Online Translator Usage In Foreign Language Writing, Errol M. O’Neill
Online Translator Usage In Foreign Language Writing, Errol M. O’Neill
Dimensions
With the increasing availability of technology, one issue that has arisen in foreign language education is the use of online translation (OT) sites that claim to convert text from one language to another but are generally prohibited for classwork due to ethical and pedagogical concerns. In a study to explore the effects of OT usage, teacher raters were able to determine, to a statistically significant level, on which compositions OT was used; there were, however, a number of cases for which OT use went undetected and some instances it was incorrectly suspected. This article discusses the results of the study …
Staying In The Target Language While Teaching Middle School And High School, William Worden
Staying In The Target Language While Teaching Middle School And High School, William Worden
Dimensions
This article advocates the use of the target language at all times in the classroom at all levels of language instruction. While addressed specifically to middle school and high school teachers, the article suggests an approach to language instruction that can be implemented for students of all ages. After recounting how the author’s experience teaching high school students convinced him to teach exclusively in Spanish, the article then addresses possible objections to the instructional method, presents topics to cover when teaching Day 1 of Level 1 of a language, and discusses ways to help students thrive in an all-target-language classroom.
Evaluating Effective Teaching In The 21st Century World Language Classroom, Christina Huhn
Evaluating Effective Teaching In The 21st Century World Language Classroom, Christina Huhn
Dimensions
Stronge, Ward, and Grant (2011) emphasize the fundamental need to evaluate the teaching that occurs in our classrooms. They add that in order to effect change in the quality of our education, we must continue to investigate what constitutes effective teaching as it has significant implications for both the education of and assessment of teachers and their students. In West Virginia, what occurs in world language (WL) classrooms has been the topic of ongoing discussions between members of the state foreign language teachers association, current teachers, and the state’s WL coordinators. Despite notable positive momentum in WL education in the …

Finding Wisdom In Practice: The Genesis Of The Salty Chip, A Canadian Multiliteracies Collaborative, Kathryn Hibbert
Finding Wisdom In Practice: The Genesis Of The Salty Chip, A Canadian Multiliteracies Collaborative, Kathryn Hibbert
Education Publications
Using a narrative approach of ‘scenario building’, this paper documents the author’s quest to find her own wisdom in her professional practice and considers that quest in light of recent theorizing in the area of New Literacies research. Through the telling of four critical incidents and a subsequent analysis drawing on theories of cultural studies, critical literacy, critical pedagogy and critical disabilities studies, the author explores the process that led to the development of the Salty Chip: A Canadian Multiliteracies Collaborative. The network challenges outdated institutional frameworks that privilege developmentalism and practices rooted in intellectual measurement and standardization, and considers …
Perceptions Of Reading From A Reluctant Teen Reader, Colin Slaby
Perceptions Of Reading From A Reluctant Teen Reader, Colin Slaby
Theses and Graduate Projects
Research consistently shows that students begin their schooling with both a passion and a desire to read but as time progresses, many kids turn their backs on reading as a casual and consistent act once they reach middle school years. Research suggests that the simple joy of reading may increase scores in all core subject summative assessments and sparks important brain growth. The objective of this action research project was to interview sfudents from an 8th grade language arts classroom on their individual perceptions of reading. All students participating in the study had at some point of the school year …
Perspectiyes Of Struggling Readers On The Reading Process, Gaye Lynn Francisco
Perspectiyes Of Struggling Readers On The Reading Process, Gaye Lynn Francisco
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study was to discover how stmggling readers view the process of learning to read. The study uses qualitative methods to interview nine students, age eight through twelve, with a series of questions to discover what things they feel is helpful in learning to read. In addition, questions were asked to help identify the social and emotional perspectives of struggling readers. Two parent surveys were returned that supported statements made by their children. The results revealed that eight students preferred to use phonics over any other reading strategy. One student rated sounding out words as his second …
Effective Shared Storybook Readings In Large And Small Preschool Settings, Erin Ann Cooper Kost
Effective Shared Storybook Readings In Large And Small Preschool Settings, Erin Ann Cooper Kost
