U.S. Undergraduate Test-Optional Policies For International Applicants During The Covid Pandemic: An Exploration Of Admissions Webpages, Sugene Cho-Baker, Guangming Ling, José Sotelo, Olasumbo Oluwalana

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

Although the adoption of test-optional policies (TOPs) has risen, there is little research documenting the types of TOPs (e.g., test-blind, test-optional) utilized across higher educational institutions, particularly for international applicants, who have been traditionally required to submit additional application components (e.g., proof of English language proficiency [ELP]). Using the content of undergraduate admissions webpages from 518 U.S. 4-year universities, the current study examined how standardized test policies are implemented in admissions for international applicants. We found that only 2.5% of the institutions explicitly required ACT/SAT scores, whereas 43.1% stated ACT/SAT scores as optional requirements for admissions. Some institutions provided unclear …

Pink Slips (For Some): Campus Employment, Social Class, And Covid-19, Anthony Abraham Jack, Becca Spindel Bassett

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although undergraduates from all class backgrounds work while attending college, little is known about how students approach finding work and the benefits they reap from different on-campus roles. Drawing on interviews with 110 undergraduates at Harvard University, we show that in the absence of clear institutional expectations surrounding on-campus work opportunities, students draw on class-based strategies to determine which jobs are “right for them.” Upper-income students pursued “life of the mind” jobs that permitted them access to institutional resources and networks. Alternatively, lower-income students pursued more transactional “work for pay” positions that yielded fewer institutional benefits and connections. The consequences …

In this article the author presents guidelines for practicing solidarity in university LGBTQIA+ centers based on lessons learned from intersex and trans people's stories of their lived experiences. Specifically, ze argues that intersex and trans stories challenge our assumptions regarding solidarity to reconsider the stories we tell ourselves and how we approach differences and commonalities. Based on these lessons, I present five guidelines for practicing solidarity in University LGTQIA+ centers. More specifically, I articulate these guidelines drawing on intersex and trans writers such as Emi Koyama, Emily Quinn, Sean Saifa Wall as well as the work of the Intersex Justice …

Jesuit Pedagogy's 'Missing Link', Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano May 2024

Jesuit Pedagogy's 'Missing Link', Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Jesuit pedagogy has undergone a major renewal in the last fifty years. In this process, various inspirational formulations of its educational vision have been chosen. Despite maintaining a common language and spirituality, we have identified the risk that it is only lived out by a minority of people in Jesuit educational institutions. This paper proposes a re-reading of the Ratio Studiorum (RS) that offers a more precise and complete understanding of Jesuit pedagogy. This leads us to conclude that, in addition to other well-known features, it must involve the institutional governance model, a focus on an educative community that learns …
