The Real World Of Teaching In Hadrian’S Virtual Villa, Lynne A. Kvapil

A virtual 3D simulation of Hadrian's Imperial Villa at Tivoli, created as part of the Hadrian's Villa Project, was the centerpiece of a course module that combined Problem-based Learning with virtual world technology. The module asked students to use different learning environments, like the virtual villa, to solve ancient world problems focused on the life of the emperor Hadrian. The benefits and challenges of combining PBL with virtual world technology in the classroom are discussed here. Sample lesson plans from the course are also included.

Although the term “social justice” itself is commonly attributed to a 19th century Catholic theologian, the concept of social justice and imperatives to work toward its realization are integral to virtually all religious and spiritual traditions. Religious traditions have historically shaped institutions and power relationships in profound ways and continue to do so alongside the rise of the “nones” (those with no religious affiliation). Moreover, the complex interplay between religious and other cultural, racial, ethnic, lingual, political, and economic forces render a critical social analysis that leaves out religious factors woefully incomplete. I used these survey and interview instruments in an IRB-approved investigation of the state of writing in the Health Sciences major at James Madison University, which took place during the Spring 2015 semester. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to assist the University Writing Center in developing and facilitating evidence-based responses to the discipline-specific writing needs of Health Sciences students. The 20 study participants were faculty members who taught in the Health Sciences major. Each took an online Qualtrics survey and participated an in-person follow-up interview with a predetermined set of questions. The disciplinary boundaries between history and sociocultural anthropology have become increasingly blurred in recent decades, a trend reflected in scholarly work that engages with both fields, as well as dual-degree graduate programmes at top U.S. research universities. Pedagogy For A Wicked World: The Value And Hazards Of A Transdisciplinary, Dialogue-Driven, Community Engagged Classroom Model, Danielle Lake

This presentation provides a number of strategies for instructors interested in a more participatory, transdisciplinary, and experiential educational model in order to foster real-world change around our high-stakes, complex public problems. By utilizing soft system’s thinking in addition to a feminist pragmatist methodology students can successfully collaborate with community partners and integrate across their disciplinary expertise in order to co-develop and implement action-plans with community stakeholders. Given the value of this work, but also the challenges, this session also highlights the potential pitfalls of working to prepare students for a messy, iterative process of collaboratively learning-by-doing in a “wicked” world.
