Mullins is set to graduate later this month with a master’s degree in brand and media strategy, her second degree from ETSU. And during her time in Johnson City, she has gained experience that …

Encountering American Higher Education: First-Year Academic Transition Of International Undergraduate Students In The United States, Masha Krsmanovic
Encountering American Higher Education: First-Year Academic Transition Of International Undergraduate Students In The United States, Masha Krsmanovic
Journal of Global Education and Research
This study explored how international undergraduate students perceive their academic transition into American higher education. Schlossberg’s (1984) 4S Transition Theory served as the framework for exploring what academic challenges, if any, international students experience during their first year of undergraduate studies in a new cultural and educational setting. The findings revealed that students’ academic transition into the U.S. higher education was characterized by difficulties in understanding the academic system of their new environment; overcoming educational, instructional and pedagogical differences; building social relationships with domestic students; and receiving the support necessary from the appropriate institutional services.

Determinants Of E-Learning Acceptance Amongst Iranian Postgraduate Students, Fatima Baji, Fereydoun Azadeh, Zivar Sabaghinejad, Amir Zalpour
Journal of Global Education and Research
E-learning can address some of the unmet needs of learners and educational communities; however, not all learners and educators accept e-learning as a delivery modality. This research endeavored to study the factors which affect e-learning acceptance among Iranian post-graduate students using the Davis Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and to identify the changes which would facilitate their improved acceptance and subsequent wider use of e-learning. This descriptive-correlation study was conducted by surveying 320 Iranian postgraduate students using a self-reporting questionnaire. Structural equation modeling was used for data analysis through LISREL software. Results revealed sufficient validity and reliability of the TAM among …

ETSU News
JOHNSON CITY – Students, employees and visitors to the East Tennessee State University campus who strolled University Commons recently enjoyed a colorful – and meaningful – sight: a special tree wrapped in a lovingly crafted “sweater.”
“Sweaters for Cameron” is the brainchild of Abigail “Abby” Simpson, a sophomore rehabilitative health sciences major from Church Hill who is a student in ETSU’s Roan Scholars Leadership Program. Through the Roan Impact Focus Project, students read a book over the summer that centered on healthy habits and were encouraged to do meaningful projects using the healthy habits they picked up as a …
Understanding Sense Of Belonging Of Students Of Color Attending A Liberal Arts College, Jessica Wenger
Understanding Sense Of Belonging Of Students Of Color Attending A Liberal Arts College, Jessica Wenger
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
College access programs have been created to provide students of color opportunities to attend college. The Posse Foundation selects promising urban high school students to attend highly selective colleges and universities across the country. College success is dependent on a variety of factors, two of which are successful social and academic integration into the campus community (Tinto, 1993). Related to integration, sense of belonging is the feeling that an individual belongs in their environment (McMillan & Chavis, 1986).

In The Driver’S Seat: A Practice-Based Inquiry Into The Compositional Role Of Electric Guitar Distortion In Heavy Metal Music, Timothy Hacquoil
Postgraduate
This exegesis presents the findings of a practice-based research inquiry into the compositional role of electric guitar distortion in heavy metal music. Practice-based research places the practitioner-observer in a position to engage with knowledge and scope the ontological framework within my methods of practice. In response to the research question, I have produced ten original heavy metal compositions which provide evidence of a connection between distortion method and composition influence such as genre classification and instrument playability. The narrow scope of investigation facilitates observation of this composition-distortion relationship which is supported by audio visualisation tools and contributes to research in …

The Lived Experiences Of Students Who Are Single Parents And Attending Community College: A Phenomenological Study, Debbie Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study used phenomenological research methods to explore the lived experiences of single parents attending community college. The phenomenological research design was used to better understand participant experiences by examining the participant’s view of their situation. Thirteen single-parent students in community colleges in the United States were selected using purposeful sampling techniques. The participants included ten female participants and three male participants. Of these participants, nine students attended full-time, and four attended part-time. Each student participated in one-on-one interviews using Zoom technology.
The participants provided their perceptions of their experiences as single parents attending community college. These participants described …

Community College Faculty’S Perceptions Of Culturally Responsive Teaching, Sarah Tolbert-Hurysz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study sought to understand community college faculty’s perceptions of and experiences with culturally responsive teaching. Participants were full- and part-time faculty currently employed at community colleges in the Southeastern United States and purposefully selected to provide information-rich data. Data collected from the semi-structured, in-depth interviews with the participants were coded and thematically analyzed. Emerging themes included faculty’s inclusion of varied categories of cultural diversity when describing students; limited knowledge related to culturally responsive teaching; perception that culturally responsive teaching is centered on connecting and building relationships with students; belief in the value of providing students exposure to different …
The Effectiveness Of Using Python Programming Approach In Teaching Financial Analytics, Clarence Goh, Yuanto Kusnadi, Gary Pan
The Effectiveness Of Using Python Programming Approach In Teaching Financial Analytics, Clarence Goh, Yuanto Kusnadi, Gary Pan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This study presents a learning method and challenges regarding implementing a Python programming approach in teaching financial analytics to graduate accounting students. The advent of Big Data, as well as related applications and technologies, has significantly changed the process and practice of accounting. This has led to essential changes in the construction and teaching content of accounting education. While there have been several studies examining how data analytics is embedded in the accounting curriculum, the majority of the teaching cases in accounting focus on analysis and communication with Excel as the principal tool, with very few covering the necessary steps …

Foreign Donations In The Higher Education Sector Of The United States And The United Kingdom:Pathways For Reputation Laundering, Alexander Cooley, Tena Prelec, John Heathershaw
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
We explore how the influx of foreign funding into the higher education sectors of the United States and United Kingdom has raised the challenge of “reputation laundering”—when foreign donors and individuals use donations to prestigious universities to boost their international public image and offset negative images or reported controversies back in their home country. We outline four pathways for reputation laundering—donations for academic programs/schools, naming rights, honorary degrees and board seats; and the offer of favorable admissions decisions—and examine the variety of policies, practices and safeguards that have been adopted by U.K. and U.S. universities in response. We present evidence, …

2022-December-01-Etsu Predicts Above-Normal Temperatures This Winter, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University
ETSU News
JOHNSON CITY – Like it or not, the official start to winter is only a few days away.
And for the third straight season, winter will be characterized by the La Niña pattern. That likely means higher-than-normal temperatures for much of the Appalachian Highlands and above average precipitation, according to East Tennessee State University.
“Seasonal forecasts can be pretty tricky and the federal government through the NOAA along with the Farmer’s Almanac and Punxsutawney Phil, don’t always get it right,” said Dr. Andrew Joyner and Wil Tollefson, both members of the Department of Geosciences.

Launching An Online Boutique And Analyzing Digital Marketing Strategies Used, Kayla Weyers
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Digital marketing is becoming more relevant and widely used in the marketing industry. In order to use the marketing skills that I have learned through my marketing major in a real-world scenario, I launched an online women’s clothing store called Ash + Grae. This paper examines the start-up process and legal obstacles of opening a small business. It also analyzes the different marketing techniques by comparing digital marketing strategies such as social media, influencer, email, and SEO marketing.
