Campbell, Smith, Dugan, & Komives, 2012; Dugan & Komives, 2010; Hastings, Griesen, Hoover, Creswell, & Dlugosh, 2015; Komives, Longerbeam, Mainella, Osteen, & Owen, 2009).Mentoring is recognized as one of the most promising practices for both leader and leadership development because of its effectiveness at facilitating development (Day, 2001). Mentoring embeds leadership development within the ongoing experiences of a …

The Blind Spots: The Importance Of Measuring Non-Academic Indicators That Are Critical To Producing Positive Outcomes Specifically For Youth Who Are Living In Adverse Conditions, Orrin White
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
The study explores the impact of measuring non-academic indicators to establish and promote positive secondary and post-secondary outcomes, specifically for youth living in adverse conditions. In pursuit of this objective, the sixth grade population attending a traditional public middle school in Wilmington, Delaware completed the Search Institute’s Developmental Asset Profile (DAP), a self-report survey designed to understand the strengths and supports young people have in their lives. The assessment of the secondary data was the result of already existing programming and evaluation initiatives by the United Way of Delaware. The analyses show that participants perceptions of self, family, and community …

How Adult Learners Participate In Collaborative Learning Within A University Environment, Dennis Keechul Awen
How Adult Learners Participate In Collaborative Learning Within A University Environment, Dennis Keechul Awen
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Innovation and creativity are the “competitive edges” needed for businesses, government agencies, universities, communities, and private individuals to “stay and feel alive” and compete in our global world. Collaborative learning allows the birth of new kinds of thinking and new perspectives. Regardless of age, gender, race, and academic background, innovation and creativity through collaborative learning allows any individual, group, and organization to “jump start their batteries” and create something new. For this research study, I discovered what collaborative learning is, how it works, and what allows collaborative learning to occur.
In this qualitative study, I explored how a group of …
An Examination Of Factors That Impact The Choices Of Female Athletes In Pursuit Of A Career In Collegiate Sports Leadership, Gloria Lynn Bradley
An Examination Of Factors That Impact The Choices Of Female Athletes In Pursuit Of A Career In Collegiate Sports Leadership, Gloria Lynn Bradley
Wayne State University Dissertations
Abstract
The Social Cognitive Career Theory was applied to examine how the desire to coach or administrate are impacted by self-efficacy, occupational valence, perceived hindrance, and role model influence. This study was conducted to address the underrepresentation of females in collegiate sports leadership positions. The study examined if being coached by males or if males in leadership positions is preferred. Women coach less than half, (40.2%) of women’s sports and women account for 19.6% percent of administrators in college athletic departments. Hypothetically, the results of this study will support and enhance the NCAA college sports model by revealing quantitative data …

Women Living History: An Exploration Of Transformational Learning In A Living History Group, Amanda Silva, Joseph Polizzi
Women Living History: An Exploration Of Transformational Learning In A Living History Group, Amanda Silva, Joseph Polizzi
Education Faculty Publications
Although transformational learning has been studied in numerous contexts (English and Peters, 2012; Foote, 2015; Mezirow, 1990; Mezirow, 1997; Nohl, 2015), one area worth further exploration is the activity of living history. Living history, as defined by Anderson (1982), is essentially the simulation of life in another time. The present study focuses on a group of women in a small living history organization and how their participation in this group has changed them. Participant observation and interviews were used to determine what the women gain from their participation and to uncover some of the reasons they continue with the group. …
Creating Project-Based Math Curricula: A Narrative Inquiry, Marcie Hull
Creating Project-Based Math Curricula: A Narrative Inquiry, Marcie Hull
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
This study is a narrative inquiry about the participant’s experiences, in three individual case studies, involving teachers of high school mathematics engaged in the creation of a project-based learning curriculum, in a one-to-one laptop school. The researcher analyzed data from field notes, digital artifacts, and teacher interviews to document how math teachers are creating curriculum in an inquiry-driven, project-based, technology-infused instructional model. Findings from restorying and the analysis of three-dimensional space —regarding teacher lore —reveal themes about math teacher curriculum conflicts in skill-building, application of iterative design thinking, and structures inherent to project-based learning. Rich, thick description of the cases, …

