Designing Curriculum The Fair Way, Lorraine Wallace
Designing Curriculum The Fair Way, Lorraine Wallace
The Utah English Journal
It was my second year as a teacher, my first year in a new school. In early August, I went to the building and introduced myself to the secretary. She was very pleasant as she escorted me to my new classroom. She opened the door, handed me the key, pointed to the cupboards where books were stored, and told me to let her know if I needed anything. Expecting some type of curriculum guide, I naively asked, “What am I supposed to teach?” “English, of course,” she answered with a laugh that continued as she went down the hall, back …
“Subvertising” As A Means Of Illustrating Transcendentalist Ideals, William Wright
“Subvertising” As A Means Of Illustrating Transcendentalist Ideals, William Wright
The Utah English Journal
In this article, I discuss the inspiration, rationale, methodology, and subsequent observations of an activity I designed for my secondary American Literature course that asks students to critically juxtapose modern advertisements through the lens of eighteenth-century Transcendental thinkers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Framed as a culminating activity at the end of our study of Transcendentalism, the activity’s intentions are twofold: to lead to a creative critique of the two-faced nature of advertising, and to serve as a bridge between what often seems, to students, like the outmoded writings of eighteenth-century philosophers and our modern cultural context.
Can An Eighth Grader Make An Impact?, Denée Tyler
Can An Eighth Grader Make An Impact?, Denée Tyler
The Utah English Journal
I see my students constantly composing: texts, notes to each other in class, silly sentences for grammar practice, lists of all varieties. I overhear the amusing and detailed things they tell each other, and I’m excited by their proficiency with words. But when they are asked to write for school, the work they turn in is generally less than stellar. The illusive quality of voice is often missing from their writing, and I often see weak sentence variety, poor or nonexistent paragraphing, and little attention given to reader courtesies such as grammar or spelling. There is a marked difference between …
Interlude I: Poetry In The Middle School Classroom, Gaylynn Parker
Interlude I: Poetry In The Middle School Classroom, Gaylynn Parker
The Utah English Journal
It is the end of week two, and I am watching my 7th grade students, new to junior high, struggling to navigate the halls, work their lockers, and organize papers as they go from class to class, teacher to teacher. Overwhelming. I know they will get the hang of it soon, but right now, their burdens hang heavily from their faces.
Interlude Iv: Imitation Poetry As A Celebration!, Gaylynn Parker
Interlude Iv: Imitation Poetry As A Celebration!, Gaylynn Parker
The Utah English Journal
It’s the end of the year—we’ve made it through and it’s time to celebrate! Gary Soto’s “Ode to Photographs” is light and silly and fun. To finish off fourth term, our imitation poem celebrates successful completion of 7th grade. I ask students to choose something small that gave them great pleasure and a cause to celebrate.
Interlude Iii: Imitation Poetry To Write Argument, Gaylynn Parker
Interlude Iii: Imitation Poetry To Write Argument, Gaylynn Parker
The Utah English Journal
During third term, we focus on writing argument, so at the end of the term, I have students write what I call an “argument poem.” We imitate Eve Merriam’s “Willow and Ginkgo” poem.
Book Review: Invisible Emmie, Kara Trammell
Book Review: Invisible Emmie, Kara Trammell
The Utah English Journal
Awkward, shy, thirteen year-old Emmie wishes nothing more than to be as confident and cool as her alter ego, Katie. As much fun as it would be to have Katie around in real life, Emmie has drawn her out of her own imagination. That is Emmie’s real passion—drawing. Unfortunately for Emmie, she realizes that being a good artist will not help her win friends or fall in with the “cool crowd” at school, and it especially will not catch the attention of the boy she has a crush on, either.
Book Review: The Lady Of The Lakes, Shannon Taylor
Book Review: The Lady Of The Lakes, Shannon Taylor
The Utah English Journal
Falling in love can be a tumultuous experience, what with utter elation in one moment and crushing insecurity in the next. In Josi Kilpack’s novel The Lady of the Lakes, the young Sir Walter Scott experiences this tumult of falling in love not once but twice, discovering that finding true love does not always happen as one would hope or expect. When Walter first sees Mina Stuart, a young heiress, he is immediately enthralled and devotes his heart to her entirely, writing to her for years and preparing for the day when he can ask for her hand in …
Book Review: The Inexplicable Logic Of My Life, Maddison Driggs
Book Review: The Inexplicable Logic Of My Life, Maddison Driggs
The Utah English Journal
For Sal, the protagonist of Benjamin Saenz’s novel, The Inexplicable Logic of My Life, nothing has ever been simple. Raised by his gay adoptive father, with the support of extended family and friends, the beginning of his senior year proves to be unusually challenging for Sal. A generally calm and collected boy, Sal finds that violent tendencies have begun arising in his life. Punch after punch, these violent encounters lead Sal to question who his biological father was — and more importantly, who he is himself.
Book Review: Under Locker And Key, Ethan Dunn
Book Review: Under Locker And Key, Ethan Dunn
The Utah English Journal
Does the end justify the means? Is breaking the rules acceptable if it means helping those who cannot defend themselves? These moral questions appear more commonly in adult literature. However, Allison K. Hymas addresses these issues, along with many others, in her debut novel for young adults, Under Locker and Key.

