International Society for Technology in Education Standards for Administrators (ISTE-A, 2009) has been published for six years and but few studies have been done to indicate digital leadership indicators. This qualitative study aims to explore digital leadership indicators in the context of K-12 education based on ISTE-A standards. Results show that visionary leadership is indicated as integrated technology vision and technology plan support by all stakeholders. Indicators of digital age learning culture include sufficient devices, technology modeling, and effective technology utilization. Digital learning opportunities and digital learning community are indicators of professional development. Indicators of systemic improvement include maximized learning …

Grade Point Level, Reading Fluency, And Perceived Digital Reading Ability Of Video Game Players And Nonplayers, Soonhwa Seok, Boaventura Dacosta

This study compared grade point level, silent contextual reading fluency, and perceived digital reading ability of 1,206 South Korean video game players and nonplayers in grades 9 through 12. The findings strengthen results reported in the literature while also contributing new information. Nonplayers had better grades, a finding that supports previous research showing that gameplay can negatively influence academic performance. Nonplayers were better readers, a finding in disagreement with studies showing that Internet use, to include video game play, can help with reading performance. While players held higher views of themselves regarding their digital reading ability, these perceptions were not …

As mobile technologies become more affordable and more advanced in function, researchers suggest that using mobile apps to assist English language learning are appropriate. This three-step evaluation study (designing a theory-driven rubric, selecting apps, and evaluating the apps) aims to investigate and evaluate the affordances of English language learning mobile apps for adult learners. The results of this evaluation study contribute to the literature of mobile learning targeting adult learners, and also broaden the knowledge body of integrating mobile learning into English Language Learning (ELL) classes.

The Ozarks Educational Research Initiative, a consortium of 19 Southwest Missouri public school districts, partnered with Missouri State University’s Institute for School Improvement from 2011 – 2015 to investigate effective practices for utilizing one-to-one digital technologies in the classroom. The focus of this descriptive study was to determine whether a one-to-one technology initiative would result in improving any of the “four Cs” (communication, collaboration, creativity, or critical thinking) of the Framework for 21st Century Learning. This study focused on the integration of technologies in regular science teaching within the pedagogical framework of modeling-based instruction (MBI), a well-established instructional method in science education, and aimed to identify new trends of technology integration in MBI, explore the particular features (Interactivity, Collaboration, and Scaffolding) and affordances of new technologies, and examine the effect of technology-supported MBI on students learning outcomes. Comparison Of Online And Onsite Students’ Learning Outcomes And Experiences In A Massively Open Online Course In China, Weichao Chen, Jiyou Jia

This paper compares the achievements and learning experiences of onsite and online students participating in a Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) in China. Altogether 192 Chinese students learned face-to-face, and another 311 Chinese learners participated online. In regard to learning performance, onsite learners had a lower attrition rate than the online students. However, for learners who had completed all their learning assignments, no significant difference was detected between the onsite and online participants’ average assignment scores, and they were equally likely to win two of the learning awards. This study validated items for assistive technology (AT) evaluation and, accordingly, identified dimensions underlying AT practices and the quality of AT outcomes from the perspective of professors preparing preservice teachers for careers in special education. The statistical approach of multidimensional scaling was used, in which the proximity of similarity and dissimilarity between items was compared. Participants rated 4,851 comparisons, resulting in a dataset of 19,404 pairwise comparisons (4,851*4). Stress and fit measures showed that the normalized raw stress was .07136, S-stress was .19190, dispersion was .92864, and Tucker’s coefficient of congruence was .96366. Learning analytics has been an emerging trend in education especially in higher education. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of learning analytics in higher education through an overview of current research topics of learning analytics in higher education, significant results of previous studies, and implications in future research. Results show that research topics of learning analytics in higher education fall into five categories: learning, teaching, administration, technology development, and digital citizenship. More studies are required in learning prediction and data variety.

This paper employs learning analytics to determine the relationships between digital activism action categories. Organizing that took place on Twitter in response to the shooting death of Tony Robinson, an African American teenager, was guided by the digital activism typology developed by Penney and Dadas (2014). The results yielded a positive correlation between seeking connections with activists and providing face-to-face updates from protests, which suggests people who seek connections with activists are likely to participate in live protests. This qualitative study investigates factors that affect pre-service teachers’ electronic portfolio adoption process. Data is collected through in-depth interviews and document analysis. Factors affecting pre-service teachers’ adoption of electronic portfolio include school requirements, social pressures, time constraints, previous experiences, family consciousness, and personality. Findings suggest that successful electronic portfolio implementation rely on consideration of both external and internal aspects such as time, motivation, interaction, and technological skills.

This paper reports the findings of an exploratory study that examined two secondary schools: one from a big city in eastern China and the other from a middle-sized city in eastern Canada. Data were collected using a paper-based survey questionnaire that included multiplechoice, open-ended, and scaled questions. Responses indicate that ownership and access to ICT devices were quite similar between Canadian and Chinese participants, but the learning and use of ICT between the two groups of participants differed due to various reasons. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between students’ perception of teachers’ instruction, course satisfaction, and student academic achievement. The data were extracted from TsingHua Education Online (THEOL) Management Information System (MIS) and analyzed via structuring equation modeling. The researchers hypothesized student ratings of instruction were affected by their achievement and course satisfaction. The results confirmed a positive relationship between course satisfaction and student ratings of instruction, but did not find direct effect of student academic achievement on their ratings of teachers’ instruction. This paper reports findings from a case study with mixed methods data collection analysis to examine the application of blended learning in accelerated post-baccalaureate teacher education at the program level. One hundred and sixty-seven recent graduates from a chosen teacher education program participated in the study by completing an online survey. Evaluating Online Social Presence: An Overview Of Social Presence Assessment, Guoqiang Cui

As an important variable in online learning environment, the construct of social presence has been widely studied by researchers in order to investigate students’ online communication behavior and their related performance. This study will provide an overview of the assessment of social presence throughout its historical development. In this review, both primary subjective and objectives measures of social presence will be introduced, followed by criticisms towards current social presence measures, and offer recommendations for future development of social presence measurement tools.
