I Want To Make You Cry: An Emotional And Philosophical Inquiry In 'Parrallel Lines' Through Montage, Affect And Empathy., Frehley Silvester

Postgraduate

This project consists of two components, a creative artefact, and written exegesis. The creative artefact is a short film script called 'Parallel Lines' which explores a conversation between a mother and her daughter after the death of the mother.

In my creative practice, cinema is the most impactful medium of generating meaning. I would go as far to state that cinema is a necessary medium in order to explore human emotions. Representation is known to impact audiences and it is for this reason that I have chosen cinema to be the mechanism to examine in depth within the work.

The Eternal Flame: Creating Visual Storytelling Through Emotion Design, Rebekka Cottam Aug 2024

The Eternal Flame: Creating Visual Storytelling Through Emotion Design, Rebekka Cottam

Postgraduate

This creative practice research project explores the use of emotion design techniques through visual storytelling in the form of a 68-page graphic novel design and an accompanying exegesis. The research examines emotion theory, exploring how a visual story can comprise of emotion design elements through techniques within shape language, emotive signals, the semiotics of colour, genre, symbolism, and emotive storytelling structures.

Via a creative component, the research documents the practical application of the theoretical concepts using the form of a graphic novel, highlighting the importance of the emotional affect on an audience experience.

Submersive Sounds: An Ecoacoustic Exploration Of Aesthetic Experience, Kyle Lane Aug 2024

Submersive Sounds: An Ecoacoustic Exploration Of Aesthetic Experience, Kyle Lane

Postgraduate

In my exegesis, I explore the convergence of ecoacoustics, environmental aesthetics and aesthetic experience within the backdrop of creative practice research. This research aims to investigate how sound can enhance aesthetic experiences of nature and engage listeners to foster stronger connections with nature. I draw on the philosophies of John Dewey, Arnold Berleant, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty to examine the practice of fieldwork, reflection and ecoacoustics and if these methods can create soundscapes that elicit an embodied, sensory engagement with nature.

Fieldwork is a significant contributing factor in this research as it is employed as part of the creative process and …

Saltwater And Dirt: Using Magical Spaces For Queer Re-Worlding, Ramana Dienes-Browning May 2024

Saltwater And Dirt: Using Magical Spaces For Queer Re-Worlding, Ramana Dienes-Browning

Postgraduate

This research project is a work of autotheory situated under the umbrella of Queer Theory. The work encompasses a theoretical component and a short performance art film and the two should be viewed as part of the whole. The creative practice has been used as a device to speak to the theory and bring it to life. The theory has informed, and homogenised with, the making of the art film. Through the course of this creative research project I found my way to a queer becoming through the comingling of magical phenomena, composting (Haraway, 2016, p.97) and hydrofeminism (Neimanis, 2012). …

The Way Of Madness, Sacha Lamont Apr 2024

The Way Of Madness, Sacha Lamont

Postgraduate

This study explores the cognitive process of creating a design for a single Tarot card, concentrating on the relationship between the visual (non-verbal, spatial) and verbal (linear) elements involved in the process. The research uncovered that linear and non-linear (visual) cognitive strategies are employed in synergy during the conception and creation of the artwork. The most notable result of the research is that immediate, pre-reflective and non-verbal experiencing has undeniable primacy over verbal, conceptual thinking. Verbalising thoughts is interchangeable with analytical, critical, symbolic, and linear cognitive strategy (“rational”). However, the context, interrelationships, and, ultimately, meaning are provided by integrating the …

Rising From The Dust: (In)Visible Women In Australian Mining, Angela Webb Jan 2024

Rising From The Dust: (In)Visible Women In Australian Mining, Angela Webb

Postgraduate

Artivism (Art + Activism) has effectively raised awareness, challenged societal norms, and catalysed change through creative expression. Deepwell (2020) noted that “art engages with feminist politics” and “feminist politics reinvents art”. Deepwell's statement emphasises the mutual influence and transformative power between art and feminist politics. Art serves as a vehicle for expressing and advancing feminist ideologies, while feminist politics, in turn, reshapes artistic practices, content, and perspectives, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and diverse art discourse. Composing An Identity Between Worlds : Music’S Role In Exploring The Self, Sarah Homeh Aug 2023

Composing An Identity Between Worlds : Music’S Role In Exploring The Self, Sarah Homeh

Postgraduate

This exegesis explores identity and cultural issues in contemporary Australia through music composition. It is based on experiences of a second-generation female migrant. This research includes a creative component that fuses Assyrian musical elements with Western genres such as jazz, neo-soul and nu-jazz. This written exegesis employs an autoethnographic and creative practice-based approach to examine the multifaceted intersections of music, ethnicity, and gender.

This exegesis navigates the landscape of hybridity, feminism, representation, and musicalisation, probing the transformative role of music and art in articulating the diasporic experience of women. A methodological fusion of autoethnography and creative practice guides the research, …

Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements Nov 2022

Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements

Postgraduate

The representation of disability in creative media is problematic. There have been several tests proposed that analyse disability representation within a media text, in an attempt to determine if a media text represents disability appropriately. In this thesis, I discuss several existing tests of disability representation within media texts, identifying problems in each. I propose a new test for disability representation to address these problems. I then apply the test described in this thesis to media texts within the spheres of film, television, fictional literature, comics and games. Using the qualitative method of autoethnography combined with discourse analysis, I will …

Writing Myths: Interpreting And Translating Meaning, Naomi Robinson Dec 2021

Writing Myths: Interpreting And Translating Meaning, Naomi Robinson

Postgraduate

Myths and stories are integral communication devices that cross both lived and shared experience while manifesting through internal and external meaning-making processes. To determine the nature of myths in and as popular culture, this project sought to use practise-led methods. In addition to storytelling and thematic analysis, this project involved the interpretation and adaptation of an ancient myth into a modern television series. By considering television shows as conduits of socio-political agendas, the creative process culminating in this exegesis highlighted how the perpetual influence of myths through knowledge, reference, and experience can be manipulated to drive cultural change.

Identity Before Production: An Analysis Of Female Asian Representation Within Screenwriting, Kim Larkin Oct 2021

Identity Before Production: An Analysis Of Female Asian Representation Within Screenwriting, Kim Larkin

Postgraduate

This thesis investigates how representation and self-representation are constructed in screenplays. Film scholarship has primarily focused on the constructions of identities by examining the exhibited film product. The screenplay, which forms the foundation of the film text, is rarely examined for its impact on issues of representation and self-representation. Nelmes and Selbo’s ‘Women Screenwriters: An International Guide’ only addresses representation twice and does not reference self-representation within its 900 pages (Nelmes & Selbo, 2015).

Feminist film criticism of cinema has been heavily critical of the patriarchal male gaze in response to positioning women within film. The works of De Lauretis …