Combining Forces: Utilizing Expertise From Applied Linguistics And Flight Instruction For Better Atc Communications, Jennifer L. Roberts, Muhammad T. Omar
Combining Forces: Utilizing Expertise From Applied Linguistics And Flight Instruction For Better Atc Communications, Jennifer L. Roberts, Muhammad T. Omar
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
ATC communications are a complex mix of FAA phraseology and plain English. The dynamic demands of a pilot’s workload, simultaneously operating the aircraft, managing checklists, and maintaining situational awareness, make this domain of communication particularly challenging for many non-native English speakers. The dramatic growth of aviation in regions of the world in which English is not the native language has increased the need for flight training organizations to address and manage language issues. This paper outlines a new initiative at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to support flight students with the English language necessary for successful flight training. Two subject matter experts …
Effects Of Multimedia Instruction On L2 Acquisition Of High-Level, Low-Frequency English Vocabulary Words, Euna Cho
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The present study examined the effects of multimedia enhancement in video form in addition to textual information on L2 vocabulary instruction for high-level, low-frequency English words among Korean learners of English. Although input-based incidental learning of L2 vocabulary through extensive reading has been conventionally believed to be appropriate for high-frequency words, intentional or explicit vocabulary learning is suggested to be more sensible or realistic for the acquisition of low-frequency academic words. Multimedia support in foreign language instruction has revealed benefits in promoting direct teaching and explicit learning of L2 vocabulary; moreover, adding textual information to video seems to boost students’ …

The Importance Of Using Information Communication Technology For Learning And Teaching The English Language In Kurdistan Of Iraq, Nabaz Noori Kareem
The Importance Of Using Information Communication Technology For Learning And Teaching The English Language In Kurdistan Of Iraq, Nabaz Noori Kareem
English (TESOL) Master Theses
Kurdistan as a region in north of Iraq has undergone significant changes regarding its educational system, and using ICTs (information communication technologies) for teaching and learning English has been given a great role in the system. There are many researchers who wrote about the benefits and the challenges of using ICTs. As the term ICT includes many kinds of devices and applications, students and teachers in Kurdistan are using various types of ICTs inside or outside of the schools. Students and teachers use ICTs for teaching and learning the skills of the English language such as reading, writing, speaking, and …
The Iallt Language Center Evaluation Toolkit: Context, Development, And Usage, Elizabeth Lavolette, Angelika Kraemer
The Iallt Language Center Evaluation Toolkit: Context, Development, And Usage, Elizabeth Lavolette, Angelika Kraemer
Language Resource Center
In the summer of 2014, a committee composed of members of the International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT) began discussions toward accomplishing the following charge:
Design a tool that internal evaluation committees can use to evaluate and make recommendations for the improvement of their institution's language center. We emphasize the fact that it is the university appointed evaluation committee that will use this evaluation toolkit, not the language center directors themselves (although the LC Director should have input on how the toolkit should be deployed). Such evaluation committees might be composed of language department Chairs, TA/Language coordinators, Dean or …