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Without knowledge how would our brains be able to grasp the meaning of any given concept? Education is a very powerful tool that a child needs to know in order to succeed in life. Knowledge can be developed through different processes whether it be home based or in a public school setting. My research focuses on the pros and cons of both sides, and looks into what parents consider when deciding how their child is being taught. Parents should take into account their child's personal qualities, psychological and physical abilities, and their behavioral patterns to understand what would best fit …
Mass Incarceration In America, Angelica Aranda Fregoso
Mass Incarceration In America, Angelica Aranda Fregoso
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Mass incarceration is describing how the U.S. continues to incarcerate parts of its population into jails and federal prisons. This is important because it not only affects one person, but it could and will eventually affect a whole community as a whole. It has been found that single parent households, families living in poverty, and minorities have a higher possibility of being victims to mass incarceration.
Child Abuse Doesn't Just Affect Them Now, Christopher Nguyen
Child Abuse Doesn't Just Affect Them Now, Christopher Nguyen
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Child abuse has lasting effects that can lead up and into adulthood, leaving scars mentally and physically on their bodies and mind. More than six- hundred thousand cases are reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and people need to know what abuse can affect and alter a person for the rest of their life. According to McQueen multiple forms of child abuse can lead to many behavioral issues such as depression, anxiety, and disassociation in both childhood and adulthood. I believe that it is important for people to know that abuse isn't some type of punishment, …

Christian Connections, Adrian Melgoza
Christian Connections, Adrian Melgoza
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
This project explored the many different ways Christianity connects to various topics and how Christianity is doing in the modern times. The main topics included how Christianity connects to science, America, and the modern day. Research has shown that Christianity had significant impact on the early days of modern science, with many great scientists being Christian themselves. America’s foundation was heavily based on Christianity, such as laws and the society at the time. But, now that Christian influence that once was, has decreased a considerable amount and worldwide Christian persecution is at an all time high.
Struggles Of Female Immigrants, Karina Pedroza Sotelo
Struggles Of Female Immigrants, Karina Pedroza Sotelo
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath and T.C. Boyle’s The Tortilla Curtain both that immigrating women face gender oppression, poverty, and historical problems in the hopes of a better life. Being at the bottom of the social hierarchy, immigrant women know more than anyone else the desire for the American Dream and the hope of a prosperous family. Though sticking out until the very end for some immigrant women, thanks to social prejudice, the American Dream will stay out of reach. Further research should be done to analyze the consequences of hindering women and their children from the American Dream

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Teen Substance Abuse is the act of teens showing dependence on drugs or alcohol or any harmful substance, and it is a serious problem in today’s society. This affects many teenagers in all aspects of life and harms their social life, home life, and negatively affects their health. While the use of opioids has fallen in recent years, other drugs have risen in popularity among teens. These include marijuana and vaping, the former is seen as a gateway drug and the latter statistically leads to the user being more likely to smoke cigarettes.
Immigration, Fatima Jaramillo
Immigration, Fatima Jaramillo

Immigrants want nothing but the best, not only for themselves, but for their families. Immigrants are those who choose to take the greatest risks and put their sweat and tears into everything they do because they keep reaching for the happy ending, instead of worrying about the obstacles that come with immigrating.
In the United States the true definition that government gives an immigrant is: “An alien who has been granted the right by United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) to reside permanently in the United States and to work without restrictions in the United States.”

Effects Of Discrimination On Society, Elizabeth Miller
Effects Of Discrimination On Society, Elizabeth Miller
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Discrimination is the idea of treating an individual differently because of a specific bias that is felt against them. This acts as a theory of grouping based on the party, class, or category in which everyone is judged. Prejudice however, refers to the negative attitudes or opinions aimed at a person over something out of their control. Discrimination and prejudice may take place in different forms. Today, both discrimination and prejudice are still ongoing issues that many individuals experience daily.

Meme Culture: Its Effects On Society, Mathew Ford
Meme Culture: Its Effects On Society, Mathew Ford
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
This was a project to see the effect of memes on society and if memes have a postive or negative change. This is important because our society changes very easy and it is good to see some of the ways it is being changed and if these kinds of changes are hurting or helping us. Although memes have had a mixed impact on society, the majority of their societal effects have been positive.
