The impact of COVID-19 has had implications for every single lifestyle and business (Sharma et al., 2022). Not only did it impact the economy, but the service industry took the brunt of it. The industries most affected by COVID-19 over the period January 2020 to January 2022 included “airlines, automobiles, energy equipment and services, hotels-restaurants-leisure, and specialty retail (Vidovic, 2022). When airlines and recreation parts of the industry did not return to pre- pandemic levels in November of 2021, the United States saw a reflection of the appeal for more local tourism (Linn et al., 2022). Local tourism, including restaurants, …

Group projects are frequently used in higher education courses to facilitate collaboration; however, group effectiveness can vary greatly, resulting in individual stress and poor academic performance. To alleviate this, some instructors utilize peer evaluation. While instructors are well intentioned these rubrics rarely, if ever, are grounded in the constructs of collaboration that they wish to foster. This research poster reports on an ongoing project to develop a self and peer evaluation grounded in psychological capital and emotional intelligence, the EQ-PSY Evaluation. These constructs were selected based on their dimensions for individual and social capacities to capture effective teamwork.

Money Path: A Tool For College, Financial, And Career Planning, Carl Gahala

Journal of the North American Management Society

Numerous websites and applications are available to help college students select a major and future career. Some of these tools ask students about their interests and then make recommendations about occupations that might be aligned with their aptitudes and interests. However, most tools do not inform students about the amount of money they will need to borrow to obtain their college degree, nor do they help students understand the impact that student loan debt will have on their future budgets. This paper discusses another unique financial literacy tool called Money Path, which allows students to develop a personal budget that …

Why Students Select Their College Major: An Investigative Study, Kate N. Matthews, Diane R. Edmondson, Lucy Matthews

Atlantic Marketing Journal

With the decline in the number of traditional college-aged students, understanding the degree selection process is important for departments, colleges, and universities alike. For students, selecting the proper major early is also beneficial since it reduces time in school and tuition costs. Therefore, a better understanding of the degree selection process is worthwhile. Survey data was collected from 1,177 undergraduates at a southeastern U.S. university. Survey questions included major selection influences and other attitude and demographic items. The highest ranked reason is interest and passion followed by fit with personality type. This was similar for students who changed majors. External …

Data Analytics And Compliance With Aacsb Accounting Technology Standards: A Critically Appraised Topic, Gregory J. Tanzola

Engaged Management ReView

As technology accelerates and gains importance in the accounting industry, the inclusion of technology in accounting curricula also becomes more important. Indeed, this inclusion is a requirement of the academic accounting accrediting body, The American Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). However, neither minimal guidance nor standards for meeting the technology requirements currently exist. This topic paper examines how academic accounting departments may address data analytics as a component of the AACSB’s technology requirement. The analysis synthesizes peer-reviewed articles exploring how data analytics are being integrated into accounting curricula and identifies three main concerns: (1) the need for …

Students' Perceptions Of Professional Short-Messaging Education In Undergraduate Courses, Seth S. Frei, Allison M. Alford, Ashly B. Smith

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

The popularity of short-messaging formats, like text and chat, is on the rise in the workplace with many employees preferring this style over long-form options like email. While many businesses expect employees to communicate using short messages, students may be ill-equipped to effectively use these methods due to a lack of formal training. This study sets out to understand students’ experience, confidence, and education related to professional short messaging. Results indicate a correlation between confidence and experience levels in writing text and chat messages. Further, the participants who indicated they had training on writing short messages, indicated they learned it …

Learning In Context: Exploring Student Cognitive Maps, Kevin Davis, Eric J. Tucker Sep 2023

Learning In Context: Exploring Student Cognitive Maps, Kevin Davis, Eric J. Tucker

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This study examines how concept-by-concept learning can provide students with a robust conceptual cognitive map for the area under study. In-context learning indicates that students understand how individual concepts are related and apply to real-world situations. Our results show that insights can be gained from understanding the degree of in-context learning in a course. Faculty can use this information to guide instruction in real time and make curriculum adjustments. This approach is also helpful because it can be replicated in any course to develop knowledge about students’ conceptual understanding.

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

The mission identity and intellectual tradition of Vincentian schools of business affords a unique opportunity for these institutions to produce business leaders prepared to address systemic breakdowns in business ethics and corporate social responsibility. In order to achieve this goal, this paper proposes the HEET (Hire Encourage Equip Train) framework for mission integration. At the heart of the HEET framework is a recognition that successful mission integration requires college-level administrators who promote mission integration throughout the curriculum and center its importance within the strategic operations of the school of business. As every component of HEET centers on developing an industry-leading …

Justice House At Niagara University: An Emerging Approach To Teaching Vincentian Social Justice During And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kevin A. Hinkley