"Y'All And All These Assessments Is A Little Bit Too Much" : The Effects Of High-Stakes Testing On Critical Literacy Pedagogy., Diana Lalata
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
As the United States of America becomes increasingly diverse, there is a need for teachers to embrace multiculturalism within the classroom. Shifting away from the traditional “banking model” of teaching, educational researchers call for a more critical approach—one in which teachers and students challenge dominant beliefs and practices of education. Foregrounded in those aims of cultural competence and critical consciousness, “critical literacy pedagogy” addresses the politicization of literacy education and employs conscious curriculum and teaching strategies to empower marginalized voices. Although a number of case studies on critical literacy pedagogy show considerable promise in disrupting dominant discourse and developing cultural …
Breaking The Cycle Of Silence : The Significance Of Anya Seton's Historical Fiction., Lindsey Marie Okoroafo (Jesnek)
Breaking The Cycle Of Silence : The Significance Of Anya Seton's Historical Fiction., Lindsey Marie Okoroafo (Jesnek)
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the feminist significance of Anya Seton’s historical novels, My Theodosia (1941), Katherine (1954), and The Winthrop Woman (1958). The two main goals of this project are to 1.) identify and explain the reasons why Seton’s historical novels have not received the scholarly attention they are due, and 2.) to call attention to the ways in which My Theodosia, Katherine, and The Winthrop Woman offer important feminist interventions to patriarchal social order. Ultimately, I argue that My Theodosia, Katherine, and The Winthrop Woman deserve more scholarly attention because they are significant contributions to women’s …
Embracing Diversity In Dialect: Incorporating Informal Language Into The Classroom, Stephanie R. Jackson
Embracing Diversity In Dialect: Incorporating Informal Language Into The Classroom, Stephanie R. Jackson
Student Scholar Showcase
Long-standing myths about language have often affected teacher instruction in the classroom. Particularly in minority communities, teachers have faced difficulties educating students whose dialect varies greatly from Standard American English (SAE). In linguistics, dialect is defined as a variety of language associated with a particular social group. Many of the difficulties faced in education have arisen from misconceptions that certain dialects of English, and by extension, certain social groups, are inferior to others. All languages have one dialect that is considered the ‘standard’ or the most prestigious, so that factor cannot be changed. However, the way in which non-standard dialects …

Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin
Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin
English Faculty Publications
This chapter examines U.S.-based approaches to curricular revision of the Rhetoric and Writing Minor at the American University in Cairo (AUC) through analysis of faculty interviews and relevant artifacts. Through this analysis, and consideration of AUC’s development in the context of changes in Egypt, the chapter argues that U.S.-based curricular approaches satisfied various local needs among AUC’s writing faculty and students. These findings complicate claims within international composition studies, which are concerned with non-reflective export of U.S. linguistic, pedagogical and program models into international sites. This chapter calls for expanding the perspective of U.S.-based approaches to composition studies to include …

Historical Representation Of Jackie Robinson Within Primary And Intermediate Level Children's Literature, Amy Minor
Masters Theses
Educators today meet national and state initiatives by spending approximately half their time on non-fiction literature. Starting as early as primary grades students are to analyze multiple texts on the same historical topic. Student's reading levels vary; consequently, trade books can be used to reach each individual child. Due to this, trade book usage has increased. Research indicates trade books can contain possible historical misrepresentations. Few studies have been completed, therefore more research is necessary. My research examined the historical representation of Jackie Robinson within trade books for primary and intermediate grades. After determining events in reading the historical research …
The Effect Of Speech Elicitation Method On Second Language Phonemic Accuracy, Nicole Carrasquel
The Effect Of Speech Elicitation Method On Second Language Phonemic Accuracy, Nicole Carrasquel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study, a One-Group Posttest-Only Repeated-Measures Design, examined the effect of speech elicitation method on second language (L2) phonemic accuracy of high functional load initial phonemes found in frequently occurring nouns in American English. This effect was further analyzed by including the variable of first language (L1) to determine if L1 moderated any effects found. The data consisted of audio recordings of 61 adult English learners (ELs) enrolled in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses at a large, public, post-secondary institution in the United States. Phonemic accuracy was judged by two independent raters as either approximating a standard American …
Music And Words: Connecting The Love Of Music With Language, Eileen P. Kennedy, Raymond Torres- Santos
Music And Words: Connecting The Love Of Music With Language, Eileen P. Kennedy, Raymond Torres- Santos
Publications and Research
Children from different cultures have a natural affinity for rhymes, rhythm and music. Imagine if students were able, from the beginning of their education and experiences with academic writing and literacy, to access their unconscious and original selves from which to create their writing. The study of music can help to access this aware, inventive side that can enhance anyone’s writing. As an early childhood writing teacher and a composition teacher, we draw on our experiences with young children with words and music. We examine the relationship between music and words in an effort to bring the primitive drive of …

A Study Of The Intelligibility, Comprehensibility And Interpretability Of Standard Marine Communication Phrases As Perceived By Chinese Mariners, Lillian Christine Holland
Dissertations and Theses
Worldwide, mariners use a variety of English as an International Language known as Maritime English regardless of the first language spoken by the crew or port in which they enter. English knowledge and ability is therefore critical to a mariner's livelihood at sea and is also mandated by the International Maritime Organization. The ability to understand and be understood is paramount to safety at sea. This study investigated which accents of English a subset of Chinese mariners found easy or difficult to understand. The data from 39 Chinese mariners who listened to 8 Standard Marine Communications phrases was analyzed. The …