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this study was to look at engagement as a developing early literacy skill in small group and large classroom settings in two preschool classes. Specifically, this project considered the potential impact a small group reading club could have on three types of engagement behaviors preschool students may have in a large group setting: teacher to student, student to student and book to student. After twelve weeks of an additional daily small group reading, the morning preschool class had a larger number of responses in the posttest than the afternoon class, which did not have the additional readings. …
Where Are The Books For Polynesians? An Exploration Of Interests, Needs, And Available Resources, Victor Neves
Where Are The Books For Polynesians? An Exploration Of Interests, Needs, And Available Resources, Victor Neves
The Utah English Journal
Polynesians (also referred to as Pacific Islanders) are the smallest minority group in the United States, making up .02% of the population. They tend, however to live in concentrated communities, near other Polynesians. The result is that in our schools we either have no Polynesians or an atypical concentration. 2010 census data shows that six of the top twenty cities with the highest Pacific Islander population are in Utah. Provo and Orem have around 20 times the national average, West Jordan 30 times the national average, Taylorsville 40 times the national average and Salt Lake 50 times the national average. …

College-Level Research Papers: The Byproduct Of A Common Core-Aligned Podcast Unit, Sarah Orme
The Utah English Journal
Cordless tools, water filters, satellite technology, and scratch resistant lenses. These are all surprising byproducts of NASA’s investment in space technology (Conger, 2013). In the Cold War race of space exploration in the 1960’s, scientists created diverse inventions that ultimately improved our daily lives. U.S. scientists were able to create these impressive technologies because of the massive investment in the end goal: getting the U.S. to the moon, mars, and beyond before the Russians. We can use this model in our classrooms to advance students’ education by using an engaging goal that facilitates successful byproducts. Unlike NASA, teachers can influence, …
On Reforms And The New State Core, Jon Ostenson
On Reforms And The New State Core, Jon Ostenson
The Utah English Journal
For a long time now, the professionalism of teachers has been under attack—from light-hearted jabs like the neighbor or friend who teases us about our “cushy” job that only requires us to work nine months out of the year to unflattering media portrayals to more serious attacks from politicians and business leaders who point fingers at teachers, blaming us for a multitude of problems in the schools and with students’ performance. Many of the reform efforts underway right now are aimed at us and have the ostensible goal of improving teaching. This is not in and of itself a bad …
Assigner Or Inspirer? My Journey Away From The Book Project, Christine Cluff Thompson
Assigner Or Inspirer? My Journey Away From The Book Project, Christine Cluff Thompson
The Utah English Journal
Pleased with both students’ presentations described above, their teacher awards them high marks for following the rubric: eye contact was made, props provided interest and evidence of the book’s plot and character development, opinions were shared and supported, the audience was engaged, and aside from Britney forgetting to show the book cover, both students did the required work to score an A grade. The only problem with the two projects? Neither student read the book they presented.
The Processes Of Change On Learning Literacy And Numeracy In South Australian Primary Schools, I Gusti Ngurah Darmawan, Carol Aldous
The Processes Of Change On Learning Literacy And Numeracy In South Australian Primary Schools, I Gusti Ngurah Darmawan, Carol Aldous
Shannon Research Press
Success in science and mathematics is predicated on successful literacy and numeracy learning. Yet schools and communities across the country struggle to negotiate factors that both impede and facilitate such learning - particularly factors over which they have some control. Working with data more comprehensive than that used previously and applying statistical methods only recently developed, researchers from the South Australian hub of the centre for Science, Information and Communication Technology and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR-SA) seek answers to three basic questions. What factors influence performance in Literacy and Numeracy? Does living in a rural and …
A Comparative Analysis Of Present And Past Participial Adjectives And Their Collocations In The Corpus Of Contemporary American English (Coca), Natalia Reilly
A Comparative Analysis Of Present And Past Participial Adjectives And Their Collocations In The Corpus Of Contemporary American English (Coca), Natalia Reilly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ESL grammar books have lists of present and past participial adjectives based on author intuition rather than actual word frequency. In these textbooks, the –ing and –ed participial adjectives derived from transitive verbs of state and emotion are presented in pairs such as interesting/interested, boring/bored, or surprising/surprised. This present study used the Corpus of Contemporary American English http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/ (COCA) to investigate the overall frequency of participial adjectives in use as well as their frequency within certain varieties of contexts. The results have shown that among most frequently used participial adjectives there are not only the participial adjectives derived from transitive …

