Raising children in a multilingual environment is a very challenging but important part of child development. Many families can agree that having the ability to know multiple languages is a huge advantage to have for future purposes. Separating the role of schools and parents is a very important process. At home, families encounter many activities and real life scenarios. This makes a huge impact on a children's language and literacy. Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
In the United States, children not only experience domestic abuse at home but can also be an issue while placed in the foster care system. In the foster care system, the abuse suffered by these individuals is increased due to home instability. Abuse can take place in many forms (physical, emotional, economical, and sexual) and can occur in many places. It can become a life-threatening crime or a crime that affects an individual’s day-to-day life. The youth and young adults who pass through this system are left with physical injuries and adverse childhood experiences (abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction). The …
Media Manipulation And Perseverance, Ivan Palma Vargas
Media Manipulation And Perseverance, Ivan Palma Vargas
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Media manipulation is a technique the media use to paint a false image that persuades their audience to their views on topics. In 1984, by George Orwell, the falsification of history and constant propaganda spread by the Ministries are an eerie resemblance to today’s American media spreading false information and biased viewpoints to implement irrational thoughts and emotions to their audience. The significance of media manipulation is the impact it has on American citizens as media in the digital era is at constant show and citizens are constantly taking in false information. The research conducted was on a survey after …

Acculturation, Nyanhial Wiyual Pal
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
The phenomenon of acculturation occurs when groups of people from different cultures come into constant contact with shifts in the original culture, the host country's culture, or the cultures of both groups. It can affect immigrants’ health and well-being as a result of coping with stressful experiences such as prejudice, racism, and poverty, as well as changes in or loss of identity, a lack of social support, exposure to diverse views, cultural values and norms, and particular patterns of health behaviors (drinking, smoking, taking illicit drugs).
Addiction-Family Impacts, Emily Orona
Addiction-Family Impacts, Emily Orona
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Drug and alcohol addiction is a disease that negatively affects a person's brain and behavior which leads to an inability to control the use of legal or illegal drugs. Addiction is sometimes used interchangeably with abuse, although they differ tremendously. Those who abuse drugs and alcohol still have control over their lives, while those with an addiction have a disease that affects many aspects of their life. Drug and alcohol addiction does not only impact the individual, but also their family. It is especially more challenging when a parent has addiction. Addiction affects not only the parent, but the child …

1984: A Reality For Soviet Citizens, German Murcia-Martinez
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Many countries have fallen victim to tyrannical leaders in the past. For example, Joseph Stalin had the Soviet Union under his grip for the longest time. His rule did not end until his death. In George Orwell’s novel, 1984, the country of Oceania was being controlled by Big Brother with the help of the Party. While being somewhat different, both the Soviet Union under Stalin and Oceania share incredible similarities.
Why We Create Enemies, Jerry Mejia
Why We Create Enemies, Jerry Mejia
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Our enemies are not always distinguishable by features such as a black trench coat or twirly mustache. However, humans still attempt to characterize their enemies into a stereotype. This is to create a sense of calm-you know who your enemy is. This research topic explored why society requires a scapegoat to feel better about its own shortcomings. Even if the worst happens, at least we will know who to blame. This has been human nature for thousands of years and will continue to do so.

Learned Helplessness And Domestic Violence, Nayla G. Torres Ruiz
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, social status, or sexual orientation. A phenomenon known as learned helplessness may play a role in why victims of domestic violence remain in those unsafe environments. Learned helplessness (LH) is a psychological trait, which results from repeated exposure to uncontrollable and aversive events. LH contributes to submissiveness and reluctance to leave an abusive relationship. LH can develop from childhood experiences and circumstances, such as controlling, authoritarian, and demanding parents. LH can also develop during adulthood and whilst in abusive relationships, as the victims are often led to believe by the …

The importance of this issue led to the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Alzheimer's Effects On A Family, Brianna Sanchez
Alzheimer's Effects On A Family, Brianna Sanchez
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Alzheimer’s is a word many families despise; a disease that weakens hearts and takes away the ones families love most. The disease is said to be deadly--but not sudden--with no cure. As awful as it sounds, the death is devastating but is not the worst part of this disease: the worst part is the stages leading up to the full-blown disease that families have to watch that hurts most and could make or break a family.
What makes Alzheimer’s hard to live with is how family members have to slowly watch their loved ones fade away, mentally and physically. In …

Effects Of Separation On The Immigrant Family, Mainor Ramirez
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
In the United States of America, deportation has always been an issue, becoming a greater issue in today’s society. Deportation can be defined as a lawful expulsion of a person from a country. Many families have come to the U.S. in the hope of a brighter and better future, but that is not always the case. Constantly running in fear of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), they struggle to survive in a land of unknown. What many people do not know are the reasons why families come to the U.S and the effects deportation has on children when they …
A Quantitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Dispositions And Technology Integration Knowledge Of English Language Teachers, Moe D. Greene
A Quantitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Dispositions And Technology Integration Knowledge Of English Language Teachers, Moe D. Greene
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the pervasiveness of educational technological tools, their potential is generally overlooked. An examination of technology integration literature suggests a gap in understanding why teachers lack the necessary knowledge to successfully integrate technology in their teaching as well as an absence of a robust technology integration theoretical framework. Technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) was developed to explain the specific knowledge needed for effective technology integration. Several limitations, however, have been noted in regards to the ability of this framework to capture the connections between the complexities of teachers’ contexts and their technology integration knowledge. This dissertation advances current literature by …

