It is important to address conflict in the medical field for a variety of reasons ranging from reducing turnover to increasing the quality of care received by patients. One way to assist with the management of medical conflict is by teaching resolution techniques to medical personnel. Students have perceptions of the on-line course environment whether they have taken an on-line course or not. A random sample (N = 100) of undergraduate (n = 34) and graduate (n = 66) students were administered a student perception questionnaire on students' attitudes towards studying online versus traditional classroom instruction in a large, private, southern New England University. Thirty-nine percent of the participants have a part-time job, 29% have a full-time job, and the remaining 32% are not currently employed. Thirty-three percent of the sample was male and 67% were female. Results of the survey questionnaire indicate that 29% of …

The purpose of this study was to explore 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) as support systems for at-risk Hispanic youth. Expanding upon previous theories that analyzed afterschool programs and bilingual programs separately, this study sought to understand how 3rd, 4th and 5th grade at-risk Hispanic youth attending the 21st CCLC, Afterschool Centers on Education, perceive the afterschool programs in a small school district in South Texas. A case study was organized at Saratoga Elementary school in Lincoln, Nebraska to obtain data on what children desire in a garden space. To collect this data a school garden space was constructed and an after school garden club was implemented. Students who participated in the after school garden club partook in the study by drawing their ideal garden. Elements that the subjects drew were identified and categorized into ‘highly desired’ and ‘somewhat desired’.

These elements were then incorporated into a proposed garden design plan for Saratoga. The proposal plan uses Permaculture design methods to emphasize sustainability.

Does A Co-Learner Delivery Model In A Mathematics Methods Course Affect Pre-Service Teacher Candidates’ Self-Efficacy In Teaching Mathematics?,, John J. Ribeiro, Denise Demagistris

Teacher Education

This study is related to a previous study (Ribeiro, 2009) that examined teachers’ perceptions of teaching self-efficacy. In the first study the sample consisted of two groups of teachers that took the same professional development course in mathematics. The comparison group took the course in their school district with other teachers and the experimental group took the course with pre-service teachers in a university classroom. After completing the course, both groups were measured in three dimensions of teaching self-efficacy: student engagement, instructional strategies, and classroom climate. Findings indicated that although both groups had significant gains in self-efficacy toward teaching mathematics …

Linda Erwin, an Arkansas native, began her career as an elementary and then a home economics teacher. She later moved to Tennessee and taught adult vocational home economics classes. She eventually went to work for Shirley Watkins, the school nutrition director for Memphis City Schools, who introduced her to child nutrition. Erwin eventually moved to Georgia where she continued her career, becoming a food service director, and became very active in the Georgia School Food Service Association. She retired after twenty-eight years in the Georgia child nutrition programs.

Hendrix then worked as a school nutrition director for one year before becoming an area consultant for school nutrition with the Georgia Department of Education. After working as an area consultant in various Georgia locations for a number of years, Hendrix returned as a food service director for a large school district, where she worked for a further four years before retirement.

Since then the idea of a year-round calendar has become more popular, and some schools have converted to a type of the year-round schedule. Understanding the consequences of tumor hypoxia has importance to both basic and applied cancer research. Using green fluorescent protein expressed ductal carcinoma in situ cells (cells of relatively less invasive natural among other types of breast cancer) kept in buffered and glucose rich media; cells were cultured under hypoxic conditions. Each day for ten days, one tissue culture dish is removed and counted for viability, toxicity, pH, and total cell count. These counts are then compared to a control kept in the incubator. Once 20% of the original sample remained viable, the cells were returned to normoxia and allowed to …

I investigated phylogeography of Borrichia frutescens (bushy seaside tansy) in Florida. Phylogeography is the study of the geographic distribution of the genealogy of individuals. It is used to help understand how the changes in the landscape shaped the populations’ gene pool. Borrichia frutescens is a coastal salt marsh plant which occurs in Florida. I isolated a segment of the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) in Borrichia frutescens. First, I obtained Borrichia frutescens from multiple locations in Florida. Next, I extracted DNA from leaves and perform a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify a segment of cpDNA; I will then determine the DNA …

This paper seeks to analyze the novel, Blood Colony, by Tananarive Due, with particular focus on how the main character, Fana, does and/or does not identify with feminism. Fana is a young teenage girl with rare and magical blood who seeks to eliminate the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the help of her friends. As Fana’s journey progresses, she undergoes the stages of feminist self-actualization in the context of the mythological hero’s journey. Background: Critical to the success of cancer immunotherapies is the identification of appropriate target antigens. Cancer-testis antigens (CTAs) are ectopically expressed immunoprivileged antigens transcriptionally controlled by DNA methylation which have utility as immunotherapeutic targets. 5-azacytidine, an analogue of cytidine, has been shown to induce expression of CTAs in cancer. During the experiment, we analyzed matched samples from 42 myelodysplastic syndrome patients receiving an oral regimen of 5-azacytidine to determine if an anti-CTA immune response was generated.

Methods: Immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses to a panel of 29 CTAs including NY-ESO1, Mage-1, and SSX2 were analyzed by ELISA, Western Blot, and SEREX …
