Today, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a growing interest, concern, and need for technological literacy. To this end, the International Technology Education Association (ITEA) through the Technology for All Americans Project, has developed and promulgated the Standards for Technological Literacy: Content for the Study of Technology. This effort is part of the ongoing initiative to develop technology standards on a national level, and to focus on what every student in grades K-12 should know and be able to do in order to achieve technological literacy (ITEA, 2000). Exploring Animal-Assisted Therapy As A Reading Intervention Strategy, Maria S. Kaymen

This study is an examination of animal-assisted therapy in an attempt to explore the ways it may serve as reading intervention program for struggling readers. Due to the low rate of literacy in the U.S., children are often put into reading intervention programs where they are required to read to an adult; potentially creating anxiety that may act as a deterrent to reading regularly, and thus contributing to the condition of aliteracy, that is, possessing the basic skills to read yet having no desire to do so. Spirituality Among A Predominately African American College Student Population, Dixie L. Dennis, Terence Hicks, Priya Banerjee, Brent G. Dennis

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of spirituality among 430 predominately African American undergraduate students who completed the 48-item Life Attitude Profile-Revised (LAP-R). T-tests revealed that these students had a higher spirituality score than their predominately White counterparts who recently completed the LAP-R. Unlike the White students, no significant gender differences were found among specific spiritual indices. If these students use their moderately high degree of spirituality to influence health-related behaviors, the high rates of morbidity and mortality common among African American adults may lessen.

Alberta Frost has worked for the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service since 1967. She started out working in the Food Stamp Program for several years before moving into child nutrition programs. She has in fact worked in all of the FNS programs at some point or another, including food distribution, child nutrition, and the WIC Program.

Stan Garnett grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He served in the Peace Corps and worked for the Catholic Relief Service early in his career. He joined the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service in 1971 and worked in child nutrition programs there for thirty-six years. He retired as the Director of Child Nutrition Programs in December 2007. Stan is currently the Executive Director of the Global Nutrition Foundation.

Robert M. (Bob) Eadie served as Chief of the Policy and Program Development Branch, Child Nutrition Division, of the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. This branch is responsible for publishing regulations that deal with the National School Lunch, the Child Care Food Program, the Summer Program, the Special Milk Program, and other Child Nutrition Programs. They write regulations, issue policy interpretations, and provide guidance, materials, handbooks, instructions, and anything necessary for a state agency or a school district to have in their hands to operate the program. Kellogg Foundation Chooses Nebraska Initiative For National Grant: Hometown Competitiveness, Jeff Yost

Lincoln, Nebraska, USA—HomeTown Competitiveness, a Nebraska initiative currently working in seven counties and communities in Nebraska, has been chosen as one of six recipients of grants provided through the W. K. Kellogg Foundation’s 75^th Anniversary Entrepreneurship Development Systems for Rural America.

The $2 million award, over three years, was approved by the Kellogg Foundation Board of Directors meeting at Battle Creek, MI last month. More than 180 applications were received for the grants to develop six national models in rural entrepreneurship.
