This project consists of two components, a creative artefact, and written exegesis. The creative artefact is a short film script called 'Parallel Lines' which explores a conversation between a mother and her daughter after the death of the mother.

In my creative practice, cinema is the most impactful medium of generating meaning. I would go as far to state that cinema is a necessary medium in order to explore human emotions. Representation is known to impact audiences and it is for this reason that I have chosen cinema to be the mechanism to examine in depth within the work.

This creative practice research project explores the use of emotion design techniques through visual storytelling in the form of a 68-page graphic novel design and an accompanying exegesis. The research examines emotion theory, exploring how a visual story can comprise of emotion design elements through techniques within shape language, emotive signals, the semiotics of colour, genre, symbolism, and emotive storytelling structures.

Via a creative component, the research documents the practical application of the theoretical concepts using the form of a graphic novel, highlighting the importance of the emotional affect on an audience experience.

Submersive Sounds: An Ecoacoustic Exploration Of Aesthetic Experience, Kyle Lane

In my exegesis, I explore the convergence of ecoacoustics, environmental aesthetics and aesthetic experience within the backdrop of creative practice research. This research aims to investigate how sound can enhance aesthetic experiences of nature and engage listeners to foster stronger connections with nature. I draw on the philosophies of John Dewey, Arnold Berleant, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty to examine the practice of fieldwork, reflection and ecoacoustics and if these methods can create soundscapes that elicit an embodied, sensory engagement with nature.

The work encompasses a theoretical component and a short performance art film and the two should be viewed as part of the whole. This study explores the cognitive process of creating a design for a single Tarot card, concentrating on the relationship between the visual (non-verbal, spatial) and verbal (linear) elements involved in the process. The research uncovered that linear and non-linear (visual) cognitive strategies are employed in synergy during the conception and creation of the artwork. The most notable result of the research is that immediate, pre-reflective and non-verbal experiencing has undeniable primacy over verbal, conceptual thinking. Verbalising thoughts is interchangeable with analytical, critical, symbolic, and linear cognitive strategy (“rational”). This exegesis explores identity and cultural issues in contemporary Australia through music composition. It is based on experiences of a second-generation female migrant. This research includes a creative component that fuses Assyrian musical elements with Western genres such as jazz, neo-soul and nu-jazz. This written exegesis employs an autoethnographic and creative practice-based approach to examine the multifaceted intersections of music, ethnicity, and gender.

The representation of disability in creative media is problematic. There have been several tests proposed that analyse disability representation within a media text, in an attempt to determine if a media text represents disability appropriately. In this thesis, I discuss several existing tests of disability representation within media texts, identifying problems in each. Myths and stories are integral communication devices that cross both lived and shared experience while manifesting through internal and external meaning-making processes. To determine the nature of myths in and as popular culture, this project sought to use practise-led methods. In addition to storytelling and thematic analysis, this project involved the interpretation and adaptation of an ancient myth into a modern television series. By considering television shows as conduits of socio-political agendas, the creative process culminating in this exegesis highlighted how the perpetual influence of myths through knowledge, reference, and experience can be manipulated to drive cultural change.

This thesis investigates how representation and self-representation are constructed in screenplays. Film scholarship has primarily focused on the constructions of identities by examining the exhibited film product. The screenplay, which forms the foundation of the film text, is rarely examined for its impact on issues of representation and self-representation. Nelmes and Selbo’s ‘Women Screenwriters: An International Guide’ only addresses representation twice and does not reference self-representation within its 900 pages (Nelmes & Selbo, 2015).