English Proficiency Or Post-School Success? The Miseducation Of English Learners, Jatnna Acosta
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
English learners in the U.S. are academically unprepared at the secondary level, ad such systemic barriers lead to limited opportunities for post-school success (Umansky, 2016). Additional research is necessary to examine the correlation between the impact of a school’s ethnic diversity on the academic achievement of students identified as ELs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the educational outcomes of ELs at the high school level as a result of the school’s ethnic diversity. This study provides quantitative data from the Ed-Data Education Data Partnership. The data is disaggregated by the ethnic diversity index, percentage of enrolled ELs …

Investigando Los Éxitos Y Las Dificultades De Implementar Un Programa De Inmersión Dual A Través De Las Perspectivas De Tres Administradores, Victoria E. Slaybaugh
World Languages and Cultures
This Modern Languages and Literatures senior project investigates and analyses the successes and struggles of implementing a dual immersion program through interviews with three dual immersion principles. In interviewing three highly experienced administrators, ample information was collected on why some programs are prosperous while others see little success. Each individual principal had unique and valuable input, especially with regard to why their respective schools changed programs from 50/50 to 90/10, why they implemented K-12, and even why they chose to eliminate the program entirely. Using supplemental studies to more thoroughly examine the historical and social context of dual immersion, this …

Self-Directed Learning Practices In Esl: How Beginning Adult Latinx English Language Learners Can Increase Learning Outcomes, Jessica Parisi
Master's Projects and Capstones
This field project investigates the self-directed learning (SDL) practices that could increase learner outcomes in English language acquisition for beginning adult English language learners (ELLs), and presents on a website designed for the learner, the practices and local resources to engage them. Non-credit English as a second language (ESL) courses in community colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area have high enrollment and low levels of advancement, especially beginning levels. Latinx adult ELLs face unique challenges that contribute to their low rates of advancement, including linguistic isolation, and work and home duties that often prevent learners from attending classes the …

Don’T Be Fooled, Trauma Is A Systemic Problem: Trauma As A Case Of Weaponized Educational Innovation, Debi Khasnabis, Simona Goldin
Occasional Paper Series
We examine the dangers and affordances of trauma-informed practice, focusing specifically on how this approach can be misused to cause harm. Further, we elaborate how teacher educators can support teachers in developing systemically trauma-informed teaching practice. We analyze and share detailed educational designs showing how counter story can support educators to recognize and contend with racist interpretations of trauma-informed practice. These lenses are frequently used to injure, blame and pathologize, in particular, poor children and families of color.

Change-Makers: A Grassroots Approach To Culturally Responsive Leadership And Teaching, Abigail Amoako Kayser, Angel Miles Nash, Brian Kayser
Education Faculty Articles and Research
While achievement and opportunity gaps and systemic racism exist in the majority of school districts across the United States, not every school district authentically acknowledges and addresses these issues. In this case study, researchers examine a PreK–12 school district situated in a racially and economically diverse mid-Atlantic city in which race- and class-based discrimination have been well documented and recent episodes of extreme racial violence have affected the community. The school district, which employs 1,300 teachers and serves over 14,000 students, developed and implemented a grassroots approach by forming a district-wide culturally responsive leadership team. Through interviews with 10 culturally …

Heritage Language maintenance provides learner tangible benefits in academic achievement, language acquisition, and career opportunity. Intangibly, it enhances the learner’s self-esteem and cultural identity. The case here reflects the Mandarin Chinese learning experience of three children who were born in the United States of a migrant family from Hong Kong where the Cantonese Chinese dialect language is more predominant. The learning effort was complicated by the parents’ native Cantonese Chinese dialect. The parents and children strived to balance the learning dynamics between Mandarin and Cantonese. The results of the study indicate that successful heritage language maintenance can be achieved with …
Syntactic Accidents In The Spontaneous Speech Of English And Armenian Speakers, Karen Velyan
Syntactic Accidents In The Spontaneous Speech Of English And Armenian Speakers, Karen Velyan
ECTESOL Review
Fragmented syntax or a break of the flow of surface syntax is well known to be an indispensable part of spontaneous spoken language. Interruptions in the flow of speech may be triggered by pragmatic reasons, changes in syntactic planning and performance errors, which results in syntactic fragments. Syntactic accidents may take different forms in the actual flow of speech. This study presents a cross-linguistic comparative analysis of the cases of syntax in the speech of low socioeconomic status speakers of English and Armenian. Based on data from informal interviews with native speakers, the analysis presents a variety of syntactic accidents, …
The Reflective Approach To Teaching Culture Within The Efl Classroom, Lucia Schiopu
The Reflective Approach To Teaching Culture Within The Efl Classroom, Lucia Schiopu
ECTESOL Review
This article examines the reflective approach in the teaching of culture in the EFL classroom, which is not just a mere gathering of information, but is the creation and construction of discourses that break or maintain cultural stereotypes. This is also an approach where meaning is constructed that is shaped by the quality and depth of cultural sensitivity and awareness. Teaching and learning a culture reflectively does not necessarily mean that the learner is taught to behave in accordance with specific social norms but to introduce an acceptable and appropriate conduct for the use of language in terms of intelligibility, …