It’s an excellent tool for ELA, Science, and …
Teaching In, Out, And Through Creative Nonfiction, Thomas Henry
Teaching In, Out, And Through Creative Nonfiction, Thomas Henry
The Utah English Journal
Paraphrasing the “Most Interesting Man in the World,” a marketing icon portrayed as a genius, adventurer, and connoisseur of the “finer things” in life who advertises those silly but comical beer commercials: I don’t always teach creative nonfiction, but when I do…. I tend to consider many different facets of the art, the genre, and the practice of “nonfiction.” Creative nonfiction (CNF), is more or less the pinnacle of what “good writing” is and should be in an even broader creative and rhetorical sense. This genre engages, teaches, and shares bits of knowledge in an accessible and distinctive way; furthermore, …
Book Review: Crafting Digital Writing: Composing Texts Across Media And Genres, Joseph Wiederhold
Book Review: Crafting Digital Writing: Composing Texts Across Media And Genres, Joseph Wiederhold
The Utah English Journal
We tend to teach the way we were taught, and many practicing teachers—myself included—were taught to write through analog tools. After reading this book, I realized my practice was still largely rooted in analog thinking. Even though I would consider my classroom plugged in to the digital world, reading Hicks’ book helped me realize that I often integrate technology by using it merely as a tool to publish or create a product. If that digital inclusion helps improve or bring efficacy to the writing process, we often consider the effort as a step toward digital literacy. This thinking is flawed, …
Effects Of Online Instructional Conversation On English As A Foreign Language Learners' Webquest Writing Performance : A Mixed Methods Study, Haesong Lee
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
WebQuests, or inquiry-oriented activities in which learners interact with Web-based information (Dodge, 1995, 1996, 2007), have recently been gaining popularity in education in general and in language education in particular. While it has the advantage of fostering higher-level thinking through authentic assignments, a WebQuest can be challenging to second or foreign language learners. In light of this challenge, Instructional Conversation (IC), or discussion-oriented form of teacher-led talk about text (Saunders & Goldenberg, 2007), may provide a solution to foreign/second language learners' difficulties with comprehension of Web-based information, thereby facilitating their WebQuest task performance. The purpose of this mixed methods study …
Mediational Effects Of Desktop-Videoconferencing Telecollaborative Exchanges On The Intercultural Communicative Competence Of Students Of French As A Foreign Language, Veronique Marie Martin
Mediational Effects Of Desktop-Videoconferencing Telecollaborative Exchanges On The Intercultural Communicative Competence Of Students Of French As A Foreign Language, Veronique Marie Martin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Since the early 2000s, foreign language practitioners and researchers have shown an increasing interest in exploring the affordances of multimodal telecollaborative environments for the linguistic and intercultural development of their students. Due in part to their inherent complexity, one-on-one desktop-videoconferencing contexts have not been widely explored. To this end, this study investigates if and how American students of French engaged in a telecollaborative exchange with a class of French students are able to develop their Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) through online interaction and the completion of a collaborative task. Adopting a case study approach, the video-recorded sessions of three dyads …
The Development Of A Model Of Culturally Responsive Science And Mathematics Teaching, Cecilia M. Hernandez, Amanda Morales, Gail Shroyer
The Development Of A Model Of Culturally Responsive Science And Mathematics Teaching, Cecilia M. Hernandez, Amanda Morales, Gail Shroyer
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This qualitative theoretical study was conducted in response to the current need for an inclusive and comprehensive model to guide the preparation and assessment of teacher candidates for culturally responsive teaching. The process of developing a model of culturally responsive teaching involved three steps: a comprehensive review of the literature; a synthesis of the literature into thematic categories to capture the dispositions and behaviors of culturally responsive teaching; and the piloting of these thematic categories with teacher candidates to validate the usefulness of the categories and to generate specific exemplars of behavior to represent each category. The model of culturally …

English Language Learners: The Impact Of Language And Socio-Cultural Factors On Learning, Lori Navarrete, Silvana M. R. Watson
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
[Introduction] Our daily educational experiences can be enriched by learning in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms because we learn from others whose experiences and beliefs are different than ours. We learn to communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals of varied backgroundsand then may then think twice about stereotypes, prejudices, and discriminatory behaviors because we grow as individuals, as stewards of knowledge, and as change agents. We become good citizens in a pluralistic society.
