The activity guide, Turn of the 20th Century Immigrant Experience, which is designed for a social studies immigration unit, uses an interdisciplinary approach to teach students about immigrating to a new country. It connects to the lives and interests of our students as almost everyone originally immigrated to America from somewhere. In essence, some students immigrated themselves, while others have parents or grandparents who immigrated to the United States. This activity guide is also specifically designed to teach fourth grade students about immigration at the turn of the 20th century. The New York State Standards for fourth grade require that …

The Semiotics Of Sexual Identity: Myth Vs. History, Mackenzie Schroth

Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies

In this project, I argue that gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) students majoring in liberal arts have a higher likelihood of being out and of feeling confident in their identity and manner of self-expression. On the other hand, GLB students majoring in business-related fields are more likely to either be closeted or to fit a very defined, stereotyped gay identity. I test my hypothesis by conducting a semiotic analysis of sexual identity and by looking to the history of sexual identity categories. I also survey and interview various students, both liberal arts and business majors, to determine their perceptions about …

Much has changed since the Strategic Directions for Gettysburg were articulated in 2007. We have had transition in the leadership of the College in key positions including the president, the provost, and the vice president for development, alumni and parent relations. The economy has shifted seismically and in ways we certainly would not have predicted in 2007. Demographic projections related to the diversity of high school students and their geographic distributions have become a reality. The purpose of this study is to investigate lexico-grammatical changes in the language of instruction in the Language Arts textbooks from four consecutive grades. The nature and rate of such changes are addressed within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The study focuses on analyzing lexical density and variation, grammatical intricacy, process types, and clause complexes in the sample texts obtained from four elementary school textbooks for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. The analysis shows that there are gradual changes in the lexico-grammatical features of the language of instruction across the grade levels; however, these gradual changes are not …

Recent financial problems have highlighted the portion of financial literacy classes related to credit and spending. The recent bursting of the real estate asset bubble and the ongoing economic crisis framed the research question for this study regarding the experiences of social studies and business teachers in teaching coursework in credit-related finance management. The purpose of this study was to understand teacher experiences in the classroom that involved teaching financial information related to consumer credit. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate how a well developed and validated national standard for United States history can affect public school achievement levels. Currently, there is no mandated national standard for United States history; rather it has been left to the respective states to create their own. This study focused on the state of Virginia, which has been able to meet both the nationally mandated adequate yearly progress (AYP) level, and achieve high proficiency levels in United States history achievement. Motivation, which is based on experience, is crucial in promoting literacy acquisition; however, little research has explored what children experience during literacy activities such as poetry reading and writing. This phenomenological study explored what elementary students experienced during literacy activities focused on poetry. Educational reform inspired by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is based on a narrow range of quantitative research and does not consider the multifaceted nature of literacy and the experiences of the learner.