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Some commentators have predicted that the disruptive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will transform the landscape of higher education in the United States. For example, Scott Galloway, Professor of Marketing at NYU Stern School of Business, predicts that most U.S. colleges and universities will either “go out of business or become a shadow of themselves.” Professor Galloway argues that the few elite universities that survive will enter into corporate partnerships with Big Tech companies such as Google, Apple, and Meta. From this perspective, for the overwhelming majority of U.S. colleges and universities there won’t be a “post-pandemic recovery”— at least …

Mental Health Stigma As A Sociocultural Complex Within Panamanian Culture, Arielle Sanders

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

The purpose of this study is to examine mental health stigma within the sociocultural context shared by members of the Panamanian population. Mental health stigma is complex because it manifests itself differently according to the cultural context in which it is experienced. Culture informs individual beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes regarding how a person should live within their immediate household and within society. This social conditioning is accomplished through a variety of means, including the passing down of social norms, traditions, and customs. Ultimately, these cultural characteristics encourage socially acceptable behaviors while simultaneously discouraging undesirable behaviors in order to maintain group …

Cross-Cutting Skills: The Role Of Major, Maureen Snow Andrade, Eugene Seeley, Ron Miller Aug 2023

Cross-Cutting Skills: The Role Of Major, Maureen Snow Andrade, Eugene Seeley, Ron Miller

International Journal for Business Education

Employers want recent college graduates prepared with skills that cut across majors, such as written and oral communication, teamwork, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and applying knowledge in real-life situations. What is largely unknown is if some fields of study lend themselves to producing these desired skills over others. This is particularly relevant to schools of business, which strive to help students develop professional career skills and often emphasize a range of practical, hands-on, engaged learning activities. This study focused on obtaining the insights of hiring managers about desired skills and areas of study that prepare students with these skills. Survey …

A Systematic Mapping Study On Gamification Applications For Undergraduate Cybersecurity Education, Sherri Weitl-Harms, Adam Spanier, John Hastings, Matthew Rokusek

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Gamification in education presents a number of benefits that can theoretically facilitate higher engagement and motivation among students when learning complex, technical concepts. As an innovative, high-potential educational tool, many educators and researchers are attempting to implement more effective gamification into undergraduate coursework. Cyber Security Operations (CSO) education is no exception. CSO education traditionally requires comprehension of complex concepts requiring a high level of technical and abstract thinking. By properly applying gamification to complex CSO concepts, engagement in students should see an increase. While an increase is expected, no comprehensive study of CSO gamification applications (GA) has yet been undertaken …

College Professors As Servant Leaders: Promoting Student Dignity In The Classroom, Garfield R. Benjamin May 2023

College Professors As Servant Leaders: Promoting Student Dignity In The Classroom, Garfield R. Benjamin

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

The COVID-19 pandemic brought great disparities to society as a whole. In the education sector, teachers were forced to deliver content while exploring new ways to do so through new or unfamiliar technologies, working in various modalities, while keeping students engaged. This change called for instructors to be flexible, be aware, have empathy, have foresight, build community, communicate, and care for students in this new, mostly virtual, environment. This research explores the idea of college educators as servant leaders by examining definitions of servant leadership, exploring how a servant leader empowers those they lead in times of crisis, examining implications …

Servant Leadership: A Powerful Paradigm For Effective Leadership In Africa, Franklin Ezeorah May 2023

Servant Leadership: A Powerful Paradigm For Effective Leadership In Africa, Franklin Ezeorah

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Lack of good leadership is the greatest undoing of African progress. Unfortunately, good leadership for Africans is not just mirroring the western leadership system but adapting to a style of leadership that is attractive to African people’s way of life and effective for African people’s development and wellbeing. Because leadership is a crucial determining factor for the success of all economic, political, and organizational structures, determining an essential leadership style for a nation-state largely depends on how suitable the style can fit into the complex challenges facing such a nation-state. Considering the viability and profitability of the servant leadership style …

Servant Leadership And Student-Worker Satisfaction, Shweta Sinha May 2023

Servant Leadership And Student-Worker Satisfaction, Shweta Sinha

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

There are several studies that show that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to immense physical and mental health distress. Not only did it impact people’s health but it posed a threat to their financial and professional security. The pandemic, in addition to the several socio-economic challenges, resulted in the restructuring of the corporate work environment. It gave rise to work-from-home culture which eventually became the preferred mode of work for many people. However, companies eventually started calling people back into work reducing the flexibility in schedule that was previously available to employees working from home. As a result, the post-pandemic …

Spirituality Of The Servant Leader, Sally Duffy May 2023

Spirituality Of The Servant Leader, Sally Duffy

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Reflecting on the words and lived actions of philosophers, theologians and others in the Catholic tradition can inform the Spirituality of a Servant Leader. Thoughtful considerations of the crucified today and personal examination of reader towards systems and structures of oppression should inform those in leadership. Members and alumni of a Vincentian university must recall and embody the leadership styles of Jesus Christ and St. Vincent De Paul in their own places of influence to make for a more just and righteous global society. A Vincentian education calls leaders to holistic care of those they lead coupled with radical principles …
