An Embodied Agent Helps Anxious Students In Mathematics Learning, Yanghee Kim, Jeffrey L. Thayne, Quan Wei

Mathematics anxiety is known to be detrimental to mathematics learning. This study explored if an embodied agent could be used to help alleviate student anxiety in classrooms. To examine this potential, agent-guided algebra lessons were developed, in which an animated agent was equipped with prescriptive instructional guidance and anxiety treating messages. The lessons were deployed in regular mathematics classrooms, one lesson per day over a week, with 138 boys and girls in the 9th grade in the United States. After taking the weeklong agent-based lessons, students decreased in their mathematics anxiety (p = .042) and increased in mathematics learning …

Every Day You Are Improving: How College Students View The Educational Impact Of World Of Warcraft, Nariman Alawami, Heng-Yu Ku
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of the study was to explore college students’ experiences with playing World of Warcraft (WoW) and their views on the application of WoW in educational settings. A qualitative case study design was used to interview three participants who were selected purposively from a Midwestern university. Findings revealed that players thought that playing WoW was fun, relaxing, motivating, but sometimes almost to the point of addiction. The findings also support student perceptions of generalization of teamwork, cooperating, socializing, academic skills, and time management skills learned and practiced in playing WoW to academic settings. VoiceThread comes to the rescue to promote speaking, listening and learning in asynchronous settings and is an especially powerful tool in the Human Services and Communication online classes at Ottawa University. Its web-based platform can be used as a stand-alone tool, or can integrate many of the major LMS systems. Participants can interact with multimedia presentations by recording audio (microphone or from a phone line) comments, video (webcam) comments, and by uploading an audio file from their device. This session will explore how Ottawa University uses class debates, student presentations, persuasive appeals, and class discussions to engage students.

When an instructor is confronted with developing an online course based on Quality Matters it can daunting! The Quality Matters rubric is developed from an instructional designer’s perspective with underlying concepts unfamiliar to some faculty members. The School of Nursing at Washburn University is in the process of rolling out a fully online program for RN-to-BSN students. As they stress the need for 21st century learning, governments recognize the importance of innovation and creativity in schools and invest resources to develop learning environments that foster these qualities. More research on how ASL/English bilingual schools for the deaf educate hearing families to apply bilingual education methodology at home is warranted. Given the rising use of technology in schools, its role within these family education programs was the primary focus. Thirty-two participants from 22 different schools completed an online, researcher-developed survey. Follow-up, online interviews were conducted with 7 participants, and artifacts were collected from 10 schools. Qualitative and quantitative descriptions express the study’s results based on technology used as an informational and influential tool, counseling and coping tool, diversity tool, and program evaluation tool. This study utilized an industrial ethnographic framework to perform a document analysis on educational classroom documents presently used at a single small, private boarding school. This school, where students are given an individualized curriculum and experience immersed in technology, frequently uses Google Apps for Education to share electronic documents used in the classroom.
Qualitative information was gathered using an instrument created for this study, the Educational Document Design and Information Evaluation (EDDIE) form. EDDIE forms in the areas of Supplemental Documents, Adopted Textbooks, and Lesson Plans were used to evaluate presently-used classroom documents with current information design and educational trends. …

The ubiquity of online programs in higher education requires continued focus on designing instructional environments that improve students’ learning. We examine students’ perceptions of sense of community and learning, as well as academic achievement, using grades obtained from a final project and participation in asynchronous discussion forums. Findings indicate a significant correlation between perceived learning and the sense of community connectedness subscale. Although sense of community is closely associated with interactions, the results did not show a significant relationship between the sense of community and the discussions achievement variable. Individual strategies to increase response rate and survey completion have been extensively researched. Recently, efforts have been made to investigate a combination of interventions to yield better response rates for web-based surveys. This study examined the effects of four different survey invitation conditions on response rate. From a large metropolitan university in the West, a group of 1,598 selected students were randomly assigned to four groups, each of which received a different version of the invitation email to participate in a survey of campus technology needs. Online learning and the use of multimedia is a quickly growing element of higher education. This experimental research study examines five common audio and video presentation designs to inform evidence-based practices that can be applied by instructional designers as they develop content for online learners. Specifically, this experiment compares instructor-only, slides-only, dual-windows, video-switching, and superimposed-slides multimedia designs in terms of learning effectiveness, perceived instructor credibility, instructor immediacy, and cognitive load created by each design. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a game-based app (Motion Math: Fraction) to help students with Mathematics Learning Disabilities (MLD) to gain fraction skills including comparison, estimation, and word problem solving in an after school program.
