Boosting Students’ Fluency Through Incorporating Context-Specific Content Into Task-Based Language Teaching, Reflecting On Their Fatalistic Cultural Beliefs, And Fostering Their Agency., Nixon Cadet
MA TESOL Collection
This study will look into incorporating context-specific content into Task-Based Language Teaching techniques to enable students at the American University of the Caribbean in Les Cayes, Haiti, to develop fluency. It will particularly draw lessons from my own language learning and teaching experiences and explore ways to establish a culture that nurtures students’ agency. In my context, students have deeply ingrained fatalistic cultural beliefs which are not conducive to optimal learning. Therefore, fostering a culture that reconsiders these views could strongly help boost their self-efficacy and confidence and compel them to embrace productive learning strategies and behaviors. This study will …

Transcultural And Translinguistic Latinx Discourses: Challenging Raciolinguistic Discourses In A School Community - Towards A Frame Of Resistance, Madjiguene Salma Bah Fall
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study grounded in ethnographic methods examined how transcultural and translinguistic students responded to ideological discourses in their school community. I explored the discourses of social power and hierarchical structures and ideological discourses present in the students' experiences, and investigated how they accepted or rejected the ideologies exhibited in these discourses. This research was motivated by three questions: (1) What are the discourses of social power and hierarchical structures present in the experiences of middle-school Latinx transcultural and translinguistic students in their school community? (2) What ideological discourses are enacted in these experiences? (3) How do these students …

Abstract ᎧᏃᎮᏍᎩ
Language, cultural immersion, and intergenerational land-based education have shown the potential to vastly improve dire health issues that Indigenous people face. What is the most effective way to produce a large number of second language learners who speak at a basic level in order to improve Indigenous health?
Relationship is a vital part of Indigenous cosmology. Rather than promoting the consumption of words as things, acquisition will be more readily integrated into relationship-based thought when also interacting with them in context through story, and cultural activities that are fun, understandable, and engage community. Many successful language immersion models …
Student Perceptions Regarding The Use Of Purposive English In A Spanish As A Foreign Language Classroom, Kacey Booth
Student Perceptions Regarding The Use Of Purposive English In A Spanish As A Foreign Language Classroom, Kacey Booth
Dissertations
In modern American society, diversity is both challenged and celebrated, and inclusion is imperative. This ideology begins in the classroom. Oftentimes, this celebration of diversity, more specifically linguistic diversity, is most visible in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) classes and similar bilingual educational programs. In TESOL programs, students’ international identities are highlighted and students are often instructed using multilingual educational resources to scaffold their acquisition of English. Historically, foreign language teaching also utilized dual-language instructional methodologies. Such archaic teaching methodologies have since been replaced by more modern and immersive sociopsycholinguistic approaches such as Communicative Language Teaching. Such …

Early Language And Literacy Skills Of Spanish-Speaking Dual Language Learners, Alejandro Rodriguez, Marc Goodrich, Maggie Harms, Lisa Fitton
Early Language And Literacy Skills Of Spanish-Speaking Dual Language Learners, Alejandro Rodriguez, Marc Goodrich, Maggie Harms, Lisa Fitton
UCARE: Research Products
The purpose of this study is to examine the early language measures that are the best predictors of English reading achievement and to determine whether assessing DLLs’ Spanish language skills contributes to the prediction of English reading achievement. Preschool and kindergarten often represent DLLs’ first significant exposure to English, and development of English language proficiency is strongly linked to English reading achievement (Storch & Whitehurst, 2002). Because DLLs may not be exposed to English consistently prior to preschool or kindergarten, they often enter kindergarten with lower levels of English proficiency than their monolingual peers. This makes it difficult to identify …

Teaching The Power Of Pictures, Rachel Speranza
KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference
Though choosing sources that have specific copyright that allows for the reuse, modification, and redistribution of pictures is an important lesson for all students of all grade levels, what’s even a more important lesson is that of the power of social media. The perfect picture can spread like a wildfire across all social media platforms. Pictures have the power to change someone’s mood, political opinion, and even advocate for change on the other side of the world.

Educational Studies Dissertations
This qualitative study investigates how creative writing plays a role in strengthening and deepening literacy skills of adults in community-based high school equivalency diploma programs, which are operated under the publicly funded, adult basic education umbrella. Specifically, the study explores two sub-questions: How can creative writing processes support adult high school equivalency students’ achievement of personal and/or academic goals? How does a curricular focus on individual storytelling build students’ literacy confidence and/or their sense of student agency? Data sources includes pre- and post-surveys, pre- and post-interviews, field notes, and student work based on a curriculum designed using best practices in …

This paper explores how Language Arts teachers at different grade levels may be faced with a variety of contextual factors that influence their grading practices. In order to do justice to this topic, a literature review will situate and contextualize writing instruction, learning standards, and assessments. Using a qualitative single case study design, this study will present the findings from nineteen in-depth teacher interviews, document analysis, and field notes.

What If The Arts Were Taken Away?, Joseph S. Pizzo

The arts give clarity to their emotions, situations, questions, and lives. Students experiencing all the arts gain a comprehensive perspective. Lyndon B. Johnson observed: “(I)t is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation.”

The poem and photographs describe a scene where a teacher goes to the cafeteria to pick up his class. As he comes to their table, the teacher encounters a fight between two boys. After getting the situation under control, and settling down the children, they head back to the room. The teacher calms himself down when a second fight breaks out. He decides to let the boys fight and takes the class out of the room, "freezing" the boys." At the end he "holds on" to his desk to gain control of himself and return to the present moment.

Theme For English H: Identity Poems In A Multicultural English Class, Annie Yon
New Jersey English Journal
With many school districts nationwide experiencing rapid growth in the number of students of color, culturally diverse students, and students of low-income families, it is important for teachers to plan culturally responsive activities that cater to a heterogeneous group and to create an inclusive space for students' diverse backgrounds, identities, and voices. In my class, writing and sharing identity poems give students an opportunity to feel recognized and celebrated for their differences.

In the era of high stakes testing, students have become conditioned to find the “right answer”and earn an “A” as opposed to engaging in critical thinking and productive struggle. In an effort to break this cycle, I restructured the literacy methods course to an inquiry model; Launch-Explore-Discuss.

While students strive to avoid ambiguity, exploring it can lead to understanding challenging texts. Rather than beginning in-class discussions by learning what students think, we can use what social media theorists refer to as “ambient awareness” to start at a more advanced stage to cultivate student confusion for pedagogical purposes.

Beyond Man Vs. Nature: Utilizing Book Clubs On Nature And Climate Change To Create Engaged Citizens Of The Anthropocene, Shannon Falkner, Ryan Skardal
New Jersey English Journal
In this article, we consider the following question: "What’s next for ELA? Over the next 10 years, how will our students change? How might we need to change? Which traditions and practices will (or should) grow obsolete, and which should be preserved?" Our aim is to help teachers find ways to bring "climate literacy" into their classrooms and to help teachers recognize the central role that ELA as a discipline can play in educating students about the environment and climate change. We see this topic as highly engaging for students, and we want teachers to reconsider and reanimate older approaches …