Effects Of Direct Instruction And Corrective Feedback On Second Language Acquisition, Don Jones, Helen Ramirez
Effects Of Direct Instruction And Corrective Feedback On Second Language Acquisition, Don Jones, Helen Ramirez
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
ABSTRACT
This study compared the effectiveness of differing instructional approaches used within two units of study in Spanish classes at a suburban middle school. The purpose of this quantitative, pre-experimental study was to determine if direct instruction in grammar and vocabulary combined with a variety of corrective feedback types would facilitate higher levels of second language acquisition than an instructional approach that concentrated on student activity and task performance. The theoretical base of the present study focused on associative-cognitive second language theories and hypotheses that explained how second language learning occurs. The purposive convenience sample was comprised of 86 students …

Literature Circles And Technology : A Study Of Students' Attitudes, Laura Ann Edwards
Graduate Research Papers
Technology and collaboration are important to students in the reading classroom. This paper investigates students' reading attitudes after participating in a literature circle with technology. This study compared students' reading attitudes prior to participating in the literature circle with technology unit and after participating in the unit using a survey and interview of selected students. The selected students were to represent four categories: introverted, unmotivated, high achieving, and low achieving. The results suggest that students have positive reading experiences when using technology. Additionally, the results suggest that students' reading attitudes are more positive when they are able to collaborate with …
The Effects Of Peer-Conferencing On Writing Revisions In A Second Grade Classroom, Emily C. Guetzlaff
The Effects Of Peer-Conferencing On Writing Revisions In A Second Grade Classroom, Emily C. Guetzlaff
Graduate Research Papers
Writing has long been known as one of the three "R's" in education. However, many educators lack instructional knowledge on how to teach writing. Revision and conferencing are part of the writing teacher's vocabulary, but little research exists on these topics. This study utilized qualitative and quantitative data to compare the effects of students trained in peer-conferencing and students not trained in peer-conferencing and the effect on their writing. The introduction presents the problem that led to the development of this study. A literature review provides existing research related to writing workshop, instruction in writing, revision, and collaboration through conferring. …
Books, Blogging, And Boredom : The Impact Of One-To-One Computing On Student Engagement And Literacy, Amanda M. Hudson
Books, Blogging, And Boredom : The Impact Of One-To-One Computing On Student Engagement And Literacy, Amanda M. Hudson
Graduate Research Papers
As one-to-one computing infiltrates education across the United States, stakeholders question the impact this technology will have on all involved. Teachers are realizing the effect that one-to-one computing has on the school, classroom, and curriculum as districts jump on the bandwagon and purchase laptops for every student. Research shows that classrooms, including language arts classrooms, incur many positive changes. One such change is the inclusion of new literacies into the curriculum. These new literacies will change how students read and write. Course management systems have also become common in many classrooms; and teachers, students, and parents are learning to negotiate …

The Uniqueness Of The English Language Learner : Research Based Strategies For English Language Learners, Carolyn Lindgren Dietz
The Uniqueness Of The English Language Learner : Research Based Strategies For English Language Learners, Carolyn Lindgren Dietz
Graduate Research Papers
Currently, the United States is experiencing a growth in the number of English Language Learners. At the same time, the US economy has shifted to a more knowledge based focus, making higher education a requirement (in order to be) able to compete for higher paying jobs. Using a "scientifically validated approach" (Short, Vogt, & Echevarria, 2008), the SIOP model is a framework for instructing English Language Learners. This research targets research based professional development for teachers, to provide the essential programming to meet the literacy learning needs of the English Language Learner.
