The Reading Comprehension Strategies Of Second Language Learners: A Spanish-English Study, Karen Acosta Mar 2019

The Reading Comprehension Strategies Of Second Language Learners: A Spanish-English Study, Karen Acosta

Dimensions

This study identified the reading comprehension strategies that English-speaking college students enrolled in beginner, intermediate, and advanced Spanish language classes at a major Midwestern university in the United States used to comprehend a text in their second language. The findings suggest that readers tended to use the same comprehension strategies when approaching a text in their second language, regardless of their proficiency level. However, there was a qualitative difference in how these strategies were used by readers of low, middle, and high proficiency in Spanish. Readers of all levels used their first language when reading in their second language.

An Investigation Of Teacher Practices For The Instruction Of French As A Third Language Among Spanish-Speaking Students, Anna Surin, Victoria Russell, Kelly F. Davidson

Dimensions

World Language (WL) instruction in the U.S. can no longer be aimed toward a monolingual English speaker acquiring a second language (L2). Secondary students who take WL courses may speak a variety of languages, bringing their home language and culture into the classroom. However, it is presently unknown to what degree WL teachers are equipped to teach a third language (L3) to students who are bilingual or Heritage speakers of Spanish. The authors …

This causal-comparative research study was designed to investigate the inclusion of these skills in individual and group settings in a pre-/post-test format, while controlling for the pre-test, using NILD strategies and methodology. The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant difference in reading achievement existed between the two groups when …

Instafrench: An Investigation Of Learner Perceptions Of Social Media And Images To Develop L2 Writing, Julie Carver

Dimensions

Social media has quickly become an integral part of day-to-day interaction for many university students. This exploratory study investigated the use of the social media site Instagram for written discussions in three introductory French classes (n= 83). Specifically, student perception on the role of image as a mediational tool (Vygotsky, 1978) to support writing and reading processes was explored. Findings from survey data showed that participants perceived image to play a role in four areas: their preferences for certain writing topics, their choices to engage (or not engage) in discussion with their peers, their reading comprehension, and their writing. Teaching Grammatical Terminology: A Content Analysis Of Popular French Textbooks, Alison Clifton Mar 2019

Teaching Grammatical Terminology: A Content Analysis Of Popular French Textbooks, Alison Clifton

Dimensions

Even in this digital age, as educational technologies are increasingly integrated into teaching and learning, textbooks continue to play a significant role within language classrooms. Many textbooks maintain a traditional approach to presenting grammar, including using grammatical terminology. However, students seem to have little knowledge of these terms, which may make grammar explanations difficult to comprehend. This investigation examines data from eight widely-used beginning-level French textbooks to investigate how grammatical terminology is employed. The findings confirm that grammar explanations in beginning-level French textbooks feature a large number of grammatical terms and many of these terms are not defined. An instructional …

The Impact Of A Teacher’S Implementation Of The Readworks Digital Reading Program On Second Graders’ Reading Fluency And Comprehension Test Scores, Cynthia Molina

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

Since elementary school student performance on the end-of-year summative Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Standards of Learning (SOL) reading test is vital in impacting school accreditation, computer-assisted instruction has become popular. Online reading programs have existed in many elementary schools in Norfolk Public School district since 1996, such as Breakthrough to Literacy (McGraw-Hill Companies, 2002), Istation in 2014 (Mathes, Torgesen, & Herron, 2015), and the i-Ready program from 2015 to 2017 (Curriculum Associates, 2014). The problem is that there is insufficient empirical research supporting the use of the ReadWorks program at several Norfolk, Virginia’s elementary schools.

The purpose of this …

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Socioeconomic differences in children’s reading and educational outcomes have been thoroughly documented throughout literature. The aim of the present study was to expand our understanding …

Possible Techniques For Translating Personal Names In Children And Young Adult Literature, Ani Susanti, A. Effendi Kadarisman

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Personal names are considered “specific words”and thus most often kept untranslated. However, as translation theory has developed, making it not only changing language features but also mediating cultural aspects, personal names are reconsidered in translation. Since they are culturally bound, this study aims to find out, when personal names are translated, what translation strategies apply and why. The data were collected from the weekly comic Donal Bebek (2018) as well as from the Hunger Games trilogy novels written by Suzanne Collins (2008, 2009, 2010) and translated by Hetih Rusli (2009, 2010, 2012). Journal of Student Success in Writing (Archived)

This article presents the results from an IRB-approved study that researched student perspectives on procrastination. Qualitative and quantitative data from over 200 surveys administered to first-year writers illustrated multiple reasons why students procrastinated, and these reasons are much deeper than a strong desire to do something else. Results indicated that when students perceived a lack of engagement with their topic (whether the engagement was actually there or not), they were more likely to procrastinate. In addition, students who had fewer choices in their writing assignments, such as topic choices or format choices, were more likely to procrastinate and avoid the …

Making Critical Connections: How To Apply The Analytic Guiding Frame (Agf) And Overall Guiding Frame (Ogf) In Qualitative Data Analysis, Su Li Chong

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative researchers often find data analysis to be challenging, thus resulting in a process of seeking out and conforming to ready-made analytical methods to substantiate the analyses. However, ready-made analytical methods do not necessarily fully fit with all or any data; instead qualitative methodologies and analysis require adaptations. In this paper, a practical 4-step analytic approach that applies a 2-part framework is proposed. The Analytic Guiding Frame (AGF) and Overall Guiding Frame (OGF) form a practical and theoretical platform for complicated analytic processes to occur. In this paper I describe how use of this approach enables qualitative researchers to make …

Techniques And Methods Change, Methodology Remains The Same: Web Technology Use As Cosmetic Change In Cfl Classrooms, Justin Olmanson, Xianquan Liu, Nannan Wang, Christopher Heselton

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

Technology has been a staple in the language classroom for more than fifty years. From audio cassettes, to video tapes, to multimedia CD-ROMs, to static and interactive web technologies, language teachers have taken the time to learn these tools and integrate them into the classroom experience. Each new technology, each new app, creates an opportunity to alter the experience of teaching and learning—often supporting increased authentic interactions with the Chinese language. This potential however can go unrealized when the ways the technologies are used align with more traditional grammar and vocabulary-focused teaching methodologies and promote efficiency over communication. In this …
