Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This article explores the use of language laboratories as an educational technology tool that plays a crucial role in language teaching. Although language laboratories are often regarded as valuable facilities, in practice their pedagogical and technical implications are frequently overlooked after installation. Common issues include a lack of trained technicians, poor equipment maintenance, and the mismatch between laboratory usage and the actual goals of language learning. As a result, many laboratories fail to function optimally and eventually fall into disuse. This paper aims to outline the background, development, and future prospects of language laboratory utilization. It also emphasizes the importance …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This paper discusses the theoretical understanding of tone in literary works, with a particular focus on Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick. Drawing on E.M. Forster’s framework, especially the concept of prophetic song, the author highlights how tone in literature can reflect the moral condition of humanity and its struggle with nature. Tone is understood not merely as a form of entertainment but as a means of expressing profound universal values. By comparing Forster’s ideas with other literary works, this paper emphasizes the importance of literary appreciation through the recognition and understanding of tone.

This article examines the various types of doctoral education across different countries and the diverse meanings attached to the doctoral degree. Like other academic titles, the doctoral degree has evolved throughout the 20th century and is not confined to medicine, but also extends to other fields, including languages. The paper highlights the distinctions between professional and non-professional doctorates, as well as the differences in doctoral education systems internationally, with particular emphasis on the United States and Europe. In the U.S., doctoral research tends to be more structured, while in other countries, such as Denmark, the systems vary significantly. These differences …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This article discusses the communicative aspects of foreign language teaching, particularly English, by tracing the development of teaching methods and theories alongside advances in linguistics. The early stage was characterized by the traditional grammar-translation approach, later shifting to structural methods such as the audio-lingual approach, and eventually transforming into generative and cognitive perspectives. The article also highlights teaching practices around the 1960s, which emphasized pattern practice to master grammatical structures through repetition and error correction. These paradigm shifts illustrate the transition from passive learning to viewing language as a tool for active communication. Thus, the article underscores that language teaching …

The Need For English For Academic Purposes : An Analysis Of Prenominal Modification In Economics, Pat Kamalani Cafferty
The Need For English For Academic Purposes : An Analysis Of Prenominal Modification In Economics, Pat Kamalani Cafferty
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This paper shows the complexity of noun phrases within an academic text and suggests, therefore, the complexity of the reading process that the traditional approach may not cover adequately. In this thesis, we will look at the complexity of the reading and comprehension processes through an analysis of prenominal modification found in Chapter 25 (a chapter chosen at random) of Paul Samuelson’s Economics. Samuelson’s Economics is a basic text chosen for this analysis because of its introductory level vocabulary and concepts and its wide use by students in the areas of Economics, Business, and the like. Although abundant studies have …

A Comparison Of The Reading Levels Of Children’S Books And The Age/Grade Levels Assigned To Them By Reviewers, Gail G. Graham
Graduate Research Papers
Media specialists of today face the challenging task of obtaining appropriate materials to meet the particular needs of the school. Numerous reviewing media are available for guidance in the selection of children's books. Along with evaluative comments, age or grade level ranges are provided for specific books. In an attempt to determine whether reading levels are included in the age/grade level ranges, the readability estimates of forty selected primary books were obtained using the Spache Readability Formula and compared to the age/grade levels assigned to them by Booklist and School Library Journal. Thirty-one or 77.7 percent of the books …

An Annotated Bibliography Of High Interest - Low Vocabulary Multimedia Materials For Junior High Students, Nancy Grimes
Graduate Research Papers
Two major areas of concern to the adolescent are behavior and emotions. They are interested in learning about genuine emotions and how people feel when they behave in certain ways. They also are concerned about the real world and seek to understand their own emotions, behaviors and life. Materials that provide for these particular interests will be appealing to the adolescent reader. Again, media specialists should be aware of any existing materials that deal with these concerns for possible purchase.
A Selected Bibliography Of Methods And Materials For Teaching Creative Writing, Linda R. Groen
A Selected Bibliography Of Methods And Materials For Teaching Creative Writing, Linda R. Groen
Graduate Research Papers
Creative writing can be seen, then, as an integral part of the curriculum, and the need to investigate it is readily apparent. The nature of the material available on creative writing necessitated that the investigation be handled in a somewhat different manner from that of the usual research project. Although a great deal has been written about creative writing, the emphasis has been on techniques, rationalities, and ideas. Few research studies have been conducted on the need for or design of creative writing programs. For this reason, and from comments made by authors such as Ms. Mueller, the author has …

All Master's Theses
The ability to read is no longer limited to the literal meaning of the word, but is increasingly dependent upon the reader's ability to recognize the style of writing, so that he knows whether to apply denotative or connotative meanings to what he is reading. Because reading needs have changed and will continue to change as rapidly as our culture changes, it is necessary to continuously develop and improve reading skills. The purpose of this study is to: (1) enumerate the reading study skills needed by college students, (2) describe the details of a reading study skills program, (3) and …
